Dr Chua faces opposition during first CC meet

UPDATE 1

By Clara Chooi

KUALA LUMPUR, April 7 — Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek had his first taste of bitterness this afternoon when he was faced with voices of dissent against his leadership, during his maiden central committee meeting held at Corus Hotel here.

The opposition, which came unsurprisingly from his deputy Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, could be a harbinger of more to come.

The Malaysian Insider understands that Liow had raised objection during the appointment of Dr Chua’s proposed list of state chairmen.

According to a party source, the Health Minister had declined the job of Pahang state chairman, a post he had apparently been lobbying for during the tenure of former party president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat.

“Liow no longer wanted to hold on to the Penang state chairmanship. He felt it was too heavy of a burden to take on, especially with Penang being led by Pakatan Rakyat. He had to fork out plenty of cash and time. That was why he proposed to take on the Pahang post instead.

“Today, he got what he wanted but still he was unhappy and rejected it. You know that when you are holding such high post in the party and you do not take on a state chairman post, it obviously shows you are out to wage a war,” said the source today.

Liow’s objections could also mean that the MCA leadership, although said to be all-inclusive with a mixed team of supporters from all camps, might still be faced with hiccups every now and again.

Today’s meeting, which lasted about three hours, saw the appointments of the party’s top administrative posts, namely that of secretary-general, treasurer-general and national organising secretary, their deputies, as well as eight more CC members.

Dr Chua also appointed members of his presidential council team and the party’s list of state liaison chairmen.

His son Chua Tee Yong also got appointed into the presidential council , what a joke ! this is called tainted appointment . Unite the Party ? My foot !

Liow, the party’s No 2 had always been vocal in his disapproval of Dr Chua, and had been one of the leaders to back former president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat during a row over Dr Chua’s sacking.

Dr Chua was sacked in August last year due to his involvement in a sex scandal that stained his political career in 2007.

In fact, prior to his election as deputy president, Liow had conveyed the message that he could not work with Dr Chua.

During the party poll on March 28, Liow had thrown his support behind Dr Chua’s biggest contender, former party president Tan Sri Ong Ka Ting.

The result of the polls had, however forced the two together in an odd marriage, leaving Liow with no choice but to accept his fate of being the deputy to a leader he had strongly opposed.

According to a party source however, Liow had no plans to place blind faith in Dr Chua’s leadership.

“He has to draw a line to protest, to show his supporters he has not surrendered.

“He has to show some form of opposition. He said that he did not want the Pahang job because the previous chairman was already doing a very good job.

“Pahang is a relatively small state, with only about over 160 delegates. It is not like Johor, Perak or Selangor.

He refused it but was made to accept it later,” said the source.

The source however predicted that Liow was just a proxy for other former party leaders like Tan Sri Chan Kong Choy and Ka Ting himself.

“Look at him just now, sauntering out of the meeting in a huff, followed by his crew of people like (Youth chief Datuk) Wee (Ka Siong). You just know what is happening,” said the source.

Wee, according to the source, was also upset at not having been given a state chairman post. He was formerly the Malacca state liaison chairman.

Liow’s voice of dissent was apparently joined with that of the party’s former secretary-general Datuk Seri Ong Ka Chuan, who is also the older brother of Ka Ting.

“Ka Chuan also showed protest. He turned down the post of religious bureau chairman,” said the source.

Aside from Liow and Ka Chuan, another significant protest against Dr Chua’s leadership was shown in the missing presence of Wanita MCA chief Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun.

Chew, who was also not given a state chairman post despite having been the former Perlis MCA chairman, is in fact expected to resign from her party posts after her wing’s central committee meeting tomorrow.

She had pledged she would do so even before last year’s Oct 10 extraordinary general meeting, declaring that she would never work with Dr Chua as president.

The source added that the not-so-subtle signs of opposition during today’s meet, although relatively mild, showed that Dr Chua’s tenure as president may be peppered by similar occasions of opposition over the year.

“It will be fireworks from here on end. Especially if Liow still decides to reject the Pahang offer. We will see if he still takes it on,” said the source.

After the meeting earlier, Dr Chua had announced Liow’s new post in a press conference but his words were greeted with a quick disclaimer from Liow that it was only a “temporary” post.

  1. Not that I like OTK after the 1010, but, as expected, CSL is going to be worse. It is so predictable judging from what I have been following for the past 10 years.

J4, are you sure Chua TY is in the Presidential council?? OMG, this is worse than Lim KS and Lim GE.

As I told my fren about Lim KS and Lim GE - building the dynasty (clarification, I support them OK). My Fren replied, "hey, Lim GE has ever been to jail, you know. Do you think a father like Lim KS would let his son to goto jail in oder to make him a Chief Minister."

He got a strong pint here.

