Ong Need Not Step Down

Ong need not step down even if no-confidence vote is passed

Tan Chai Ho

PETALING JAYA (Sept 15, 2009) : MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat need not step down even if a resolution calling for a vote of no-confidence against him is passed by delegates attending the party's upcoming extraordinary general meeting (EGM).

MCA central delegates EGM action committee chief coordinator Datuk Seri Tan Chai Ho said under the party constitution, Ong does not have to quit his post because all it (the passing of the resolution) means is that the central delegates have no confidence in his leadership.

"It is his (Ong's) right whether he wants to step down or not if the vote is passed," Tan said in an interview with Sin Chew Daily today.

He also dismissed talk that the action committee wants to topple Ong, reinstate expelled deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek and make him the acting president.

Asked whether a vote of no-confidence against Ong would mean that the president has to resign, MCA secretary-general Datuk Wong Foon Meng also said "no".

Meanwhile, China Press, quoting grassroots sources, reported that the central delegates meeting scheduled for Oct 11 may be postponed because of the upcoming EGM. On Monday, both warring factions came to an agreement to hold one EGM where the five draft resolutions from Chua's camp will be tabled. The notice for the EGM will be sent out today and it is expected to be held after Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

Many grassroots leaders in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur contacted by China Press hailed the decision of the two warring factions to agree to holding only one EGM.

The daily also said the action committee had set four conditions for the holding of the EGM i.e. no bomb hoax; no throwing of chairs (as happened at the MCA Youth central delegates meeting in 2001); no whistling; and no display of banners at the venue.

Najib: EGM decisions ultimate
by Charles Ramendran

KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 11, 2009) :
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak says decisions taken at an extraordinary general meeting (EGM), the highest authority of any political structure, should be adhered to.

In yesterday's MCA EGM, central delegates adopted a motion declaring no confidence in party president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat by 14 votes. They also rejected by 74 votes a motion to restore Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek as deputy president. However, the delegates adopted a resolution to annul the party's decision to expel and subsequently suspend Chua's membership.

EGM decisions ultimate ??

Looks like PM is unaware that the MCA party's constitution is Supreme and provides for the fact that two thirds majority is needed to REMOVE a sitting president .
I hope UMNO can keep its comments to themselves and not interfere with MCA internal politics as there is no guarantee that any stand in president will not be subjected to new rounds of internal bickering since their power base is still questionable .

Or is it that UMNO wants to shut up the PKFZ issue and wanting OTK to leave ?
Is is a known fact that many BN MPs are involved and it doesn't help by removing OTK , it will only make it worse and give more ammunition to the Opposition to fire .

More devils are being exposed and more opportunists and rats are coming out of their rat holes .

  1. I suggest CC meets the PM to discuss and talk things over. No point both MCA and UMNO pour beans out in the media with no collaboration and discussion.

If CC things Tee Keat should stay, tell Najib why and what are the plans to steer MCA ahead.

It wont do MCA or UMNO any good if they confront each other on Tee Keat's issue. Of course, some of us hold back from slamming UMNO by their own arguments on Tee Keat's case. One must not forget the cases of Perak and Terengganu.

Constitutionally, both Perak and Terengganu stay in today's status quo. So can Tee Keat with the same arguments.

Again, it will do no good to both parties if they confront each other.

Sad day indeed for MCA politics. More and more youths are shying away from MCA and have preferences for DAP and PKR. There is no need to even go into details of the opinions, thoughts and support of the educated Chinese. segment.

  2. Dear All,

OTK does not have to step down, as mentioned in the MCA constituition, it needs 2/3 total votes to pass the motion.

As for OTK ever mentioned that he will not be happy with thin majority, I think OTK should not leave for the sake of Chinese community and Malaysia at large. My foreigner friend ever told me, even a 40% support is consider very good in oversea. Have u seen even Obama getting this type of support??!!

OTK has done a good job as President or Minister. It takes time to carry out reforms. You see even 1Malaysia, until todate, many people still do not understand, let alone see actions and even results.

It may take years. What you see for short term is the milestone achievements.

OTK should stay on as there is not one currently in MCA can take the lead and even force to lead it will not be without problems - more in-fighting.

OTK should stya on and change a little bit of his style - to be a little flexible without compromising his principles.

