PAS slams Mahathir for deriding Chinese

By FMT Staff

KUALA LUMPUR: PAS today poured scorn on former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s claims that the party was using gambling as a political issue and that the Chinese were habitual gamblers.

Said PAS information chief Idris Ahmad: “It's disappointing to hear him (Mahathir) accuse us of such shallowness. It’s not just football betting that we are against. PAS is against all forms of gambling.

“This is a matter of national concern and we are not using it as a political issue as alleged by Mahathir.”

He said PAS was different from Umno in that despite in power for 12 terms, Umno had not managed to abolish gambling.

“We’ve managed to do so much in Kelantan. We have successfully closed gambling outlets in Kelantan; Kedah is curbing gambling activities in stages; and Pakatan Rakyat-led Selangor and Penang are also acting against the vice.

“We are committed and serious about abolishing gambling and helping people free themselves from this vice,” he said, adding that people now knew that gambling licences were issued by the federal government and not state administrations.

Prejudiced Mahathir

Idris said PAS also took offence to Mahathir’s comments deriding the Chinese community at the “Rise Malays” (Melayu Bangkit) gathering in Kuala Terengganu yesterday.

He said PAS was disgusted at Mahathir’s racist perspective and his prejudice against the Chinese community.

“He went to the gathering in Terengganu and slandered the Chinese with his humiliating comments. He created a negative image of the community by accusing them of being gamblers and loving gambling.

“It’s an unfair statement and very deriding,” he said.

Let's vote for PAS !

  1. J4,

If MCA is a disillusioned and unavoidably going to hell in a handbasket I'm with you.

I'll vote for PAS too. What choice do we have!

  2. I rather give my vote to PAS than MCA, if I have to make a choice. MCA has not done anything to earn my vote.
