1957: The Reid Commission drafted the Federal Constitution, and at the behest of one of the Commission members, Mr. Justice Abdul Hamid of West Pakistan High Court, Article 3 (1) was formulated as such: “Islam is the religion of the Federation …”

1966: Restrictions were placed on the employment, entry and residence of priests and religious personnel. This led to the reduction of religious personnel in mission schools.

1974: The Red Cross Society was re-named Red Crescent Society.

1974 to present: The airing of Islamic television and radio programmes began increasing. From 1974 onwards, prime time television programmes were paused to air the Azans [Muslim prayer]. In 1982 Islamic content on TV stood at 10 per cent; in 1988 it rose to 17.5 per cent.

In 2007, new station TV9 was launched, which features mainly Islamic programming. There is no coverage of non-Muslim religious programs, save for during the respective festivals.Songs that contain the word ‘Jesus’ have been banned [eg: “Jesus to a Child” by George Michael], as well as movies depicting prophets [eg: “Prince of Egypt”, a film about the life of Moses].

1979: The Islamic Revolution and revivalism in Iran had a direct effect on Muslims here. Muslim clerics began exhorting their faithful to return to the fundamentals of the faith. The Angkatan Budaya Islam Malaysia [Malaysian Islamic Cultural Force] (ABIM) led by Anwar Ibrahim started the dakwah [the call] movement mainly among government college and university students.Muslim women, for the first time, were seen donning the tudung [head covering]. Over the years, wearing of the tudung has become the norm amongst Muslim women.

1981: The Indonesian translation of the Bible – “Alkitab” was banned under the Internal Security Act. The ban was later lifted on condition the books were restricted to Christian use.

In 2000, the Bahasa Malaysia translation of “Alkitab” was confiscated by the Special Branch from the Daughters of St. Paul bookstore in Petaling Jaya. The then Deputy PM Abdullah Badawi later released the books on condition that the words “for Christians only” were printed on the cover.

1984: It became illegal for non-Muslims to use 49 ‘Islamic’ words including Allah [God], Alhamdulilah [Praise be to God] and Insya Allah [God willing].

1985: The then Deputy Prime Minister [PM] Datuk Musa Hitam said, “The government has set up a committee to co-ordinate the various aspects of Islamic Syariah and civil laws in line with efforts to infuse Islamic values into the Administration.” [New Straits Times (NST) 9 March ‘85]

Aug 1986: ABIM proposes to government that, “Islamic laws be the basis of legislation in Malaysia.” [NST 25 Aug ‘86]

Sep 1986: The Federal and State governments agreed to the integration of Syariah and Civil Courts. The then Lord President Tun Salleh Abas said this integration was a first step toward the Islamisation of laws in the country. He also said that changes should not be made drastically … the best changes are those which are imperceptible. [The Star 25 Sep ‘86].

The above situation led to a written protest by the Malaysian Consultative Council of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism and Sikhism [MCCBCHS], and a nationwide church and temple signature campaign denouncing the plans.

1988: The then Minister of Education Anwar Ibrahim, directed all Principals, aged fifty-five and above who were religious, to stop service with immediate effect. The Principals who took over were mostly Muslim.

Subsequently,

Moral Education replaced Christian religious education in these schools. The majority of Moral Education teachers were Muslim.
Crucifixes in mission schools were removed.
School history textbooks glorified Islam and Islamic civilisation over other religions.
“Islamic Civilisation” was introduced as a compulsory subject for all university students.

1988: Article 121 of the Federal Constitution was amended by Art. 121 (1A), to state that, the Civil Courts “shall have no jurisdiction in respect of any matter within the jurisdiction of the Syariah Courts.”

The result of this amendment led to the Civil Courts being unable to adjudicate in cases where the Islamic ingredient is present notwithstanding the fact the person seeking judicial relief or remedy is a non-Muslim, especially in matters related to conversion, matrimony, children’s custody and burial.

Over the years, case law has shown:

a person who converts to Islam can get his/her civil marriage dissolved by the Syariah court, automatically gains custody of children and is allowed to convert them without the non-Muslim parent’s consent [Subashini v Saravanan].
a person who converts out of Islam cannot change religious status on his/her Identity Card without permission from the Syariah Court [Lina Joy case].
a person who applies to the Syariah Court to convert away from Islam is forced into rehabilitative detention [Revathi Masoosai case ].
State Islamic authorities are given power by the Syariah Courts to claim, exhume and bury deceased persons who they deem as Muslims, regardless of the insistence of family members to the contrary [Moorthy Marian and Rayappan Anthony cases].

