Rosmah: An asset to master Chinese language

BEIJING, June 14 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak wants Malaysian students in China to study hard and maintain the good name of the country so that they can contribute to nation building and help strengthen Sino-Malaysian friendship when they graduate.The message was conveyed to the students by Najib’s wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, during her visit to the Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU) here today.

Rosmah (picture) was accompanied by her youngest son, Nor Azman, who is here to pursue a three-week Chinese language course at the BFSU during his summer holidays.

Nor Azman is now undergoing a two-year Chinese language course at Georgetown University in Washington.

“It is the PM’s hope that Azman will brush up his conversation skill and writing skill during his stay in the BFSU.” said Rosmah, who introduced Nor Azman to the Chinese students studying the Malay language and Malaysian students studying the Chinese language at the universitry.

There are 116 Malaysian students, mainly from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), studying the Chinese language in the BFSU, and 40 Chinese students studying the Malay language.

Rosmah stressed the importance of mastering a language, especially in the globalised age.

She said mastering the Chinese language was an important asset as China was expected to play an important part globally and in the region.

“As China has risen to become the economic powerhouse of Asia, the Chinese language is becoming more important in the region.”

Malaysian students should respect the culture, ideology and way of life of Chinese society, she said, adding that they were here not only to gain knowledge but also to act as little ambassadors in fostering the friendship between the two countries. — Bernama
