SHAH ALAM - Several leaders have reacted with disbelief a police report by extremist Malay group Perkasa against a Protestant church in Shah Alam. In his police report, a local Perkasa leader Zainal Abidin Ahmad said the Grace Church in Shah Alam and its pastor Joseph Marcose had "insulted the Sultan of Selangor" for planning to stage a Christian play in the Muslim-majority city during the fasting month. Zainal said the play at Shah Alam Convention Centre (SACC), themed "There is Hope", which revolves around the country's independence and which was meant only for church-goers, was a deliberate attempt to propagate Christianity among Muslims. The church however said the play, scheduled for September 4, had already been cancelled due to absence of its members. Shah Alam member of parliament Khalid Samad blasted Perkasa for their "immaturity", saying its complaint to the police was irresponsible. “Perkasa have demonstrated once again that they are incapable of uniting the nation, (or) behaving maturely and responsibly,” twitted Khalid. Online portal The Malaysian Insider quoted Khalid as saying that the latest attempt was a ploy by Perkasa to whip up religious and racial tension in order to justify a crackdown against the opposition. “I fear it’s an overall strategy that BN is implementing now in the run up to the next general elections and it will culminate in another Operasi Lalang,” Khalid said. Meanwhile, Petaling Jaya Utara MP, Tony Pua chided Perkasa over the police report, saying the group had "gone mad". “I think Perkasa has gone mad, as they filed a police report against a Shah Alam church for organising a play during Ramadan!” said Pua. - Harakahdaily |
