MCA: Is boycott a sensible move?

KUALA LUMPUR - Is boycotting party functions and events an appropriate way to solve the prolonged leadership crisis in MCA, the second largest Barisan Nasional component?

Those aligned to MCA vice-president Liow Tiong Lai, feel that boycott is the only option to show their dissatisfaction against the party leadership led by president Ong Tee Keat and deputy Dr Chua Soi Lek.

After failing to push for a fresh party election to pick the national leaders, party insiders say the move by Liow is to create a perception that all is not well in the party and there is a split.

Liow's faction over the past months have been trying to get two-thirds of the party's all-powerful central committee to resign en bloc in the bid to force for fresh polls. This, however, failed as only 13 CC members submitted their undated and unconditional resignation letters.

Against principle of democracy

"They just want to show that the party continues to be disunited in order to force a fresh party election. Basically, they are running out of options as they cannnot call for the EGM after they missed the opportunity in November.

"The momentum is not there anymore. It will be difficult to push for fresh polls through an EGM. So, the only option available is to boycott (party events) to show that the resistence is still there," said a party insider.

Former MCA secretary-general Dr Ting Chew Peh said Liow's faction should not resort to such a drastic action as this was very much against the principle of democracy.

"If you are in the CC, whether you like it or not, you've got to follow the decision made although there might have been differences of opinion. If you can't, then you've got to quit," he said.

Ting said the action by Liow's group was not only improper but also bad for the party's image.

"You cannot force people to resign to have your way. If they (Liow's faction) put party interest above their own, they should sit down and work together with the current leaders and other CC members," he said.

MCA veteran Yap Pian Hon said the action by Liow's faction was "akin to declaring war against your own party" and showed glaring immaturity in handling the party's internal crisis.

Yap said they should realise that they were voted in by party members, and the government positions given to them was based on the party's recommendations.

"They have a social responsibility to help the party, not to destroy it. You can disagree with others' opinions but once the decision is made, you cannot resort to a boycott. Otherwise, you must have the courage to resign.

"You cannot talk about integrity and not practise it. What they are doing is very serious to the party," he said.

The statement issued by Liow's faction Tuesday is rather vague as it does not state clearly the party functions and activities that would be boycotted.

While the Mandarin version of the statement does not mention the names of the present leadership, the English version clearly makes mention of Ong and Dr Chua.

Asked by reporters Tuesday whether his faction would boycott the upcoming party anniversary celebration, annual general meeting or any presidential council or CC meeting, Liow was silent except for a nod, which has been interpreted as 'Yes' by the media.

Utterly irresponsible act

Party sources close to the faction claimed that they purposely did not specifically mention the functions or activities as they claimed the party election could still be held any time soon.

Once Ong and Chua could reach a consensus, there would be fresh polls, the sources said.

Wong Nai Chee, a CC member aligned to Liow said their group decided on the boycott as they insisted that fresh polls were the ultimate solution to the party crisis while some members had lost faith in Ong and Chua.

"By not having a fresh election, they are dragging the party into further chaos. It is an utterly irresponsible act.

"The party is currently in a chaotic state as the leaders are not respecting the resolutions of the Oct 10 EGM, which passed a motion of no confidence against the president and rejected Chua's reinstatement as deputy president," he said. - Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 4 — The MCA has come out to support the controversial High Court ruling on the usage of the word ‘Allah’ despite the Barisan Nasional federal government appealing the decision that has caused an uproar among the majority Muslim population.

The party said it was taken aback by demonstrations against the ruling as it was “grave cause for alarm as to whether worshippers of other faiths may profess their religion freely in accordance with Article 11, peacefully and harmoniously (Article 3), and to educate their children in their own religion (Article 12(2)) of the Federal Constitution”.

“The police reports lodged also suggest questioning and asserting pressure on the independence of the judiciary should one disagree with any judgement made,” MCA spokesman Gan Ping Sieu said in a statement released here.

MCA is the first Barisan Nasional component party to laud the ruling, adding it also welcomed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s call for all quarters to remain calm and not resort to demonstrations, petitions and memoranda on the matter.

Gan also hit out at those who said the Dec 31 ruling that allowed Catholic weekly Herald to use ‘Allah’ to describe the Christian God in its national language edition would confuse Muslims.

“Deploying “confusion” as grounds for insistence on the ban by detractors is a poor attempt to throw a red herring i.e. deliberate attempt to divert attention from the real issue of law and constitutional rights of Malaysians to freedom of religion and to profess their faith peacefully and harmoniously.

“Any individual imbued with an iron will on his faith yet is open-minded to respecting, reading and learning clinically the creeds and practices of other religions in the world will remain true to his original religious conviction without any consideration of renunciation,” he added.

The party spokesman also said no group should claim exclusive ownership of “Allah” as it is not a patented copyright by any ethnic group.

“‘Allah’ is used by different believers throughout the world. For time immemorial, Sikhs refer to their God as “Allah.” Renowned 19th century Malay Muslim scholar and linguist, Munshi Abdullah who translated “God” as “Allah” into the Malay language remained a pious Muslim and was never confused,” he noted.

Gan said an individual’s definition of ‘God’ should not be used as justification to declare others’ usage of ‘Allah’ as inappropriate and thus deprive and deny the rights of followers of a separate religion to continue using ‘Allah’ to practise his/her faith be it in publications, scriptures, in church/gurdwara services and oral references during personal prayers.

“To do so contravenes the Federal Constitution and serves to create confusion, and this is where the confusion really lays — the confusion as to the application of law and rights as enshrined therein, and not a confusion of faiths.

“If “Allah” is to remain exclusive to one section of society, are other segments of society to be deprived of the right to pledge allegiance to the royalty and sing state anthems which contain the word “Allah”?” he asked.