But out CTY become the "Dai Chi" just because his father can not keep his dick in his pants. What a joke!!!!!

  3. CLS appointed his son a rookie as a member of presidential council? This is a bad move for him.
How can an inexperience member be in a policy making body of MCA?

MCA. See what you are getting into.

  4. BECAUSE THIS WEBSITE SUPPORTS OTK TO BECOME PRESIDENT, ANYBODY ELSE BE IT LTL, CSL OR OKT, ALL ARE NOT QUALIFIED TO LEAD. ONLY ONG TEE KEAT IS FIT TO LEAD 6,000,000 MALAYSIANS.

WHAT IS THIS ALL ABOUT ? CSL IS THE CD CHOICE, THE CD HAVE COLLECTIVELY MADE THEIR DECISION, BUT THIS WEBSITE STILL NOT SATISFIED. WHAT IS THE PROBLEM HERE.

IF THIS IS THE CASE, MIGHT AS WELL SUSPEND ALL THE 2377 CD AND LET THE OWNER OF THIS WEBSITE DECIDE WHO SHOULD BE THE PRESIDENT OF MCA.

IS THAT WHAT YOU WANT ? COME ON BE SENSIBLE, OTK IS GONE FOR GOOD. NO USE CRYING OVER THE SPILLED MILK. COME BACK TO PROPER POLITICS, RESPECT THE CHOICE OF THE CD. YOU SOUND LIKE ALL 901 CD ARE USELESS. WHAT IS THIS ALL ABOUT ? YOU ARE THE ONLY CLEVER GUY IN THIS WORLD LIKE OTK USED TO THINK.

IF NOT SATISFIED START YOUR PARTY, DO AWAY WITH CD SYSTEM, ELECT YOUR PARTY PRESIDENT BY USING WEBSITE.

  5. What is the problem of appointing Chua TY, he is the only available backbencher to carry a proper debate in the Dewan Rakyat. The other 4 members of mca backbencher are useless (Dr Fong, OKT & brother, own wanita from Johor who does not know how to speak proper BM), so Chua TY can carry debates in the Dewan, at least people know what MCA stands for.

Keep your blatant bias to your self. All the arguement in this website is only fit for coffee shop.

  6. 1. YB Chua Tee Yong IS in the Presidential Council.

    2. Aiyo, the boy can do work one. So what's wrong with his appointment?

    3. Loh Seng Kok was also appointed. Is Loh better than CTY? Go and analyse firstlah!

    4. Apparently the President is grooming his son. There is nothing wrong, and nothing to stop this. Don't you agree that a minister who gave project(s) to his buddy (and then collect commissions) is WORSE than this appointment of CTY to the P.C.?

    5. 唯才是用. Use the best talents. Let TY learn from bottom. If he is good, he can fight for presidency years later. That's his capabilitylah. Like LGE & Lee Hsien Loong. If they are no good, do you think they could be come no.1 (in Penang & Singapore respectively)?

    6. We should discuss bigger/more important issueslah. Otherwise MCA will still be under the well man!

  7. NOTHING SO WRONG TO APPOINT CHUA TY INTO PRESIDENTIAL COUNCIL. THERE IS NO MORE BACKBENCHER OTHER THAN TY CAPABLE CARRYING MCA DEBATE IN TO DEWAN RAKYAT.

THE OTHER MCA BACK BENCHERS ARE:

    1) DR FONG EX-MINISTER
    2) ONG KA TING-EX-MINISTER
    3) ONG KA CHUA-EX MINISTER
    4) ONE WANITA FROM JOHOR (BM VERY POOR)

DO YOU EVER HEAR THEM DEBATING IN THE PARLIAMENT? THEY DO NOT EVEN BOTHER TO ASK QUESTION. KEEP YOUR BIAS AWAY, YOUR ARGUEMENT IS ONLY FIT FOR COFFEE SHOP.

  8. Agreed with Sdra Peter Tan.

Those who still "cry father cry mother" (yelling here and there) after the party 328 election MAY leave the party. Becoz we know you are not going to contribute anything but destructions!

We must now look out for enemies outside the MCA/BN. We should not emulate Ka Ting (last timelah) who only dared to poke his own party comrades....

As I notice, CSL is already very accomodative. "Semua ada habuan." Every faction got shares.

In the next 24 months if MCA ( and Gerakan too) does not "recover", it will be abandoned by the Chinese community.

  9. "ONE WANITA FROM JOHOR (BM VERY POOR)"

That lady is Gelang Patah [P162] MP, YB Tan Ah Eng.

MCE standard. Poor BM. That's why she was not picked by Najib to be the deputy minister when TEE KEAT reccommended after Oct 2008 party election.

