Why the clamour for Ong Ka Ting's return?

2010/03/14

KUALA LUMPUR, Sun -- The clamour for former MCA President Tan Sri Ong Ka Ting to contest the party's top post in the March 28 elections is being widely debated among party members.
Many ponder about the motive behind the calls for Ka Ting's potential political comeback, which had been made by his hardcore supporters and some leaders known to be previously associated with him.

Some say it is due to their genuine concern that the elections may get out of hand and the polls may not solve the party's current problems. Hence, the best option is to bring back a leader who had previously been successful in unifying the party to a certain extent.

But some party members believe that the calls are due to some power play behind the scenes, including talk that came from outside the party as well as the need for a strong candidate to face Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat and Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek.

They believe that the actual move by Ka Ting's supporters, who are now mostly behind former vice-president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, is to put up a strong candidate.

Sources close to the Liow group contend that Liow could not be sacrificed for the position of number one while former MCA secretary-general Ong Ka Chuan is perceived as a "weaker candidate" to run for number one as he was once defeated in the contest for the number two position.

Both Liow and Ka Chuan will be seen as the weaker candidates in facing Tee Keat, who has already announced that he would defend his presidency, as well as Soi Lek, should the latter decide to go for president.

The Liow and Ka Chuan groups are said to lack strong firepower as far as candidates are concerned to take on the number one position. Therefore, the best option available is to get Ka Ting, the younger brother of Ka Chuan, to come out of retirement and lead the faction.

The other factor is that some of Liow's supporters, namely former Central Committee (CC) member Datuk Wee Jeck Seng, Dr Hou Kok Chung, Wong Nai Chee and Wanita chief Datuk Paduka Chew Mei Fun, are known to be Ka Ting's hardcore supporters, and may not be comfortable working with Soi Lek or Tee Keat now.

The same goes for some supporters of former deputy president Tan Sri Chan Kong Choy who now stands strongly behind Liow, and is also said to be not comfortable working with Soi Lek over the latter's controversial sex DVD and issues related to the Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ).

Soi Lek's supporters suspect that the sex DVD issue was a move to kill their leader's political career although this had been denied by other factions, while Kong Choy's supporters are said to be not happy with the way Tee Keat is pursuing the PKFZ investigations.

"Therefore, they have no other choice except to urge Ka Ting to make a comeback and lead them in battle as they have no intention of teaming up with Soi Lek or Tee Keat," said a former CC member who declined to be named.

Whether the real need is to "salvage the party" or have a strong candidate is really something open to interpretation.

For political analysts, should Ka Ting decide to join the fray, it would bring a new dimension to the MCA polls.

However, supporters of both Soi Lek and Tee Keat still do not believe that Ka Ting would make a comeback as they claim that he would not risk his hitherto unblemished political image.

"If he loses, what will happen? More embarrassment for him. You also have to keep in mind that if he decides to make a comeback, the political alignment will totally change again," said a Tee Keat supporter. - Bernama

    Ong Tee Keat - UMNO does not want him , cannot control , shoots like Billy The Kid or Maverick . All the Chinese wants him , to them he is Sun Yat Sun . 5. I got this from a friend - an UMNO division chief. In On Ka Ting's day, MCA did nothing for the Chinese. This UMNO fella and another friend, a Chinese businessman, had to raised fund from other govt sources for Chinese community program. The funds allocated to MCA for Chinese community programs were not forthcoming. That is MCA under Ong Ka Ting for you.

    1. Please don't sia shui (disgrace) Ka Ting like thatlah....

    2. Ka Ting was a good strategist. When he was under LLS's armpit, he intelligently "killed" his rivals one after another: Lee Kim Sai; Ah Lek; Jui Meng; Kong Choy; and lastly Soi Lek.[Tee Keat was "killed" by Ka Ting much earlier!] That's why he became the President.

    3.But men's calculations cannot match the destiny made by the Heaven. So after the 308 blunder, he called it quit....

    4. To be fair to Ka Ting, during the NTV7 interview that night, he made it very clear that he wouldn't return to lead the party. But he added that should his views are required, he was ever ready (义不容辞)to provide so --"not necessarily by returning to lead the party".

