Why Ong must not step down

LETTER I am writing in reference to the extraordinary outcome in the MCA extraordinary general meeting on Saturday. I am shocked that MCA delegates has decided to punish its president Ong Tee Keat and Dr Chua Soi Lek.

I can understand the delegates' rejection of Chua as their deputy president, having been dogged with the video sex scandal. But I cannot fathom why the party snubbed Ong, who is also transport minister.

For once, I though MCA and Barisan Nasional had a decent leader who had what it takes to turn the flagging ruling coalition around in time for the next general election. Ong had burnished his image as a forthright leader who spoke up fearlessly. He had criticised the excessive amount paid for the renovations of two Chinese primary schools in Johor a few years back. Ong had also spoken up on the unfair allocation of places for admission into local public universities.

His forthrightness earned him two reprimands from the Cabinet.

But all these pales in comparison with his efforts to uncover the mess in the country's largest financial scandal - the Port Klang Free Zone fiasco.

It must certainly amount to something for a person who had the guts to open up a can of worms in a project where powerful politicians have vested interest in. In other words, Ong has been trying to move away from the pre-March 8 way of doing things and this would help BN regain lost ground in time for the next general election.

According to a survey by the Merdeka Centre conducted between Sept 29 to Oct 4, the PKFZ scandal is one issue most people (25 per cent) think BN can showcase its seriousness to combat graft. It's perplexing why his own delegates can reject him on an issue most Malaysians think Ong has struck the right chord.

In any case, Ong was defeated in the EGM by a mere 14 votes - a swing of eight votes and the outcome would be otherwise.

Whatever it is, democratic processes have taken place in the MCA and must be respected.

Be that as it may, the delegates' voice is not supreme. If it were, the MIC would have changed its president long ago and Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak would not have launched the new Indian party, Makkal Sakthi on Saturday. Ong may have lost the no-confidence motion by a waffle-thin majority, but in the court of public opinion, he's still on top.

Based on the same Merdeka Centre report, 25 per cent of the respondents feel that Ong should continue leading the MCA. He is the only leader who garnered a double-digit percentile score. The people think highy of him for the brave man that he is.

At a time when BN and MCA are at its lowest ebb, a man of honour and integrity has stood out among the rest. Ong is someone Malaysians of all races can relate to, chiefly, but not entirely due to his efforts in uncovering PKFZ.

For the sake of Malaysians, Tee Keat, please don't go.

For the sake of BN, please do not let this man go.

Susan Long Chi Huey,
Kampar

  3. Count me in. OTK is one of the rarest of his kind. He has been working unselfishly and consistently trying to reengineer and reenergise the pary. It's our turn to show our appreciation by standing up and to be counted for the petition to support him. Spread the message.

  4. Count me in. Good effort Susan. Inorder to optimise the impact you need to translate into Chinese to cater for them. OTK has been victimized. His unselfish contribution should not be in vain. WE SHALL STAND UP AND BE COUNTED.

  7. Susan Long is just a busybody type of people, trying meddling into party affairs which she has very little knowledge. There is no need to pursuade OTK to stay back unless Susan has something else to gain personally. The reason is very simple; OTK has made a public declaration to quit if more than half of the CDs disagree with his leadership. Now the matter is no longer a constitutional issue, but more of his ability to fulfill his own promise. There is no other issue involved here, please do not complicate the matter. If OTK is a man of his own words, then please submit resignation immediately. Otherwise he can choose to stay on. I am not pushing for OTK to resign but compelling him to do what he had promise only.

DO NOT senationalise THE whole issue AS IF THE WORLD WOULD COME TO AN END WITHOUT OTK. NOBODY IS INDISPENSABLE, NOT CSL, NOT OTK, NOBODY.

  8. Who are you to ask OTK to submit his resignation ? Mr anonymous 10:04 am or Mr nobody ? You are just a small fart in MCA !

  10. for the same principles, who is Susan Long to ask OTK to swallow his own words. If not mistaken, Susan already know OTK is sure to resign, nobody including the PM is going to pursuade him to stay on. Susan is just another opposition operatives playing double tongue, digging out the PKFZ issue in order to paint a bad picture that BN is corrupted, that's why the rakyat shuold vote against it. THIS SMALL LITTLE PLAY ONLY.GIVE SUSAN A CHANCE TO VOTE IN THE NEXT GE, SHE WILL VOTE FOR PR PARTIES. BUT ON PKFZ SHE PLAYS THE INNOCENT ROLE, NON-PARTISAN, FIGHT FOR ANTI-CORRUTION, DISTURBS WHATEVER MOVE BN WANTS TO DO, PAY LITTLE ATTENTION TO BN PARTIES, ONLY INTERESTED TO M,EDDLE INTO BN PARTIES WHEN THEY ARE IN DEEP TROUBLE. SUSAN LONG PROPOSAL WILL NOT HELP TO SOLVE THE ON-GOING POWER PLAY IN MCA. SHE PRTENDS TO HELP, IF MCA PEOPLE BELIEVES HER, MCA WILL BE SPLIT FURTHER DOWN THE MIDDLE. MAY BE CANNOT RETURN ANYMORE.