Gan also pointed out that it was an historical fact that ‘Allah’ predates Islam and is commonly used by Arabic speakers of the Abrahamic faiths including Muslims, Christians and Jews, pointedly refuting and viewing “flawed any interpretation that Arab Christians refer to God as ‘Tuhan’ and not 1Allah1 as claimed by a prominent Malaysian who has retired from public office”.

“Since all Arab, Middle Eastern and Indonesian Christians are able to refer to God as ‘Allah’ freely, harmoniously without threat of punitive action, should not we in Malaysia follow suit in accordance with Article 3 of the Federal Constitution which allows “other religions may be practised in peace and harmony in the Federation?”

Such exemplary practices would live up to the 1Malaysia concept of mutual respect and understanding besides forging closer ties amongst all Malaysians.

“Does it make sense to take punitive action against the hundreds and thousands of Bahasa Malaysia speaking Christians and Sikhs and who for centuries have referred to God as “Allah” in their personal prayers?” he also asked.

On the court judgment, he said it was a matter of law in upholding the rights of Malaysians under the Federal Constitution and should be seen as just that.

“Conditions for the renewal of The Herald’s permit clearly state that the word “Terhad” must be affixed at the top of the masthead and the publication must only be sold within church grounds. These conditions are already being met.

“The court’s decision should not be stirred into a religious debate nor politicised as a racial/religious issue. MCA lauds the High Court for its bold and rational judgement. Our party calls upon all groups to respect the way of life of Bumiputera Christians and Sikh Malaysians, and not remove their constitutional rights,” Gan said.

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 8 — MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat said 29 central committee members (CC) have given their support to the party’s Greater Unity Plan (GUP).

He said the fact that 29 of the 42 CC members had given their support in writing showed that more were in favour of the plan.

On the planned second extraordinary general meeting (EGM), Ong said although the group had received more than one-third support from CC members, it was not the only issue.

“The EGM is to solve the problem, not create one. It was the legal bureau which said that the EGM resolutions are against the party constitution, not me,” he said when launching a lifelong health carnival here today.

The transport minister stressed that any action to be taken should be in accordance with the party constitution.

He said the legal bureau had studied resolutions for the second EGM and told CC members that they were against the party constitution.

The group supporting MCA vice president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai planned to hold the EGM on Nov 28 to get the mandate for fresh party elections. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 7 — Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat moved today to block an attempt by leaders aligned to Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai to hold another party EGM on Nov 28.

The party president’s political secretary Simon Lim declared today that any EGM convened shall be unlawful because the requisitionists did not provide a valid reason for one of their proposed resolutions.

Supporters of Liow put up full-page advertisements in major Chinese newspapers today giving notice for their proposed EGM, after the party headquarters controlled by Ong refused to host the proposed meeting which is aimed at paving the way for fresh polls to solve the leadership crisis.

In the newspaper notices, two resolutions are being proposed.

The first is for the party to hold fresh party elections based on the following reasons:

• that Ong had disrespected the decision of the EGM on Oct 10 that approved a motion of no confidence in his leadership; What a hulaboo ! ! ! is no confidence read as removal , have to resign ? What about the Party Constitution on the two thirds requirement ?

• that the greater unity plan of Ong and Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek is shrouded in secrecy; Is it ? how come everyone seems to be informed except the conspirators ?

• that the Oct 10 EGM vote of no confidence against Ong, while denying the reinstatement of Dr Chua as party deputy president, has not been respected; and Isn't the Party Constitution supreme ? ? and has to be respected ? Are you conspirators respecting the Constitution ?

• that since Oct 10, Ong and Dr Chua are unable to work with the central committee. Or is it the other way round ? That you are all unable to work with the Party ?

The second resolution calls for the nullification of any changes made by Ong to party positions after Oct 10.

Lim said that a serious and grave flaw to the notice was that no reasons or grounds were given in proposing the second resolution and this showed a failure to comply with the party constitution.

“Therefore the reasons published in advertisements in Chinese newspapers are false and stand to be corrected.

“Thus, there are no valid reasons to convene a second EGM. Any EGM convene shall be unlawful.”

The Malaysian Insider understands that the plan basically entails concessions from Ong to appoint leaders aligned to Dr Chua to significant party positions.

Liow and his supporters are arguing that it was quite clear that a majority of the delegates at the Oct 10 EGM made a decision which pointed towards fresh elections. I didn't know ......until you Brutus said so

BN chairman Datuk Seri Najib Razak is hoping that the peace plan between Ong and Dr Chua will hold and put an end to the infighting, but signs are that will not happen.

Many in the broader Chinese community, including those in the guilds and clan associations, have looked upon the antics with some distaste.

Ong, the party president, has been blamed for much of the troubles MCA finds itself in.

Scathing editorials in the fiercely-independent Chinese newspapers have pointed the fingers at Ong.

This week, Sin Chew Daily, the country’s No. 1 Chinese newspaper, even went to the extent of calling Ong the worst MCA president in history. ? ? ?

This will make it hard for an MCA under Ong to recapture Chinese votes which are now solidly for the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) parties, particularly the DAP. Is that so ? ? ?

But for now Ong has used the power of incumbency well to ensure he will remain as MCA president.

BREAKING NEWS The problem-riddled MCA will witness another extraordinary general meeting (EGM) on Nov 28, in order to allow central delegates to decide on whether a fresh polls is necessary to resolve the internal crisis.

This news appeared in Malaysiakini , however on checking with party sources , it seems that this EGM is called by Brutus and Conspirators and have nothing to do with the Party .

Therefore this EGM is unconstitutional and NOT sanctioned by the Party .
It only goes to show how desperate these people are to give the public a bad image of the Party , how messy the Party is in , and to give an image that the President cannot control the Party .

