Vatican under fire for linking gays to paedophilia

VATICAN CITY, April 14 — Gay groups and politicians condemned Pope Benedict’s number two today for calling homosexuality a “pathology” and linking it directly to sexual abuse of children.

The comments made by Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone during a visit to Chile, and the controversy they caused, were splashed on mainstream Italian newspapers today.

The French foreign ministry and in some Catholic blogs that support the pope also condemned the cardinal’s remarks.

As the scandal over sexual abuse of children by priests has spread, some in the Catholic Church have called for a review of the Church’s rule that prohibits priests from marrying, saying marriage would allow priests to enjoy a healthy sex life.

Bertone, the Vatican secretary of state, who is sometimes called the “deputy pope,” told a news conference in Santiago on Monday:

“Many psychologists and psychiatrists have shown that there is no link between celibacy and paedophilia, but many others have shown, I have recently been told, that there is a relationship between homosexuality and paedophilia.”

“This pathology is one that touches all categories of people, and priests to a lesser degree in percentage terms,” he said. “The behaviour of the priests in this case, the negative behaviour, is very serious, is scandalous.”

Gay rights activists reacted with derision and outrage.

“This is a scientific absurdity. The World Health Organisation calls homosexuality a variation of human behaviour. It is paedopholia that is a pathology, a crime, not homosexuality,” said Franco Grillini, a former parliamentarian who was at the vanguard of Italy’s gay rights movement.

“Because they have their own problems with the abuse crisis and don’t know how to handle it, they are trying to pass their ‘cross’ from their shoulders on to ours,” Grillini told Reuters.

The French foreign ministry called it an “unacceptable linkage that we condemn”.

Some pro-Vatican Catholic blogs said more controversy was the last thing the Vatican needed.

“Paedophilia and homosexuality: Bertone trips up — again — on gays,” read a post in the Italian-language “Blog of the Friends of Pope Ratzinger.”

It said the pope might now have to “clean up the mess made by his right-hand man”.

A front-page editorial in Rome’s left-leaning La Repubblica newspaper titled “The Confusion in the Church” said Bertone’s comments would end up causing the Church more “harm to itself, not homosexuals”.

Bertone was also criticised by Alessandra Mussolini, a right-wing parliamentarian whose grandfather, wartime Fascist dictator Benito Mussolini, sent gays into internal exile.

“You can’t link sexual orientation to paedophilia ... this link risks becoming dangerously misleading for the protection of children,” Mussolini said.

  1. I believe that in the 21st century, the Catholic Church will be gone. The Catholic had 1 thousand years of prosecution. It had 1 thousand years of power. In its third millenium it will be destroyed from within.

  2. As the oldest church in the world and having the most number of converts, the Catholic Church has played its religious role without much controversies. Problems crop up from time to time because of human failures or misguidance. If you say it will be destroyed, I beg to disagree. On the contrary it is growing from strength to strength spanning Europe to America.

  3. If you read nostradamus phophecy , it is predicted that this is the final lap of the catholic church . Pope Benedict is the last pope , after that no more .

  4. The Catholic Church as we see today was set up as a political institution. It was setup to control the kings of Europe as the Holy Roman Empire. With the lost if its empire, it reverted back to be a religious institution. It is anomaly in the 21st century.

  7. Pope what pope ? Pope is no hope, bcos the religon imposes some restriction on church and missionary woekers, nobody is willing to become one.

It is wrong from the start. There will be no missionary workers left in no time. Later on you cannot find anybody to take over the pope.

  10. I like what Stephen Hawking's view on God and religion...much closer to what I believe in -
"The question: Was the way the universe began chosen by God for reasons
we can’t understand, or was it determined by a law of science? I
    believe the second,"

"If you like, you can call the laws of science God, but it
wouldn’t be a personal God that you could meet, and ask
questions, though if there were such a God, I would like to ask how
ever did He think of anything as complicated as M-theory in 11
    dimensions,"

  11. Peter Tan finally admits the Pornsident to be his master who has a partiality to fellatio. If PT subscribe to this site's philosophy we should be magnanimous enough to welcome his views. But of course, this is only my view which do not represent the blog's owner.

Don't you agree that 1 Malaysia also covers the protection of children as we have seen a sharp rise of child abuse resulting in death lately in Malaysia ?

SUBANG JAYA – Little Jasmine Lee became the latest child abuse victim who died today with over 30 bruises on her body and head.

The husband and wife were detained today. — DailyChillipix
Her mother and her stepfather were arrested soon after the child was taken to Poliklinik Komuniti Seri Kembangan by the man who found her unconscious at their home in Bukit Serdang this morning.

The 27-year-old stepfather is suspected to have abused the three-old-girl over a month.

    Horrific injuries

A doctor who examined Jasmine indicated that the injury marks found on her resembled those suffered by someone who had been repeatedly assaulted over a period of time.

  17. KUALA LUMPUR: Chinese guilds and associations, business leaders and non-governmental organisations should provide input so that the Government Transformation Programme (GTP) would better reflect the aspirations of the nation, said MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek.
    ................................................

MCA under the leadership of a tainted president can't even take a small step to Reform and Transform is now telling others to do so...is he telling us now that the GTP is about to follow his footstep that a tainted person can lead MCA???......

  18. Sexual abuse of children does not happen only inside the Catholic church. In Buddhist temples also it happened, and it happened to the son of my friend.

They have "training camp" or "summer camp" of sort, where parents sent their sons to temple to stay for couple of weeks (with bald head, of course) to learn the "karma" or something.

What happened to my friend's son is that an old monk asked him to go to his (old monk's) room and he went. Inside the old monk asked that boy to "polish his rod".

That kid is smart. He made and excuse and then bolted out of the room and out of the temple and immediately called his parents from a pay phone (no hand phone back then).

Although my friend didn't lodge any police report, he hasn't gone to any buddhist temple to sembayang ever since.

  19. J4OTK is simply jealous of the Catholics.

How convenient of J4OTK to portray the Catholics as being bad while in his own 1Malaysia a 3-year-old Chinese girl was tortured to death, by her own mother and her mother's boyfriend, both of whom are Buddhists.

  20. Maybe you know them very well , but I don't know them . I also do not know they are Buddhists , only you , all I know is that they are Chinese , and most probably Taoists .

I hope you can differentiate between Taoists and Buddhists .

And they are always bad Buddhists and good Buddhists !

Again I do not know where and what you are getting at by saying they are Buddhists .

Bad thoughts from you invites bad karma
