Chor made full minister despite ‘role’ in PKFZ
KUALA LUMPUR, June 1 — Datuk Wira Chor Chee Heung was today named the Housing and Local Government Minister despite being among the politicians who came under fire during the Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ) saga.
A PricewaterhouseCooper (PwC) audit report, commissioned by the Port Klang Authority (PKA) and released last year, mentioned the involvement of several politicians and stated there might be some conflict of interest.
The Alor Star MP, who was PKA chairman from 2007-2008, had denied any wrongdoing and had said he accepted the post of chairman to do “national service”.
The current deputy finance minister, who recently secured a post as MCA vice-president during the party’s polls in March, this evening thanked the party leadership and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak for the appointment.
Chor (picture), who will now take over from party comrade Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha who held the portfolio, told The Malaysian Insider that his years of experience as a fifth-term MP and a deputy minister would help him carry out his duties efficiently.
He claimed he had not been informed of his appointment before today.
“I only heard about it through rumours in the press.
“However, I am thankful that my party has confidence in my capabilities. I will not disappoint the prime minister and the rakyat,” he said.
In July last year, he was summoned to appear before Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) which was probing the PKFZ project which was initially estimated to cost RM1.96 billion but ended up costing RM12.45 billion.
The PwC report mentioned that there could have possibly been a conflict of interest, since Chor was both non-executive deputy chairman of Wijaya Baru Global Bhd (WBGB) and chairman of PKA.
WBGB is linked to PKFZ’s main developer Kuala Dimensi Sdn Bhd (KDSB).
UMNO appointed him ? as reward for his role !
