Dalai Lama risks Chinese ire to back Uighurs

DHARAMSALA, March 10 — Exiled Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama voiced his support today for an ethnic minority in China’s troubled Xinjiang province, risking worsening further his fraught relations with Beijing.

In an address marking 51 years since he fled Tibet after a failed uprising against Chinese rule, the Dalai Lama referred to Xinjiang as “East Turkestan”, the name given to it by pro-independence exiles. The region is populated by an ethnic minority Uighurs, a Turkic-speaking largely Muslim people.

“Let us also remember the people of East Turkestan who have experienced great difficulties and increased oppression,” he told about 3,000 Tibetans in Dharamsala, the northern Indian hill town where he has lived for five decades.

“I would like to express my solidarity and stand firmly with them”.

Chinese authorities in Xinjiang have waged a heavy-handed campaign against what China calls violent separatist activity by Uighurs. Ethnic violence there last year between Uighurs and majority Han Chinese led to at least 200 deaths.

The Dalai Lama’s comments will almost certainly rile Beijing, which reviles the Nobel Peace Prize winner as a separatist and says he foments violence. The Dalai Lama denies both charges, saying he merely seeks genuine autonomy for the remote region.

In Dharamsala, thousands of exiled Tibetans, including maroon-robed monks, nuns and many Westerners, marked the day with a march carrying blue-yellow-red Tibetan flags and banners with anti-China messages.

In neighbouring Nepal, police detained about a dozen Tibetan protestors when they tried to storm a Chinese consulate office in the capital Kathmandu. The protestors, who shouted “Free Tibet”, were dragged away by riot police to waiting vans.

In a separate incident, dozens of Tibetan refugees protested against China after prayer meetings inside a Buddhist monastery.

Reaching out to Tibetans working for the Chinese government, the Dalai Lama said: “I invite Tibetan officials serving in various Tibetan autonomous areas to visit Tibetan communities living in the free world, either officially or in a private capacity, to observe the situation for themselves.”

China bans Tibetans who work for the government from visiting exile communities, but many ordinary Tibetans make the hazardous and illegal crossing to study Buddhism in Dharamsala.

The Dalai Lama also vowed he and members of his self-proclaimed government-in-exile would not take any political positions if and when the Tibet issue was resolved.

On Sunday, Tibet’s new Chinese-appointed governor said only socialism could “save” the region and guarantee its development, and blamed the Dalai Lama for Tibet’s problems.

Protests led by Buddhist monks against Chinese rule in March 2008 gave way to torrid violence, with rioters torching shops and turning on residents, including Han Chinese and Hui Muslims. Tibetans see Hans as intruders threatening their culture.

At least 19 people died in the 2008 unrest, which sparked waves of protest across Tibetan areas ahead of the Beijing Olympics. Pro-Tibet groups abroad say more than 200 Tibetans have died in a subsequent crackdown across the region. Beijing has denied that and said it used minimal force.

The Dalai Lama said Beijing had put monks and nuns “in prison-like conditions”, making “monasteries function more like museums ... to deliberately annihilate Buddhism”.

But he offered to keep talking to the Chinese, despite what he sees as “little hope” of results.

  2. The issue is not OTK or CSL or WSK or any one individual.

The real issue we need to discuss is this - MCA.

No matter who wins the presidential seat this coming 28th, MCA's future is still very much uncertain.

    Why?

There is no time left for MCA.

    * MCA has lost so much credibility that MCA can no longer stand alone anymore.

MCA is very much like a severely obese guy, so obese that he can't stand on his own two leg anymore.

Nowadays, MCA has to rely on Barisan Nasional in order to have the MCA candidates elected.

Don't believe me? Look at the election records for the past 5 elections.

Count how many of MCA's candidates run in places where the Chinese are the majority.

Then see for yourself how many of the MCA's candidates run places where the majority voters are pro-UMNO Malays.

Back to the point --- MCA has no time left, and can not function as a stand-alone political entity.

So what lies in the future for MCA?

Remember, this is not about OTK or CSL or whoever.

    This is about MCA.

My message may be deleted by j4otk very soon, since j4otk isn't the person who can really face that ugly truth.

But no matter what, I do need to write this out, for whoever read this, to start doing some thinking.

    WHAT LIES AHEAD FOR MCA?

Well frankly you have your opinion , we will study your points , but there are many political analyst who thinks they are hell of a great and their opinion must be taken as a bible for the MCA to survive .

Advertly I do not concur with you , nor do I agree with you on the points that you wrote .

You cannot change a mindset which has been embedded over the years overnight , but you MUST be seen to be doing it . Like they say , Rome was never built in a day .

    * MCA has lost so much credibility that MCA can no longer stand alone anymore.Look at the election records for the past 5 elections.? ? - This is but a myth .

In 2004 during GE11 , BN won so great and sent the opposition rats scurrying into their rat holes with DAP survived by a lone ranger rat . MCA won almost in every seat they contested . What election record for the past 5 election are you spinning ??

We even sent the lion of Jelutong back to Afica and the RCI Alien back to Ipoh . This was cause by the Rakyat willing to give the BN a chance to perform with the changeover of premiership even with 50 yrs of obesity that they cant stand on their own two feet . haha !

