MCA Youth, Wanita stick by ‘no AGM’ call

KUALA LUMPUR, March 5 — Both MCA Wanita and Youth wing chiefs announced today that they will stick by their decisions not to hold their annual general assemblies tomorrow, despite instructions to do so.

Youth chief Datuk Wee Ka Siong and Wanita head Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun also decided not to hold fresh polls for the two wings although they were advised to do so by the party’s central committee (CC).

Earlier this evening, the remaining members of the party’s central committee members decided that the decision by the two wings to scrap their AGMs would contravene the party’s constitution.

But Wee argued that his wing had decided to stick by its decision because it has the “autonomy” to decide.

“We hope all quarters will respect the autonomy of the wing and anything that happens tomorrow will not represent the youth wing,” he said at a press conference held after the remaining members of the CC held theirs.

Wee’s decision not to go ahead with the wing’s AGM will not halt the assembly as it only requires the attendance of 200 members.

Meanwhile, Chew also insisted that Wanita MCA could postpone the AGM under Article 11.4 of the wing’s by-laws.

She, too, will not be attending tomorrow’s AGM but, as like the Youth wing’s, the assembly can proceed if 200 Wanita delegates attend.

Both Wee and Chew are allies of Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai who has been at the centre of MCA’s prolonged leadership crisis.