If this EGM is thrown out by the court , I have reasons to believe that this will be challenged legally , then the requisitors will have to face the Disciplinary process .

KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 26, 2009) : There is no let-up by MCA's third force players in their bid to bring down president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat and former deputy Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek despite the greater unity plan that ended their rivalry.

The "Ong and Chua must go!" battle cry drummed up by the third force prior to the Oct 10 extraordinary general meeting continues to ferment at the grassroots level.

According to a report in China Press today, the third force is trying to stir discontent among central delegates in its bid to create another round of anti-Ong and Chua action.

Party insiders said with Ong and Chua agreeing to a greater unity plan and newly-elected deputy president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai being accused of being a "betrayer", the identities of third force leaders are coming out in the open.

They said the greater unity plan has indeed upset the third force's plans as nobody expected Ong to be able to team up with Chua in such a short time.

The insiders said the various factions making up the third force were very close to achieving their aim of removing Ong and Chua, but two factions had their own agendas and tried to outdo each other in their haste to grab power, thus putting paid to their earlier efforts.

It was learnt that the two main factions aside, the third force also has smaller groups.

"These factions have a common goal, but their leaders are rather smart and had chosen to stay "invisible".

The insiders said to salvage the situation, some of the third force leaders have openly criticised Ong and Chua, and more of them are expected to do so.

Meanwhile, Oriental Daily News reported that the Youth wing, unhappy with Ong and Chua for their lack of transparency in coming up with the greater unity plan and making the party a laughing stock, is planning a signature campaign to requisition another EGM to remove Ong.

On the other hand, the daily, as well as China Press, reported that a group within the Youth wing is also planning a Youth EGM to move a no-confidence vote against chairman Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong for his post-Oct 10 EGM actions which it said was not befitting a Youth leader.

Wee along with Wanita chief Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun had criticised Ong and Chua for not abiding by the decisions reached in the EGM.

China Press said an SMS purportedly saying the Youth wing is planning an EGM is being circulated but Wee's aide has dismissed the SMS as nonsensical and malicious.

Their joint statement said after the Oct 10 extraordinary general meeting (EGM), it was Ong who said that because of moral obligation, he would step down and he had requested both of them and CC member Wong Hock Aun to draft him a "resignation statement".

They said the statement was prepared in the meeting room on the 9th floor of the MCA headquarters and was handed to Ong.

Wee and Chew said the purpose of having an EGM was to resolve problems and not to create a bigger problem.

"We regret that he (Ong) is questioning the outcome of the (Oct 10) EGM and is refusing to accept the outcome even though he had said that he would respect and accept the results of the EGM," the statement said.

On Ong's decision to call another EGM to decide whether to call for fresh party election for the CC, the statement said: "What if the outcome of the next EGM is another 50:50? Do we need to call for the third EGM to confirm the result of the second EGM? We urge everyone to accept the outcome of the (Oct 10) EGM and stop the argument.

Are you telling the truth , nothing but the truth ? So help you God !

1) On their claims that the CC did not force Party President Ong Tee Keat to step down ..is pressuring the same as forcing ? If you claim what is right , why did you and your collaborators signed a document or a petition asking the president to resign ? Is asking the President to step down the same as asking the President to resign ? What if I can prove that that document tantamounts to asking the president to resign . Would you three then tender your resignation for attempting to bluff the Chinese Community ?

2) That President had requested both of you ( Wee & Chew ) and CC member Wong Hock Aun to draft him a " resignation statement " Why the three of you ? and not others ? Don't you think that he could have drafted it himself or ask his pol sec to draft it for him ? Or are you implying that the president is so stupid to be not even able to draft a resignation letter himself and need to ask you three to do it for him ? Who are you trying to bluff ? or bull ? You three could have refused if you were with him , you could have asked him NOT to resign but instead you three drafted the letter ? Want to tell a lie , tell it more convincingly .

3) EGM was to resolve problem and not to create a bigger problem . That is correct however you three didn't support it and manipulate the EGM to suit your vested interests and that is , the both of you Wee and Chew took this opportunity to " promote " your political interests hoping to become Ministers .

4) That the two of you regret that he (Ong ) is questioning the outcome of the EGM and refusing to accept the outcome . Why should he when even the drafters of the resolution says that Ong need not resign as it does not specifically says that he must step down . Then again the party constitution says two thirds majority is required . Is 14 votes two thirds majority ? To resign is easy , to resign with responsibilty and leaving the party in capable or able hands is another factor or matter . You do not leave the party where everyone is for himself leaving the party in tatters . The second EGM is to enable the CDs to re-elect a new leadership , thus the president is paving the way by resigning , which you all have been asking him to do so . Isn't this what you all wanted ? Why the objection now ? Or is it you only want him to resign and not you two and the others ?

What hypocrisy is this ? I have lost words to describe people like you all , those who signed the petition .

PETALING JAYA (Oct 18, 2009) : The ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition's dominant party Umno concluded last week's historic annual general assembly, featuring an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) to amend its constitution, without a hitch.

Like MCA's many other EGMs, it was inconclusive because there was a lack of acceptance to the outcome of the EGM and a lack of respect for the party constitution.

Before the EGM, all quarters and leaders swore they would respect the decision of the delegates but what has happened?

They began putting forth arguments, various interpretations of the decision, ignoring the party constitution. That is their version of accepting and respecting the decision of the delegates.

If Umno members can respect their constitution, make selfless decisions for the party's well being, and leave it at that, why can't MCA?

Every political party has a constitution to ensure lawlessness is not the order of the day. No consensus will prevail if members continue to put forth other factors to challenge the delegates' decision and constitution.

