KUALA LUMPUR - A MCA central committee member has lashed out at the party’s youth chief Wee Ka Siong for reportedly asking Umno to intervene in the ongoing leadership crisis.

Eng Hiap Boon, who is also Penang state deputy chairman, said that while Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, as BN chairman had the prerogative to offer his help to solve the party’s problems, he could not understand why the youth wing was “so eager to ask for outside help.”

In statement to the media, Eng said that the youth wing was traditionally known to be the party vanguard and would “vehemently oppose” outside meddling in internal matters.

“I read with disgust media reports that the MCA National Youth chief has requested Umno to intervene in MCA's ongoing leadership impasse. What I cannot stomach is why the chief of the youth wing, which is supposed to be the vanguard of the party, is so eager to ask outsiders to interfere.”

He said that in the past, the youth wing would be against interference from outsiders because “we are confident party leaders have the wisdom to put its own house in order.”

“The youth wing would want to uphold the image and dignity of MCA leaders. Historically, we did not want the Chinese community to pass snide remarks about the MCA.”

Eng also said that the current MCA Youth chief owes the movement an explanation as to why “he is so hard up” for outsiders to get involved now.

Twisted logic in play

“Has he lost faith in the wisdom of top MCA leaders, of which he is also part of? I hope his insistence is not based on his own twisted assumption and logic that he would stand to be promoted politically when outsiders tell us how we to run our party,” said Eng.

He said that if the party allows outside interference, the youth wing would be hard pressed to face a “hostile Chinese community that was accusing the MCA of having no backbone or being under the thumb of others ” in resolving party matters.

“I am sure a man of his stature and wisdom would not want to sacrifice the Party nor the Youth wing just so his lofty ambitions can be realised. I am sure he realises that there is too much at stake for MCA, especially in the run-up to the 13th general election, than to dice with racial fury now,” said Eng.

Eng however, thanked the prime minister for his deep concern and offer to help party, which is the second largest component in the BN coalition.

Eng said that as far as the grassroots are concerned, now is not the time yet for outsiders to interfere and doing so will greatly complicate things in the long-run.