You have kept spinning the word
There is no time left for MCA.
What's your main purpose here in this blog ?
To create problems for MCA and ARMNO ?
To see the demise of MCA and proudly telling everyone I told you so ?

We will solve out problems one at a time and we don't need you here to tell us what to do !

I suggest you refrain from your teacher to student comments here in this blog .

  4. Thank you for your reply, J.

    I did say 5 elections, J.

    5, not 1.

You got the data, J, you know what I mean.

You can deny till the cows come home, but if you can be truthful to yourself --- try it, you may surprise yourself ! --- you would see that vast majority of MCA candidates run in MALAY AREAS, specifically the PRO-UMNO MALAY AREAS.

On the other hand, how many MCA candidates run in Chinese areas?

If you can --- for even a fraction of a second --- be truthful to yourself, you would know that I am right, and you are lying to yourself.

Have a happy life, J. You need it. :)

Take a foot at a time . We will decide when we cross the bridge . However the fight now is not with ARMNO though they are the contributing partly the factor to our our defeat in the last 308 GE.

But that was not the only factor , there were many factors . The loss or defeat were partly contributed to our voting out our own candidates put up by the Ong Bros Sdn Bhd .

I wouldn't want to dwell into that for the moment . We shall have a lot to time to talk about come the run up to the next GE which is not far from now .

If Ong wins , the next GE result will be very favourable . However if CSL wins the results will be as predicted by you .

The battle today is of crucial importance to us .

I am predicting a favourable result . You can interpret what I mean by favourable .

On your question of how many MCA candidates run in Chinese area ? As far as Penang is concerned most of the areas contested by MCA has Chinese majority . Go check this out yourself .
You are kidding everyone here by saying vast majority of MCA candidates run in MALAY AREAs , specifically PRO UMNO MALAY AREAS .

Far fetch your theory ! Everyone knows most constituencies MCA candidates contest are in the URBAN AREAS and TOWNS populated in majority by CHINESE not MALAY .

Please don't bullshit ! Just tell me one constituency in Penang where a MCA candidate contested has a MALAY majority ?

You must be talking about GERAKAN .

Please name one otherwise retract your satement .

  6. Here have a formula to solve MCA present crisis. The Dalai Lama's objective telling us that WE CANNOT SPLIT APART.
But the formula is SPLIT APART. This separation formula will help MCA grow stronger n stronger again. PM say MCA should solve the crisis fast and this formula really can solve very fast. However the formula will be coming on 322. So MCA CDs if interest to know this formula , 322 will come out.Let put it 322 FORMULA. Fresh Election is 328 , if this 322 Formula can be adapted, then MCA will concentrate his force to face coming GE.Pyramid

  7. See J, you are trying very desperately to kid yourself.

So desperate that you are putting words in my mouth.

When was the last time I talked about MCA's candidates in Penang, huh?

I was talking MCA's candidates in general, not only in Penang, but then, knowing you as I have known you (guess what, I know you for years already), you just can't find the guts to face the reality.

No, J, I am not picking fight with you. I am just stating the fact, as it is.

You got the data, you know where the MCA candidates were fielded, and you know who the penduduk in the zones.

No matter how you wanna try, the facts are still there.

You just can't argue yourself out of this mess.

Not only you, nobody can argue this.

MCA is in the rut, not only now, but it had happened for MANY YEARS already.

But then, J, you are acting as if you are the last one to know that. :)

Have a happy life, J, and I mean it. :)

  8. give us a break, lets get back to this topic..
The running dog of china, dalai lama, and the split & rule dog of the US.
what a shame to the buddhist community to have such a dog to be use as tools by the US, to break down china.personally,i love buddhism, its one of the most democratic religion.but advantage has been taken over by dalai, and misuse for his personally gain.
What US really concern is only XIN JIAN, an oil rich province and ofcourse to weaken the growing great giant,CHINA.

  9. Haven't you detected the ironic similarity yet?

Dalai Lama is to Buddhism just like MCA is to Chinese.

Both are liars. Damn damn liars !!

  10. Now is three corner fight since every heads declare has own team. OTK/CSL and lastly LTL form a team after WKS recent announcement he still stick to LTL. Latest new team will form is OKT but still need further confirmation which is openly opposed by Tong Muk , the chair person against the 3 Man unit during OKT as president. Pyramid

  11. Since LAL said to support OKT to contest back the president post without knowing the effect of 2008/308 Tsunami during the helm of OKT. LAL did put CKC before to hold the deputy as OKT No.1 post for party nomination without contesting. The same tactic from LAL now aiming to retain PAHANG STATE AS DEPUTY PRESIDENT WHICH AGAINST THE SPIRIT OF DEMOCRACY. If the SIONG PAN of LAL is correct , LTL should have no problem to win the No.2 post whom may lead by OKT. In other words, if LTL team up with OTK who just announced to retain his president post, the most possible challenger CSL will also favour LTL.

  12. MCA with smaller quantity of CDs in Pahang,Negeri Sembilan, Malacca, Kedah can be taken well care by party but not must be the 2nd Post. LAL too selfish to LOOK BIG POST for the smaller state will making party MANY INTERNAL FIGHTING. Big post should be hold by bigger state to show INFLUENCE POWER. Party run effectively should depend much on Strength instead of EQ unless he is very brilliant.