For MCA, the constitution clearly states that the president can only be removed from office in an EGM with the support of two-thirds of the central delegates. To continue challenging that is disrespectful to the Constitution . Period !

Embattled president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat has called for another EGM so that members (in this case the 2,380 central delegates) can decide whether they want to remove the central committee (CC) members to pave the way for fresh party elections.

To say the least, those who objected to EGM2 are simply afraid to face the delegates and members for their own selfish reasons. They have bandied about all sorts of reasons to justify remaining in office.

All party members are supreme or paramount because they make up the party. Not the CC, presidential council or individuals.

Before the 10/10 EGM, Ong said that he would have to quit if he loses the confidence vote. He has not. Neither has he said he will not.

Quitting is one thing, leaving the party in tatters will smack of irresponsibility.

A sizeable number of CC members who were aligned to Ong have decided not to "sink or swim" with their president. Whatever happened to collective decision?

Under section 30.1 as provided by the Party Constitution , the President has the power to call for an EGM as directed by the President . Why are these "conspirators" objecting to the President's call for an EGM ?

Is the party's Constitution a piece of worthless paper or is it Toilet Paper ?

ANALYSIS Ong Tee Keat looks set to be remembered as the most audacious MCA president to date.

His refusal to throw in the towel after losing the vote of no-confidence at the Oct 10 extraordinary general meeting (EGM) not only defied the mounting pressure for him to quit, but led to mutiny among his supporters.

Many have switched allegiance to acting deputy president Liow Tiong Lai, backing him to take over from Ong while dismissing the call for fresh polls so that they can protect their posts.

See all the bullshitt written by them .. claims to be fighting for transparency , corruption , etc but here they are trying to RUN DOWN Ong who has put his Presidency in the line of firing for exposing the PKFZ issue . The night before the ill-fated Oct 15 central committee (CC) meeting, more than 20 of its 42 members met at a hotel next to MCA headquarters in Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur.

Their purpose was to sign a letter of no-confidence in Ong's leadership and to urge him to step down. Signatories included Ong's right-hand man and secretary-general Wong Foon Meng and publicity chief Lee Wei Keat.

Malaysiakini learned that one CC member, who refused to sign the document, was confronted by a group of 10. But he insisted that group leader Liow should meet with Ong, and that the ultimatum should not be served.

Rebellion quelled

Ong, who had obviously learned about the mutiny, came prepared to the meeting. He mobilised 500 hardcore supporters who gathered in front of the headquarters as a show of force.

According to sources, as soon as the CC meeting started, Ong declared his intention to call for another EGM on the ground that the outcome of the first was open to interpretation.

He also said that, since all the CC members had endorsed the disciplinary action to suspend Chua's membership, they should also assume responsibility now that Chua's membership has been reinstated.

Before the EGM, Ong had pledged to quit if he was beaten even by a simple majority. His suggestion that CC members should now take collective responsibility by resigning did not go down well, with many claiming that they had been railroaded into sacking Chua.

When the meeting discussed the vote of no-confidence, Ong refused to indicate whether he would quit. Before he could finish speaking, however, Wong Siong Hwee of Kelantan fired the first salvo and pressed for his resignation.

Others expressed support, including veteran Wong Mook Leong who banged the table and told Ong pointedly: "You should give us an answer (as to whether you will resign); you must honour your pledge."

Ong shot back sarcastically: "Although the dead (person) has not being buried, some have already started to stage a coup."

His loyalist Heng Seai Kie, almost in tears, suggested that Ong had only "fallen ill" and that the CC should instead look for a way to cure him.

MCA Wanita chief Chew Mei Fun and party spokesperson Wong Nai Chee then stood up to demand Ong's resignation.

Under pressure, Ong suddenly issued a threat: "Stop pressuring me, don't force me to reveal the truth!"

His words send chills down the spines of members, who fell silent.

There is the main player , the stricker aiming for his goal , ie Chua Soiled Leg , who undoubtly paid one of the highest prices to become an MCA member . Most of us only paid RM100 for a life member while the rest paid $2 a year ordinary membership . I understand its in the region of double digit , six zeros ( millions ).

Then there are the mid fielders , too many to name , but let me name a few , the Chow Ka Seong, then we have the Chow Mei Fun ( Noodles cook in starch with egg ) and Handsome Boy Liow , even a typhoon won't be able to blow his hair off .

Then , there are the supporters or fan club members who provided the drums , the gongs , these has beens or ex footballers hoping to be recalled or to make it back into the team are providing the clowns side shows . The financiers , from the big companies called Kuda Bomensi , and others who have pledge to finance the whole operation or training exercise .

The Armno Club Managers who decides who to field and whom he wants to win , your guess is as good as mine whom we are talking about , the unseen hand who places all the big bets in their private rooms , some of whom have surfaced to demand our star player to be removed , to step down . Just to name a few, we have the Kerismuddin guy , The Tengku guy who was mentioned in the Lingam's correct , correct , correct case , and the MOHiding , not Ministry of Hell in hiding , fella .

Then we have our own players who made sure they shoot into our own goals , just to make sure what the Boss wants , the Big Time punters want , gets what they want . Yeah shoot into our own goal posts . Need to name ? 22 of them , including the Sec Gen . What a shame Wong ! Please put your head under the sarong provided . There is some light though from Perak , three of them didn't sign , Ms Heng , Lee and Mah didn't sign . The 22 famous names can be found in the Chinese newspapers , go read them and find out who likes to shoot into their own goals .

Not forgetting the football hooligans club who insisted that their members must follow the crowd . They have a big following , comprising of the Wah Kee group who is under the control of the Bentong guy and who have quite a following among the CDs , the other being the Red Door who have thier influence in Perak notably with a taikor going by the surname of Ong . Likes to 'chuan' or squeeze others into submission .

