Ong: All races share in nation-building

Wednesday, 03 February 2010 18:29

KUALA LUMPUR - The alleged racist remarks by a former aide of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak has hurt the feelings of non-Malays, in particular the Chinese and Indians, MCA president Ong Tee Keat said Wednesday.

Ong, who is in hospital for a scheduled surgery to his heel, was responding to the remarks uttered by Nasir Safar, a former special officer to the prime minister.

In a press statement, the MCA leader said the remarks were totally inconsistent with the 1Malaysia concept espoused by Najib.

Ong, however, welcomed the PM Office's immediate clarifications that Nasir's remarks did not reflect the views of the Najib administration.

He added that each and every race had contributed greatly to the building and development of Malaysia and that these historical facts could not be disputed.

'No one is an immigrant'

"Almost all Malaysians are born and bred here. No one is an immigrant," Ong said.

"Many of us are saddened and outraged . . .It reeks of racism, highly inconsiderate and totally unacceptable," he said.

"What's worse was that the statement was made at a JASA function on 1Malaysia."

Ong feels that "racism and bigotry are distractions that will hamper our genuine efforts to develop the economic and social well-being of the country."

He also said that it would hamper the government's transformation programme (GTP) which aims to enhance inter-ethnic harmony.

"Malaysia belongs to all races including the Malays, Chinese, Indians, Kadazans, Ibans and all other indigenous groups. It does not belong to any particular single race," he said. - Malaysian Mirror
