Cops to probe Guan Eng for saying Beng Hock was murdered

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 24 — The police have initiated a sedition investigation against Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng for suggesting Teoh Beng Hock was murdered, in a move that will fuel the controversy surrounding the DAP aide's death.

Selangor police chief Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar said today that Lim (picture), the DAP secretary-general, was not facing immediate arrest, but would have his statement recorded.

Khalid said Lim was being investigated over his speech made at the inaugural Pakatan Rakyat (PR) convention last Saturday in Shah Alam.

Selangor police lodged a police report over Lim's speech on Monday. In his speech, Lim had said that "Teoh Beng Hock had been cruelly murdered. I want to remind those responsible that we will not forget you because there is no forgiveness for you."

Khalid said today that no one should make unsubstantiated remarks. "Lim Guan Eng's remarks can be considered to be an incitement, causing the public to believe that Teoh Beng Hock had been murdered."

MACC officers lodge police reports over Suara Keadilan article on Teoh

SHAH ALAM, Jan 1 – Two officers of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) today lodged police reports against the “Suara Keadilan” tabloid newspaper and pathologist Dr Pornthip Rojanasunand of Thailand over an article which confirmed as murder the death of Selangor political aide Teoh Beng Hock who had been questioned by the MACC.

The officers, Hisham Mohd Yusoff, 30, and Raub Ghani, 41, of the Putrajaya MACC investigation branch, made the reports at about 10.30am at the Shah Alam district police headquarters here.

Hisham said in his report that he read the article in the newspaper, dated Dec 29 2009 to Jan 5 2010, yesterday and found that the article concluded that Teoh, a political aide to a Selangor state executive councillor, had been murdered.

PENANG - The DAP took to task the Malaysian Anti-Corrup-tion Commission (MACC) for lodging a police report against Thai pathologist Dr Pornthip Rojanasunand. Its secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said this was the first time in Malaysian history that accusations had been made against a pathologist for carrying out his or her duties, reported Bernama. "I am surprised to find out that the MACC is lodging a police report against Dr Pornthip who is just here to work for the truth," he told reporters after launching the "No Plastic Bags on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday" campaign at Komtar here on Saturday. Putting pressure on Dr Pornthip Yesterday, two MACC officers lodged police reports at the Shah Alam district police headquarters against the Suara Keadilan tabloid and Dr Pornthip over an article in it which allegedly said the pathologist had confirmed murder was the cause of death of Selangor political aide Teoh Beng Hock, who had been questioned by the MACC. Lim added that the action by the MACC would be seen as an act to put pressure on the pathologist to cover up the truth.

Guan Eng blasts police over sedition threat

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 3 — DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng today hit out at the police for threatening him with sedition over his remarks suggesting that Teoh Beng Hock was murdered, saying it was a concerted effort to topple him as Penang Chief Minister and break up the Pakatan Rakyat.

Lim said police should stop persecuting innocent people, adding statements from senior police officials showed they have pre-judged him despite their denials of bias.

“The police seem to have made up their minds to charge me with sedition,” Lim told The Malaysian Insider in a phone interview from Penang.

The opposition leader has a previous conviction for sedition and publishing false news, serving 12 out of an 18-month sentence in 1998 for rape allegations made against former Malacca chief minister Tan Sri Rahim Thamby Chik.

The police started their investigations on Dec 21 over remarks by Lim and another politician on Teoh’s death made at the Pakatan Rakyat convention on Dec 19.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan said on Dec 30 that the police will not be biased in their probe.

Pornthip may pull out of Teoh's inquest

Counsel representing at the late DAP political aide Teoh Beng Hock's inquest fear that renowned Thai pathologist Dr Pornthip Rojanasunand might withdraw from the case following a police report lodged against her yesterday.

Speaking to reporters in Medan Damansara, legal representative for the Selangor government Malik Imtiaz Sawar also described the police report lodged by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Agency (MACC) yesterday as having "no proper basis".

Yesterday, two MACC officers filed police reports against the PKR organ Suara Keadilan and Pornthip respectively over an article which confirmed as murder the death of Teoh while being questioned by the MACC.

However, according to Malik, Pornthip has denied the accusation that she had leaked her the report on the second autopsy.

"The Suara Keadilan merely states that it is alleged that Pornthip will confirm her earlier position at the inquest.

"It does not in any way mention that Pornthip disclosed any information and in fact states that the source from which the information written of was not her," said Malik.

Because of this, he added, Pornthip "is currently considering her position" in the inquest which will resume on Jan 7, when she is expected to disclose her full report on the second autopsy.

Given the reports against her, the Thai pathologist is likely to be interrogated by the police on arrival in Malaysia.

"We have to understand of the two police reports, the one against Suara Keadilan is not what we are concerned with. If they feel that the paper has done anything wrong, that is their right.

"But to equate her with Suara Keadilan, that is what we are concerned about because the paper is a political party newspaper and Pornthip is a witness called by the state government to assist in the inquest.

"She has come voluntarily and not for money but to get at the truth... but now she has to face this sort of publicity generated by the police reports," said Malik.

Teoh's family lawyer, Gobind Singh Deo, who was also at the press conference, added that they would advise Pornthip about her position and how to approach the matter.

"On behalf of Teoh's family, I hope Pornthip will remain confident and hope that she will still come to Malaysia to assist us in the inquest... I hope at the end of the day, all these efforts would not go to waste," he said.