So you can see OTK was playing football single handedly against the whole field and yet they only managed to get a penalty shoot . 14 votes majority ! OTK is indeed the STAR player to have outplayed the whole bunch of them .

I would like to thank those 1141 delegates who voted without fear , without the influence of money politics , with their brain not with their emotions , with their loyalty and dignity to support Ong Tee Keat by voting NO to the vote of no confidence . To you all , you have my highest respect . Thank You .

Tee Keat calls for EGM

KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 15, 2009) : Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat is staying put as MCA president despite the party’s central delegates approving a no-confidence motion in his leadership at last Saturday’s extraordinary general meeting.

Ong Tee Keat is greeted by supporters on his arrival at Wisma MCA.

He has instead called for another EGM to decide if there should be fresh elections for the central committee (CC).

The CC, which met for four hours today, also appointed vice-president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai as deputy president.

There was no press conference and Ong posted a statement on his blog (www.ongteekeat.com) to explain the decisions.

Ong, who said before the Oct 10 EGM that he would have to resign if he lost the no-confidence resolution by a simple majority, thanked supporters who had shown deep concern and encouraged him following the EGM. He said he was heartened by calls urging him to stay as party president.

"Over the years, my political career has been guided by my conscience and the people’s aspirations.

"People who know me well know that I uphold my principles in my political practice. It has never been my practice to renege on my words, including what I had pledged earlier with regard to the outcome of the EGM," he said.

He said the disciplinary action to suspend former deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek for tarnishing the party’s image was a collective decision of the party presidential council and CC.

"Hence, the onus and responsibility is not on me alone, but collectively. That being the case, I had proposed to have fresh polls to seek a fresh mandate from the party, especially the outcome of the EGM was inconclusive and indicate that the grassroots were divided.

"The best way out of this situation is to seek the re-affirmation of the MCA leadership.

"However any hopes for fresh polls were dashed because certain quarters are worried that I would renege on my word and decide to stay as the party president. This is absolutely baseless," he said.

Ong said because of this, he had decided to go back to the grassroots and he had directed party secretary-general Datuk Wong Foon Meng to call for an EGM under Article 30.1 of the party constitution to decide whether the party should hold fresh polls.

"The EGM will allow delegates to end the impasse over whether the CC should seek a fresh mandate," he said.

Ong disclosed that he still has a long list of unfinished business involving party and public interests, like the direct election of the MCA presidency and the Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ) issue.

He said it is his wish to see such issues be addressed without any abrupt disruption.

Impatient and Greedy MCA Vultures

Ong Tee Keat lost by a razor thin margin of 14 votes but under the party constitution, only a two-third majority could force the president to step down. Moreover the resolution was flawed in many ways and does not explicitly says that Ong must step down if he loses the vote and also for it to be carried , it must have a two-third majority from the assembly . The resolution should have been worded in this manner " This Assembly hereby puts a vote of no confidence on the President and he must resign . However this was NOT the case . The Party Constitution is Supreme and all should abide by it .

Many want the throne

Soon after the results were announced, ambitious leaders, who have one thing in mind – to grab power – have been meeting on the sidelines and brokering deals to strike up an understanding on who should take the lead in the one-million membership party.

But too many leaders are now staking a claim for the throne. Vice-president Kong Cho Ha had said that he was ready to helm the party while another vice president Dr Ng Yen Yen feels that she is the most senior in the party to lead the party.

Even those who lost in the party elections just last year are now banking on fresh party polls to make a comeback.

It will be no surprise if Chua also attempt a comeback by contesting in the fresh polls. Even those forgettable leaders like Dr Fong Chan Onn and former vice-president Donald Lim Siang Chai have expressed their wish to also jump in the bandwagon for the coveted title in the party.

The contentious issue here is whether at the end of the day, MCA will still remain intact with such an open multi-cornered fight for the party leadership.

Such a scenario is most frightening as one could imagine a scene of a gold find in a river and everyone rushing to prospect the precious metal but in the rush for it, many may get trampled or even drown because of their greed.

The sad thing is that even when Ong had not expressed his intention of stepping down, leaders in the party are already making plans for his exit without disregarding the implications and repercussions on the party in the long run. They just want to grab power.Just like vultures going for the kill and meat .

The situation can be likened to a family staking claims on the heirloom even though the head of family is still very much alive. This is very “un-Chinese” and against the cultural traditions of a good upbringing.

One thing for sure is that the party will be left without a fearless leader who dares to put his head on the chopping board, if Ong were to step down. Secondly, the MCA will be a “push over” by Umno, the big brother in Barisan Nasional.

Thirdly, will the MCA be looked up by the people with great respect and trust in spearheading a just and accountable government or that it would lose its appeal and get rejected by the people in the general election to come in two or three years.

Ong is a hard headed man who is able to hold his fist tightly and stand firm on his ground on pertinent issues or that concerning the interest of the party. He is certainly no easy pushover.

It is because of his traits that did not go down well with the big boys in Umno who preferred a docile leader who can be manipulated.

It is actually a great disgrace that some of the party’s leaders were already clamouring for positions even when Ong had not expressed his intention of quitting his post.

The party is already showing signs of crumbling amidst infighting among the top leaders and Ong should not take the easy way out by turning his back and stepping down.

It would be unbecoming of a leader to leave his house in disarray and not help save the party from further destruction by holding the ruins together and rebuilding it from ground zero.

There are many things left undone, not just in MCA but also within the government machinery. Ong should not abandon those who have put their trust in him. He should stay put.

PETALING JAYA (Oct 14, 2009): The MCA central committee (CC) should not appoint the deputy president to take over from Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat should he resign his presidential post tomorrow, said Save MCA campaigner Datuk Theng Book.