  4. Monk,

Use your head (if you have any brain inside it) before you write any comment. Don't use degrading words on the central delegates if you cannot provide any proof. Please name the delegates who had taken money and would 'sell their mothers for $$$$'. As the saying goes 'It takes a thief to catch a thief.'so you must be very experienced in this sort of thing.Speak through the orifice at the top, not the one at the bottom.

  6. MCA IS A COALITION WITHIN BN, WHAT'S WRONG FOR MCA LEADER TO GO CLOSE TO UMNO LEADER, ESPECIALLY THE PM HIMSELF ? THERE IS NOTHING WRONG, DO NOT ALWAYS ACCUSE UMNO OF DOING THIS AND THAT, JUST LIKE THE WAY WE DO NOT WANT OTHERS TO BLAME US.

NETIZENS IN THIS COUNTRY HAS BECOME SO ANTI-UMNO AND ANTI-GOVERNMENT, THEY WOULD TAKE ALWAYS PUT THE BLAME ON UMNO. THESE ARE THE PEOPLE WHO ACTUALLY WANTED TO HELP PR PARTIES BUT PRETENDING TO BE FRIENDS OF MCA. COME THE ELECTION TIME THEY WILL TELL MCA CANDIDATE" WE LIKE YOU BUT WE CANNOT VOTE FOR YOU BECAUSE YOU WORK WITH UMNO",

WHY TARGET ONLY UMNO BECAUSE UMNO CONTROL THE MAJOR POLITICAL BASES WITH 70 PARLIMENTARY SEATS. IN ORDER TO TOPPLE THE GOVRNMENT, THESE PEOPLE MUST HELP PR TO DARKEN UMNO. OTRHERWISE THEY CANNOT SUCCEED. MCA MEMBERS MUST NOT BE FOOLED BY THESE NETIZENS WHO PRETEND TO SYMPATHISE WITH NON-UMNO BN PARTIES, BUT THEIR REAL INTENTION IS BREAK UP THE BACKBONE BN SLOWLY, PAVING THE WAY FOR PKR PAS AND DAP TO GRAB POWER.

MCA MEMBERS AND LEADERS SHOULD NOT FALL INTO THIS TRAP. THESE AGITATOR HAVE POLITICAL AGENDA BUT THEY WRITE IN THE NAME OF FREE-LANCE WRITERS, WHO CARES FOR THE COMMUNITY. THE WILL BREAK UP BN SLOWLY BY TALKING DIFFERENTLY AND AGITATING COMPONENTS PARTY TO FIGHT WITH UMNO. IN THE END UMNO COLLAPSE, MCA, GERAKAN AND MIC ALSO DISINTEGRATE. AS SIMPLE AS THAT.

  8. Armo wants OTK to go off so that they can quietly sweep PKFZ underneath the carpet . OTK has been proven to be too great a threat to Armo cause many armo dogs have been receiving dogfood from the Sarawakian chimpanzee .

  9. Monk,

You did not see the cash changing hands, right? What I think really happened was a client was paying the pimp. The calls were made by call-girls who were going to service their clients. The talk was between the client who was complimenting the voluptuous call-girl and the call-girl who thanked him profusely while showing more tempting poses. Then the client said to the call-girl, 'You know what to do.' Then the call-girl said, 'OK'. And then silence. Or, you must have been lying on the bed waiting for your turn which you had hoped would be a handout. But that was not to be and you must have been very disappointed. So you concoct the story.

  11. The biggest winner here is non other than UMNO/Najib. A weaker MCA or MIC is good for the BN coalition. Don't you think so?
But the 2300 monkeys that voted who's in or out, do not represent the rest of MCA members or Chinese community in this country, please be clear. Those monkeys represent $$$$.

  12. A partner in a coalition should have equal standing. MCA should stand equally to UMNO, why should the outcome of a MCA EGM got to do with NAjib?

MCA must be run according to its Constitution. Refer to Article 35 of the Constitution. Two third majority is needed to oust the party officials. It is formulated such to allow the party to function smoothly to deter anyone from creating havoc in the party. DO NOT SET PRECEDENCE. OUR CONSCIENCE MUST BE VERY CLEAR. Stand up to protect the sacredness of the CONSTITUTION detering the party from be ruined by some shadowy people or central delegates.
The party will be very weak if a simple majority can oust a president. EGM should only be called to oust him if assured the resolution have the support of two third majority. I am very sad that Senior Party members are so ignorant of the constitution.
