MCA's King Kong 'slams' Dr M for saying Umno still needs Perkasa

Mahathir is Perkasa's patron

In a move that pundits say was a little too little and a bit too late, MCA leaders slammed former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad for urging Umno not to abandon ultra-Malay rights group Perkasa.

“If MCA wants to be believed, it should have insisted on Umno reining in Perkasa long ago and not wait until now. As it is, MCA is only following orders from Umno, maybe because Prime Minister Najib Razak doesn’t find it convenient to directly hit back at Mahathir, who is after all Umno’s former president,” PKR vice president Lee Boon Chye told Malaysia Chronicle.

“If MCA is really serious, it should also issue a warning to Umno and Utusan that if it continues to insult the minorities, MCA will leave the BN. Now, that would be real action and not just piping up for Umno and hitting at Mahathir because Najib doesn’t want to do it himself.”

Kong hits out at unnamed "prominent public figure"

Kong Cho Ha
On Monday, MCA secretary-general Kong Cho Ha attacked “a prominent public figure” for saying that Umno risked losing Malay support if it cut its ties with Perkasa.

“We regret to read the remarks by a prominent public figure who claims that Umno needs backing from Perkasa if it does not want to risk BN losing support,” Kong said in a statement.

“BN does not consist of only one political party, but is an alliance which comprises various political parties representing all the ethnic groups in Malaysia. Hence, BN thrives on the support rendered by every race, not only from the Malays.”

Although Kong did not name Mahathir, it is clear he was referring to the feisty former premier, who ruled Malaysian from 1981 to 2003. Mahathir was only prominent leader who had spoken up for Perkasa after Umno secretary-general Tengku Adnan announced last week that Umno would not support Perkasa or its chief Ibrahim Ali.

Several Cabinet minister cheered the decision and Minister in the PM’s Department Nazri Aziz even called Mahathir and Ibrahim “has-beens”.

Rejecting Perkasa won't make Umno any less racist

However, Najib has kept a conspicuous silence, while his deputy Muhyiddin Yassin has avoided any direct comment on the Umno-Perkasa row.

Umno - accused of racist, religious bigotry
Few Malaysians believe that Umno, which has ruled Malaysia since 1957 based on a divide-and-rule policy, can really forego its racist and religious tactics to rally Malay support. Pundits warned of a “sandiwara” or a staged drama to get non-Malay sympathy in the run-up to the Sarawak state election.

They point to the Umno-owned Utusan newspaper, which even today still carried editorials supporting Perkasa although its top editors were hand-picked by Najib.

"It is Umno which is the originator of the racist and religious rhetoric. Getting rid of Perkasa won't solve the problem. Even now, Najib doesn't dare to publicly say all races are equal in Malaysia. Let him say it first before we even waste our time giving him the benefit of doubt," PKR strategic director Tian Chua told Malaysia Chronicle.