    5. Unfortunately the balls carrier Sin Chew & other Chinese language newspapers omitted that last phrase of Ka Ting's statement!

    6. I believed that Ka Ting had "let go" (放下) the politics and he wouldn't pick it up again to 'spoil' his present peaceful/blissful family life.

    7. These are the issues to be considered by Ka Ting should he change his mind:

    (a)Ka Ting not only should not return to the political forefront in contesting the Presidency but must support Tee Keat;
    (b)After the dismay performance of MCA in the 2008 GE, Ka Ting took responsible, first by not nominating himself to the cabinet and gave way in the party election;
    (c)Ka Ting is not able to unite the party as the Save MCA Committee headed by Theng Bok was in fact financed by CSL;
    (d)If Ka Ting were to return to the political forefront, those who opposed to him before will continue their crusade against him, thus, open up a new chapter of internal fighting and would affect BN in the next GE.
    (e)If Ka Ting have the political wisdom, he should stay out, after all his brother Ka Chuan had made it clear that he would be contesting, the construction “Ong Dynasty” much loathed by party members would lead to more internal fighting.

  7. Utusan & MalaysianInsider also felt that TS Ong Ka Ting should not return to "worsen" the crisis:

    1.Utusan/Mingguan Msia: "...Terbaru, ada beberapa bahagian mencadangkan bekas Presiden MCA, Ong Ka Ting bertanding jawatan Presiden MCA pada pemilihan baru hujung bulan ini. Ia cadangan menarik tetapi Awang (Selamat) tidak fikir ia akan membantu....

    2. Malaysiainsider.com:

    A Ka Ting comeback will do MCA no good

    MARCH 14 — It is perhaps a testament to how far MCA has fallen that its former president Tan Sri Ong Ka Ting is mulling a comeback in a bid to once again helm Barisan Nasional’s (BN) second biggest party.

    It was after all under his leadership that the genesis of the party’s problems today began.

    Ka Ting had been a weak party president after inheriting the mantle from Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik in the aftermath of an earlier tussle for power between the latter and Tan Sri Lim Ah Lek.

    As president, Ka Ting was unable to consolidate fully his hold on the party and factionalism continued to grow....

  9. The establishment of PKFZ cannot be one man's decision. It is the Government's objective to make it successful. When this problematic issue surfaced why are all ex-MCA Ministers and Deputy Ministers keeping quiet and let OTK fight alone. Do we still trust such Ex-Ministers. Puzzled member.

  10. With regard to PKFZ, these Ex-Ministers all had dip there fingers into the honey pot. Would Chan Koon Choy be so bold without the backing of these people.

  13. Ong Ka Ting has failed the party and community. He has vowed not to return to active politics, he should just keep his words. A failed leader should not return to the fold, because it will make the scenario more messy.

    If Ka Ting insists on going for Presidency, then he should just do it like any ordinary contestant. He sholud not declare that he is returning as a saviour of sort. Do not fool the CD into believing that Ka Ting is the saviour. This is amounting to cheating the CDs.

    Ong Ka Ting is just a power seeker, a person who cannot resist the lust for power merely after 2 years into retirements. This is the problems with young retirees with so much good years behind them. They simply cannot resist the temptation and lust for power.

    Never mind if Ong Ka Ting cannot resist the lust for power, BUT HE SHOULD NOT ACT LIKE A SAVIOUR. HE IS NOT THE SAVIOUR, HE IS A ORDINARY POWER SEEKER. that all i want to say.

  19. An open letter to OKT - Your brother OKC is the root of decay of MCA . OKC produced many PHANTOM BRANCHES/DELEGATES/CDs for voting in many MCA party election. OKC must be buried long2 time already but because of you. He stands up again as MP and ex-General Secretary. OKT you do enjoy every thing as President of MCA and from a POOR FAMILY nurtured by your hard working mother. Dont listen to LAL ( Father of Brutus Gang ). Let 328 decide the destiny of MCA and not because of you. The Fresh Party Election is the tedious request by LTL , WKS/CMF not inclusive because they are go for that RE-Election. So LAL & LTL tactis, you still trust them ? An ex-MCA leader met you before.