Theng told a press conference today that since Ong has lost the support of the majority in the party, he must step down but a vacated president's post can only be filled by a deputy president as stipulated under the party constitution. Furthermore, the CC has no power to appoint any CC member to be the president.

He said the committee should also not appoint a deputy president merely to take over the president's post because the status of former deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek, who was not reinstated at the extraordinary general meeting (EGM) on Saturday, is still debatable.

"Chua was reinstated as a member and he should have his post back because the party accepted the fact that when the six-month suspension of Ipoh Timur chief Datuk Thong Fah Chong was lifted, his status as central delegate and division chief was recognised by the party and he was allowed to vote in the EGM.

"Chua is still legally the deputy president although a resolution not to reinstate him was passed at the EGM. We want the MCA legal bureau to clarify his status and we hope the party will treat him fairly as it did Thong," he said.

Theng said the sentiment among the grassroots was that they would not accept the CC sharing the 'spoils of war' at a closed-door meeting because whoever was appointed would not reflect their choice and the best way to resolve the crisis was for the CC to resign and pave the way for fresh party elections.

However, he said it is acceptable for the CC to have an interim president provided fresh elections are held by end of the year although there is no such position as interim president under the party constitution.

"Another way is to call for a referendum under Article 171 of the party constitution to allow the highest authority, which is the central delegates to decide when the party constitution is unable to solve the problem," he said.

Dato Sri Najib Tun Razak is the most powerful man in Malaysia. But back in the 1999 general election, he barely survived an onslaught in his home turf, Pekan. The scion of the country's second PM, who inherited the seat which houses the Pahang royal household, scrapped through with a bare 241 votes out of almost 36,000 votes cast.

Fact 1 - The majority for OTK's no-confidence vote in perspective

During his time, he was more powerful than Najib would ever be, but Tun Dr Mahathir has had his share of scares too. In the 1987 Umno fallout, the Father of Modern Malaysia was almost toppled by Kelantan prince Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah. Dr M won the cliffhanger Umno election by 43 votes, out of about 1,500 votes cast - a majority just enough to fill an express bus.

Ong Tee Keat lost the 10/10 MCA EGM by 14 votes, out of 2,300-odd delegates who voted. In percentage terms, that's much lower than Najib's majority in Pekan in 1999. Sure, OTK lost unlike Najib and TDM. So what? All three faced a bloody revolt. It's just a matter of whether the cup was slightly over half-empty or slightly over half-full.

Fact 2 - Delegates to the political parties' general assemblies DO NOT represent the voice of the people

Want proof? OTK won only 49 per cent support. But in a recent survey by Merdeka Centre (http://www.merdeka.org/v2/download/Survey%20Report%202.pdf ), OTK is way ahead in popularity among the public and is the only MCA leader who garnered a double-digit score. Let's face it, delegates are easily influenced by monetary and other percuniary considerations. And Chua Soi Lek was throwing them like Father Christmas. RM300,000 was given to a Kedah divisional chairman on the eve of EGM. It's a myth that delegates' voice is supreme.

If it were, Samy Vellu would have been kicked out a zillion years ago. And Ali Rustam would have won the Umno deputy president's post in March had the party's disciplinary board not nailed him on (trumped-up?) corruption charges. Of course PM Najib understood that delegates can be swayed. Why else did he officiate at the Makkal Sakthi party on October 10, one week shy of the Festival of Lights? It was a slap in the face on MIC delegates who chose to return Uncle Samy as the MIC president.

Fact 3 - The MCA EGM deviated from its original objective

The EGM was to settle the dipute between OTK and CSL. Just as George W. Bush called on fellow Americans to choose between him or the evil terrorists during the 2002 state-of-the-union address following the September 11 attacks, the MCA EGM was to be a battlefront to choose between OTK OR CSL - no one else is in the equation.

But a group of opportunists saw a window of opportunity to unseat both so that they could use the backdoor for fast-track promotions - the presidency, the deputy presidency and the post of Minister of Transport. The so-called Third Force hijacked the EGM for their selfish interests.

Fact 4 - OTK's so-called supporters played him out

Headcount by OTK's inner-circle prior to the EGM was assuring. The Transport Minister would have gotten around 1,398 votes - a slight dip from the 1,429 votes he garnered during the 2008 MCA election. But still a comfortable lead, given the extenuating circumstances like the money-throwing spree CSL had embarked upon.

But some 200-300 votes slipped. No surprises there, if one understands the number of people who want to sabotage him. MCA Ministers Liow Tiong Lai and Kong Cho Ha want to be the president, or at worse, deputy. Wee Ka Siong wants to be Transport Minister. So does Chor Chee Heung, but he knows he doesn't stand a ghost of a chance. Yoo Wei How, whom OTK appointed the MCA National Organising Secretary, wants to become the MCA Youth chief when Wee Ka Siong is elevated.

Fact 5 - Post-EGM, MCA equals Malaysian Chaos Association

Can one imagine children of a dying rich man fighting over his inheritance while he himself is on the deathbed? That's what's happening to MCA now. OTK has yet to officially quit but the horse-trading has begun in earnest. One day after the EGM, as OTK nurses his battle scars overseas, vegetarian Liow Tiong Lai called for a clandestine dinner in the JW Marriot Hotel in Jln Bukit Bintang, KL.

Kong Cho Ha gladly went, thinking that LTL was going to pay homage to him as the incoming president. But when LTL proposed himself as numero uno, KCH, the taiko whom everyone in Lumut is fearful of, turned into a beast. Harsh words were exchanged and the table thumped, much to the shock of those present, including Chew Mei Fun, Loke Yuen Yeow and Liew Yuen Keong. Poor Liew Yuen Keong, who became jobless after losing the Seri Kembangan State seat in 2008, had to foot the bill as both Ministers left in a huff.

