Wee: MCA leaders must unite to make fresh polls a reality

KUALA LUMPUR: Embracing a foe as a friend may be the best option for MCA's two warring factions to end the long-standing leadership crisis in the party. MCA Youth chief Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong said party president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat and his deputy, Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek, should join hands with vice-president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai to make fresh elections a reality.

Wee, who is a supporter of Liow, said his side already had 13 out of the 21 resignations from elected central committee (CC) members needed to get party polls going.

He said eight more CC members must quit to enable the party to hold elections and that Dr Chua could convince other CC members to join in.

"He (Ong) made no mention of interest in reelection. So perhaps Liow and Dr Chua can sit down and make up the numbers," he said.

Wee insisted that this was in no way a move to topple Ong, saying it was the only way to resolve the stalemate.

Ong, Dr Chua and Liow agree that fresh elections may be the best way forward but disagree on when it should be held and who it should involve.

Wee was clarifying a posting by blogger Lim Fang who claimed that Wee had proposed the Liow-Dr Chua alliance to topple Ong.

Lim Fang claimed that Wee had told him at a New Year lunch meeting that as Ong had given no clue to his stand on fresh party polls, it only made sense to get Liow and Dr Chua to work together.

He added that Wee had no qualms about supporting Dr Chua if the latter were to be elected as president because Dr Chua was a "seasoned politician with the political wisdom and strategy to cure the party crisis".

Wee said Lim Fang's posting was not entirely accurate, but acknowledged that he was willing to give his "fullest support" to Dr Chua to become president, provided that his rise followed proper election procedures.