  11. Those who ask OTK to resign are either those will be benefitted with his resignation.

We ask him to stay on to minimise more in-fighting.

  12. WHAT MINIMISE ? IT IS OTK WHO STARTED THE IN-FIGHTING FROM DAY ONE AFTER LAST ELECTION ON 18/10/2008. TODAY IS 13/10/2009, 5 DAYS SHORT OF ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY. OTK IS BORN IN 1956, ALREADY 56 YEARS OLD, STILL BEHAVE LIKE A FIGHTING COCK, WHAT THE HELL IS THIS ? HE IS GOING TYO BE A GRANDFATHER VERY SOON, YOU KNOW THE DAUGHTER GOT MARRIED RECENTLY.

HE IS NOT SUITABLE TO LEAD ANY PARTY. NCA HAS CREATED ON MONSTER, AND GOT RID OF IT FAST ENOUGH.

You are very illogical and quarrelsome. A party must be run according to its Constitution. Refer to Article 35 of the Constitution. Two third majority is needed to oust the party officials. It is formulated such to allow the party to function smoothly to deter anyone from creating havoc in the party. DO NOT SET PRECEDENCE. OUR CONSCIENCE MUST BE VERY CLEAR. Stand up to protect the sacredness of the CONSTITUTION detering the party from be ruined by some shadowy people or central delegates.
The party will be very weak if a simple majority can oust a president. EGM should only be called to oust him if assured the resolution have the support of two third majority. I am very sad that Senior Party members are so ignorant of the constitution.

Ps. We are here not to quarrel but to put forward our thoughts. No body should feel offended if he thinks otherwise.

  15. we are talking about the president making an open declaration to quit even if no confidence resolution is passed by simple majoirty. we are not talking about constitutional issue. throw away the constitution for the moment. we want the president to honour his own words, not say one thing do another. it is as simple as that. you turn around and argue about two third majority, fine, i agree but are you saying that the president can fool around with different stand taken b4 and after the egm ? are you ok mentally to support this type of president ?

  16. Once you throw away the party constitution then you have to keep on throwing away the party constitution forever. It will face deregistration and the demise of the party.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Throwing away the Party Constitution is like throwing away our Federal Constitution . Does that mean UMNO can also do as they like while the constitution becomes a piece of paper with no value ?

The Federal Constitution is there to safeguard the rights of all the citizens of this country , be they Malays , Chinese , Indians or other races .
Similarly the Party Constitution is there to safeguard the rights of all its members and not to be HIJACK by a few nincompoops to the benefit of their vested interests .

The party constitution needs to be adhered to .

we want the president to honour his own words, not say one thing do another. it is as simple as that.

The President has not said anything yet to that effect . You are already jumping into conclusions . Since when did the President fool around with his stand ? Are you putting words into the President's mouth ?

We are here giving our opinion that the President should not resign . Period ! This message is also meant for the Central Committee and those with vested interests .

Do you have any objection if the Presidents Resignation is NOT ACCEPTED by the CC ?And decides to remain as President until a certain time before he steps down ?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Well said. Nobody should trample with the constitution. If they feel Article 35 is not suitable then amend it through the AGM or EGM. As it is Article 35 triumph over whatever the cc say. Doing otherwise contravene the Constitution and has legal implication. OTK is still the President constitutionally and do not have to resign. It a non issue.

  20. THE PRESIDENT OTK HAVE SAID CLEARLY IN AN INTERVIEW WITH THE STAR ONE WEEK B4 EGM THAT HE WILL TENDER HIS RESIGNATION IF RESOLUTION (1) CANNOT GO THROU. THAT INTERVIEW WAS ARRANGED TO STRENGTHEN HIS POSITION IN FACE OF EGM ATTACK. DO NOT PRETEND THAT YOU HAVE NOT READ THE INTERVIEW. FOR ALL THOSE ENGLISH-ED MEMBERS, THE STAR IS THE GREATEST SOURCE OF INFO ON MCA AFFAIRS. DO NOT PRETEND IN THIS BLOG, YOU ARE ACTUALLY THE PO LAN PA, NO PROPER STAND, SOME MORE WHAT TO TALK ABOUT POLITICS.

NOBODY IS AT FAULT, IF OTK HAS NOT SAID ANYTHING ON RESIGNATION, THEN I WOULD SUPPORT HIM TO STAY ON. HE GOT TO BLAME HIMSELF FOR JUMPING THE GUN. ONCE AGAIN, HE IS 53 YEARS OLD, HOW MANY 53 YEARS A PERSON CAN ENJOY IN HIS NATURAL LIFE ? STILL NOT MATURED ENOUGH TO DECIDE, OR HE SAID THAT JUST TO CON THE DELEGATES ? YOU WANT TO PROTECT HIM, ON WHAT GROUND, ON MORAL AGAIN ?

DO NOT DO THE PLP=PO LAN PA TYPE OF POLITICS, PEOPLE DONT LIKE PLP POLITICIAN NOWADAYS.