Ng Yen Yen, who spends more time overseas than Foreign Minister Anifah Aman, suddenly also found herself loving the Malaysian weather - she too was horse-trading. She has offered to be the first female MCA president, but no way in hell are LTL and KCH who has backed OTK all the way going to let that pro-CSL woman get her way. MCA is headed for troubling and chaotic times.

Fact 6 - PKFZ - NFA (No Further Action)

PKFZ is the main reason why the Third Force was willing to inflict more damage to MCA than to solve the OTK-CSL impasse and move the party forward. Let's join the dots .... Everyone knows Tiong King Sing hates OTK for what the latter has done to uncover the RM12 billion mess in PKFZ. If OTK is gone, one big hurdle is gone for TKS. Why else would a SPDP politican be among the first to call for OTK's resignation after the EGM?

Now that OTK is gone, Wee Ka Siong is almost assured of becoming the Transport Minister. And everyone in MCA knows that WKS and TKS are business partners and together they have raked in millions. WKS also has a long-term use of a room in the Berjaya Times Square Hotel, courtesy of TKS. Why else did the MCA Youth chief keep his silence when his boss OTK was at the forefront fighting Tiong? Shouldn't the Youth wing be on the frontline in an issue that resonates with Malaysians of all races?

So, with WKS in the Ministry of Transport, PKFZ is kautim insofar as Tiong is concerned. WKS would toe the line and, to be doubly sure, his predecessor in the MCA Youth section, Liow Tiong Lai would keep an eye as (hopefully) MCA president. Liow after all, is the protege of Chan Kong Choy, and share the same sifu Lim Ah Lek, the only good man, if ever there was one, in MCA. Liow is Bentong MP and listens to Bentong Boy CKC like Catholics listen to the Pope.

And CKC? Oh yeah, the man who quit it all in 2008 because of PKFZ can sleep tight now ....

‘Damn your principles. Stick to your party’

LETTER The impact of the EGM is tumultuous. The madness must cease. MCA members must stop now. They are paying the double price of smashed hopes.

In order to atone for their sins, they must take the initiative in bringing a stop to this tragic internal warfare. MCA as a party must undergo a radical transformation of values. There is nothing to keep MCA from moulding a recalcitrant membership, with bruished hands, until they fashioned it into a brotherhood. Their only hope lies in their ability to recapture the MCA spirit to face a sometimes hostile political environment from within MCA, BN and the opposition.

The members can no longer afford to worship a god of hate and bow before the alter of retaliation.

If they do not act now they will be surely be dragged down the long and dark corridors of shame.

Let us get to basics:-

MCA is an association. The contract of membership with the payment of subscription calls for the observance by all members to the rules of its constitution. In particular, there is an implied undertaking by the association to uphold those rules in good faith. It must not be in pursuance of some oblique or improper motive.

Edmund Burke once said:- ‘A party is a body of men united for promoting by their joint endeavours the national interest upon some particular principle in which they all agreed’

Therefore the party constitution is our guiding force and it is the supreme document. The ground rules of the game are all envisaged in it. All members including the president must honour it and play by those rules.

Article 35 provides:- the General Assembly may dismiss any party official if approved by at least two third of the delegates to the general assembly.

The results of the EGM resolution:- “that members of the general assembly have no confidence in the leadership of Ong Tee Keat” was adopted by 1,155 votes against 1,141.

A corollary of that result is that this resolution has failed to dismiss the president. As such Ong is still the president of the MCA.

The MCA president had pledged time and again to uphold the MCA Constitution throughout his long membership. He must continue to honour and uphold the MCA Constitution.

May I offer Benjamin Disraeli’s timely and appropriate advice to the MCA president ‘Damn your principles. Stick to your party.’

Ong’s selfless services and sacrifices for the MCA have been etched in the party’s history. He has the unflagging conviction towards the purity of MCA’s objectives and worthiness of its cause.

He has been a forthright leader who spoke up fearlessly. He exposed the excessive amounts paid for the renovations of Chinese primary schools in Johor. He spoke up on the unfair and unjust allocations of places into the local public universities.

As transport minister, he opened up the can of worms and ‘the mother of all financial scandals’- the PKFZ fiasco. We, the rakyat, have lost billions. Seemingly, powerful politicians have vested interest in this financial scandal. These vultures are out to get him.

Obviously, Ong has stepped on the toes of some powerful figures. The question is:- What has Ong not done for the Chinese Community?

The Merdeka Centre survey conducted recently has shown that the majority of the respondents feel that Ong should continue leading MCA. Numerous Chinese Community NGOs have also come forward in support that Ong should not resign.

I believe responsibility of a leader to decide what is best for the people, party and nation may at times caused some unease.

There must be times that he has erred -not able to fulfill his promises, made mistakes and shortcomings BUT I do not believe he should resign as MCA president. MCA still needs him to navigate through these troubled and stormy times.

Press Statement By MCA Central Delegates EGM action Committee

PRESS STATEMENT BY MCA CENTRAL DELEGATES’ EGM ACTION COMMITTEE

The MCA Central Delegates’ EGM Action Committee urged all MCA Central Delegates to attend the EGM on the 10th October, 2009. This EGM is called by Central Delegates to determine the destiny of the party.

Post 308 General Election, MCA is at its lowest point , the situation is worsening and the party is divided. Since the party election last year, I , Datuk Chua Soi Lek has been creating problems for the party and creating issues in dividing the party .