Chua Tee Yong was also not chosen by the PM becoz he was too fresh then.

    http://www.mca.org.my/English/Leadership/Pages/MCAMembersofParliament.aspx

So the Sec-Gen of Wanita MCA Heng Seai Kie was instead appointed a senator and made deputy minister of education.

But YB Tan Ah Eng is an important grassroots leader. This we have to recognize and admit.

She may be made a deputy minister after the Hulu Selangor by-election....

    Got many vacancies, right? hehehehe

  14. agreed with anon 11.44 am, yb chua has participated many times in the debate. but because he spoke on essential but not controversial issues, no media attention given to him. go to his blog and read the speech contents. YB tan ah eng is typical grass root leader like YB Lee Chee Liong from Perak alos very poor command of BM.

High ranking officers in Wisma Putra used to poke fun at himlah. Chinese media do not know anything about this. For Chinese reporter covering parliamentary events, their own BM also half past six, therefore they also cannot judge the BM standard of chinese minister and deputy ministers. To them, anybody who open their mouth continuously and be able to read a BM text, he BM is ok already.

    Madam Tan

    ReplyDelete
  15. Then why the bloody hell did MCA chose people who are not qualified to stand for election. Grassroot leader is one thing. But if he or she is not qualified to go to parliament then dont send them . Cekai MCA.

If Chua junior only speak of safe subject and sokong all the time, he is useless. He should not be there in the first place. celaka.

  16. YOU MUST A FRESHIE IN POLITICS, FULL OF RHETORICS, FANTACIES, SHORT OF PRAGMATISIM. IN THE FIRST PLACE, NOT MANY CAPABLE YOUNG PEOPLE ARE WILLING TO SLOG IT OUT AT GRASS ROOT LEVEL. THEY ARE ONLY INTERESTED IN BECOMING YB. SECONDLY MCA LIKE MANY OTHER OLD PARTIES, UMNOM MIC ARE ONLY MEANT FOR AGEING PEOPLE. YOUNG AND EDUCATED PEOPLE HAS NO PLACE IN MCA BECAUSE THEY ARE SEEN AS A THREAT TO THE OLD PEOPLE.

OLD PEOPLE WILL TRY TO GET RID OF YOUNG AND EDUCATED MEMBERS. THOSE REMAINING YOUNG PEOPLE IN MCA ARE MOSTLY NOT EDUCATED OR SEMI-ILLITERATE. THEY PAY MONEY TO PEOPLE TO WRITE PRESS STATEMENT IN CHINESE PRESS AND BY DOING SO, CHINESE COMMUNITY WILL LOOK UPON THEM AS VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE PEOPLE. THIS SORT OF SPINNING AND CHEATING HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR A LONG LONG TIME. THIS BLOG CAN START A DEBATE ON THIS ISSUE.

I KNOW OF THE NEWLY ELECTED CC MEMBERS (ON THE 25TH SPOT), VERY YOUG AND HANDSOME, LOOK LIKE VERY EDUCATED BUT IN ACTUAL FACT, HE IS ONE OF THE MANY YOUNG SEMI-ILLITERATE MAKING THEIR WAY INTO THE PARTY HIGHEST ORGAN. SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY HAVE A LITTLE BIT OF MONEY WITH THEM. IMAGINE YOU HAVE SEMI-ILLITERATE PEOPLE LEADING THE SO CALLED VERY SMART PEOPLE LIKE YOU. YOU BELIEVE THEY CAN CONTRIBUTE TO THE COMMUNITY ? THEY ARE THERE TO VALUE ADD THEIR OWN PUBLIC IMAGE ONLY.

Anwar said that CTY's speech was first half by MCA and 2nd half by UMNO.

Not willing to admit that some one prepare the speech for him, CTY said that no, he prepare the speech himself.

Anwar trapped CTY and said, ok, that means you have been UMNONISED and no need UMNO to write for you but you can think like UMNO.

    Ya, smart kid, Tee Yong.

  24. MCA is a waste of time. I dare say majority of mca leader are enriching themselves with positions in party, they dont care how public regards them cos self interest is more important whether the party can survive in next election. As what we witness recently, we have ltl, wks, cmf n gang outrageous behavior to get rid of otk. They cries, tell lies but they dont care as long did achieve their agenda. The recent election confirmed MCA a VERY corrupted party.

  26. Who is insulting whose family member ? people are commenting on the son who was parachuted into MCA before the GE and made a candidate with less than one year membership . Under MCA constitution no one with less than three years membership can be made a central delegate or contest for a central delegate , let alone be made a parliamentary candidate ! Do you understand this provision ? Why is he given this special consideration ? Just because his father is a pornstar ? Dumbass !

And posting a comment is not blogging ! You understand the difference between blogging and commenting ? Dumbass !
