Guan Eng and wife voted out of Malacca DAP committee

The Star, Dec. 19, 2005

MALACCA: Party secretary-general Lim Guan Eng and his assemblywoman wife Betty Chew were dealt a severe blow when they were unexpectedly voted out of the Malacca DAP committee.

While the reasons for the shocking and unprecedented outcome are not very clear, party insiders say it could be the culmination of “years” of rivalry between former state chief Sim Tong Him and Lim whose political differences were open secrets.

One leader said this could also have been a signal of protest from supporters of former DAP secretary-general Kerk Kim Hock, who lost the party’s stronghold of Kota Melaka in the 2004 general election.

The purported feud between Kerk and Lim had been partly attributed to the defeat. “The result only goes to show that Malacca DAP is deeply split and also that the influence of Kerk and Sim is still there,” he said.

He added the result would have an affect on DAP at the national level as Lim’s father, Kit Siang, is a party strongman.

Bandar Hilir state assemblyman Goh Leong San is the new state chairman, taking over from his mentor and Lim’s adversary Sim Tong Him, who stepped down without contesting after holding the post for 15 years.

In the state election yesterday, Goh secured 83 votes, the highest polled by the 17 people vying for one of 15 elected places in the state committee.

Lim and Chew, who is Kota Laksamana assemblywoman, garnered 27 and 33 votes respectively, putting them at the bottom of the lot.

Under the party constitution, Lim, as secretary-general, is automatically included in the state committee. Chew, who is state Wanita chief, does not qualify for automatic inclusion.

When contacted, Lim said he supported Goh but declined to comment on the results. “Goh is the best person to ask,” he said. Goh described the election as “simple and straightforward” but declined to comment on Lim’s situation.

Sim said he did not contest so as to make way for younger leaders. He was later appointed to the state committee. A total of 91 party members attended the DAP state annual general meeting and election yesterday.

When contacted by The Star at around 9.30pm last night, DAP life adviser Dr Chen Man Hin said: “You are the first one to tell me about this. No comments until I see the results.”Yet he is appointed as DAP Secretary General.

  1. J4,

this state committee is formed via election?? which is different from MCA, right?? Meaning DAP is more democratic than MCA.

also it reminds me that CSL did a poll in his blog that all state appoitment, even the state liaison chairman shall be via election and not appointment. What happen to his words?? Eat back?? He reneged it??!!

    Bikin tak serupa cakap.

  2. It is OK for Melaka to reject them. They are welcome in Penang. That is good enough.

  3. Do you think MCA leaders would dare to have open party election?

They would keep to the election via CDs.

The CDS are human shaped spirit who serves for witchery, a demon, or other evil magician-related subjects such as MCA election.

The MCA leaders feed them. When the time come, these evil spirits are collected and trucked to KL to cast their votes for their masters.

MCA is all about black magic.

  4. I know a number of Penang DAP leaders, who toil to hole the DAP flag up when DAP was down and out. During those difficult time you hardly see Lim Guan Eng in Penang and his father have cursed and abandon Penang. It was left to a few local leaders to struggle out, I salute these people for their endurance and they deserve to lead Penang and not Lim Guan Eng and his gang.....who conveniently come here when the time was right to stand in a safe seat at the expense of the local leaders....tell me where is his integrity and principle. Worse still he screw up Penang....

Surely KTK have his weakness, but it a fact that during his tenure, Penang people are better off than now, economy are better and the people have better job opportunity. Lim Guan Eng did what?...until today he is not able to come out with a blue print of how to make Penang progress....What ever people say about KTK as least he is a gentleman and approachable...he knows he gonna get form us still he is willing to meet us.... not like Lim Guan Eng so cocky and not approachable, either he is scare or no time to meet the people thats why he is building the Speaker's Square in Esplanade for people to shout there like madman.....

Yes, Lim Guan Eng go to jail because he said something stupid and caught with his pants down...

  11. Wisdom,

How do you know that LGE and PR did not come up with a blue print. If you do not know, pls do not say that.

As for your claim that KTK is a gentleman, ok. we do not deny that but politics is not about popularity. Get it.

If LGE has to meet you and make you feel important, than I will whack LGE for wasting his time. He can not be like abang Ajib, meeting a school drop-out for scholarship. Pls do not be a cry baby here.

Pls ask the penang people about ROCKET and PR....all give thumbs-up. I am from Penang by the way.

If you like to whck - pls whack PERKASA good and proper.... but do not just whack in the "Internet".

If you think LGE and PR are no good, I can assure you. They will rule Penang for many years to come.