We have to admit that MCA today has NO impact on national politics. It has NO influence on the policies and plans of this country. We have NO direction. This is because my act was video taped and made into DVD and shown to everyone in Malaysia including big brother UMNO . Today , because of what I did , Chinese in Malaysia has lost respect for MCA and big brother UMNO has caught my balls in their palms .

For this reason, the MCA Central Delegates’ EGM Action Committee has decided to ask the delegates to vote wisely putting in mind what I have mentioned above .

We believe that this manifesto of REJECT CSL , REUNITE MCA , RESTORE MCA's Pride will provide a road map for our party leaders and members to return the MCA to its place of respect and prominence.

Today, we want a strong and united MCA. We want a party leader who serves the party and not his own interest and therefore I ask you all to vote for Ong Tee Keat .

Nothing is more important than the wishes of the majority that is to reject me CSL. This EGM is important.

One and only one choice

This Saturday, Oct 10, MCA delegates have one and only one choice. They must exercise their duty responsibly and vote with the party, community and nation uppermost in their mind. They are not there on that day to vote for personal interest.

They will individually and collectively be responsible and answerable to history whether MCA will and can survive as a united and relevant party. They will decide whether a reformed MCA can be strong enough to play its part in nation building and with dignity.

Either MCA courageously changes for the better or the party would be changed for failing the national interest as provided in the tenets and spirit of our Constitution and Rukun Negara.

It is imperative for the MCA to change before the next political tsunami hits us again. Changes must come and felt well before 2012.

In so far as the greater Chinese masses outside the party are concerned, many already think that the MCA is a dying duck. If its present leadership crisis is not re solved in the singular interest of the party, it will be a dead duck.

Ong's best qualifications

That was really sincere inter-community service with no strings attached. That was the heart of the Malay kampong folks as I knew them when I frequently patrolled those areas looking for communist terrorists. That was the heart of the Malay who could sit at the little Chinese coffee-shops in the new village sipping coffee without undue sensitivity alongside boisterous Chinese mahjong players.

On Saturday, MCA delegates have no choice but to stand by their elected incumbent president, Ong Tee Keat, whether they love him or not.

He is not a saint and this is not the time to look for a political saint but I believe Ong’s honestly and sincerity in wanting to reform MCA are his best qualifications.

We are living a political emergency in a nation where competing political forces, one professedly non-racial and the other, once substantively non-racial but had since, turned too racial presumptuously and fractured the nation with the arrogance and superiority of race.

I trust this will enlighten and bring better sense to any third group within MCA that their efforts, whatever the hopeful personal returns, will only sustain a no longer viable status quo within a relatively discredited BN.

THE MCA is literally sitting on the edge of a political precipice. Its delegates have on Saturday one and only one choice. They must in full realisation of their critical responsibility and selfless duty, not just an obligation to community, to vote only in the context of community and nation.

They will collectively be responsible and answerable in history for MCA’s survival as a united party and whether a reformed MCA can be strong enough to play its part in the nation.

In so far as the Chinese outside the party are concerned, many already think that the MCA is a dying duck. If its crisis of leadership is not solved in the interest of the party, it will be a dead duck. In any case, if it still refuses to die it can only be just an emasculated and split MCA duck with only one leg and one wing.

This at best, can only be a lame duck quacking pitifully with abject embarrassment all round – a far cry from the vibrant, impressive rakyat-conscious MCA I once knew in the Alliance despite its stigma of being a rich man’s party. It was fortunately balanced by a compassionate heart and the political will to serve its less fortunate compatriots without any prejudice to the needs of fellow Malay Malayans.

I remember during the regroupment of isolated Chinese squatter houses in the Ayer Kala area during the early emergency years, how the Malay community came in force from neighbouring Kampung Malau and Lawin to help, move and carry raised Chinese houses into a defended and perimetered new village. That was sincere inter-community service with no strings attached. That is the heart of the Malay kampung folk as I knew them when I frequently patrolled those areas looking for communist terrorists. That was the heart of the Malay who could sit at little Chinese coffee-shops in the new village sipping their coffee without undue sensitivity alongside boisterous or noisy Chinese mahjong players.

MCA delegates have no choice but to stand by their elected incumbent president, Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat, whether they love him or not. He is not a total saint and this is not the time to look for a political saint whose pleading honesty may be his best qualification but who lacks the vital elements of definitive courage, purpose and selfless decision.

We are living in a political emergency where competing political forces, one professedly non-racial and the other, once substantively non-racial but had since, become too racial.

I trust this will enlighten any third group within MCA that its efforts, whatever the hopeful personal returns, will only sustain a no longer viable status quo within a relatively discredited BN.

It is only a strong and united MCA that can support and give additional courage and will to an Umno president who was once regarded as a youth radical but as prime minister of the nation has pledged to stand by his post for the good of the nation through his 1Malaysia concept.

Let not history say the MCA, MIC and other non-racial BN parties failed to risk their all together with a prime minister who progressively must risk his all for the same multiracial nation they believe in and which their founding forefathers believed so much in.

If this is impossible because of entrenched deviant or no longer valid reasons, then an independent multiracial party comprising more nationally enlightened members from all BN parties and the now very vocal but once silent majority should now come into the act in this new party which preferably should be led by qualified Malay leadership. Race is no longer material to leadership of the nation. A good Malay leader is better than a poor and indecisive Chinese leader. As Mao Zedong stated, "as long as the cat whatever its colour or species, can catch the mice."

The time has indeed come for the crystallisation of Datuk Onn Jaffar’s dream and vision. Hopefully, his grandsons and grand-nephews and those of Tunku Abdul Rahman, Tun Ismail, Tun Hamdan Tahir and a still living Tun Ghazali Shafie, Tun Hanif Omar and Tun Rahman Yakub will personally play their part in the revival of objective Malaysia which is truly Asia.