1980s: In line with Article 11 (4) of the Federal Constitution: “State and federal law may restrict the propagation of any other religious doctrine among Muslims”, the Control and Restriction of the Propagation of Non-Islamic Religions Enactment was passed in six states. The penalties for such violations are a maximum RM10,000 fine or one year’s jail, or both.

Five persons including a former Muslim were detained without trial under the ISA for allegedly performing missionary work amongst Muslims.

During the 80s the print media attempted to portray that Christian evangelism was a threat to the Muslim faith. As an example, on 9 Oct ’87, the NST reported that, “Christians attempted to convert Muslims with bribe money”. On 5 Oct ’87 Mingguan Islam alleged that US$100bil was provided by the “World Federation of Churches” for the Christianisation of Muslims. The Malaysian Consultative Council on Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism and Sikhism [MCCBCHS] asserted that both these stories were false. Furthermore, there is no such body as the “World Federation of Churches”.

1980s to present: Approvals for building of non-Muslim places of worship became increasingly difficult. Unusual conditions were imposed – height restrictions on steeples, design restrictions temple domes – Sikh gurdwaras are barred from building their traditional domes for fear that it may cause confusion for looking too mosque-like.

The Church of the Divine Mercy in Shah Alam took no less than 28 years to be approved and built due to vexatious bureaucratic delays and protests from residents.
To date, over 10 Hindu temples have been demolished by local councils on grounds that the structures were illegal.
1980s to present: Muslims by virtue of paying their tithes [zakat] are allowed a tax rebate of the amount tithed. This has resulted in Muslims having a lower effective tax rate, while non-Muslims with the same level of income are taxed a higher percentage.

1993: Banks and finance companies were allowed to offer Islamic banking services.

1993: Kelantan State Legislative Assembly, which is under the control of opposition Parti Islam SeMalaysia [PAS], passed the Syariah Criminal Code [II] Bill, which included Hudud laws that call for stoning to death and chopping of limbs – these laws could be applied to those from any religion. [As the Federal Government does not recognise these laws, to date, they have not yet been enforced.]

1999: The ruling Barisan Nasional [BN] party suffered its biggest setback in its history when apart from Kelantan, also lost the state of Terengganu to PAS in the General Elections.

PAS, with its vision of setting up a Syariah-based Islamic State, replaced the Democratic Action Party [DAP] as the main opposition party in Parliament.

This led to a race between the BN and PAS to try and ‘out-Islamise’ each other by posturing themselves to appear more ‘Islamic’.

2001: In an apparent attempt to thwart support for PAS’ plans of an Islamic State should it come into power, the then PM Mahathir Mohamed declared that Malaysia was already a “model Islamic Country”. Despite public outcry from the non-Muslim population, the non-Malay component parties within the ruling coalition were either compliant or silent on the issue.

2002: The policy “Absorption of Islamic Values” into government administration was launched. According to the booklet, “Malaysia is an Islamic Country”, the “policy will be implemented on a continuous basis until the goal of entrenching Islam into the nation’s system is fully achieved.” The booklet was later withdrawn but the policy is arguably still in force.

2004: PAS was ousted by the DAP as main opposition party in Parliament when it lost Terengganu to the BN and retained Kelantan by the narrowest of margins in the General Election. The BN, helmed by new PM Abdullah Badawi, experienced its biggest victory to date winning nine tenths of the contested Parliamentary seats.

Badawi then introduced the new concept of Islam Hadhari [Civilisational Islam].

2005: Plans to set up an Interfaith Commission, a statutory non-adjudicative body to assist the government in shaping coherent policy pertaining to religious harmony, were scuttled by widespread protests from Muslim activists who alleged the Commission would “interfere with the holiness of Islam”.

2005: City Hall enforcement officers arrested a non-Muslim couple for hugging and kissing in a public park. The couple appealed to the Federal Court, which ruled that City Hall was correct. The decision has now empowered local council authorities to act as morality police.

2006: An elderly American couple on holiday in Langkawi were harassed and humiliated by State religious enforcement officers who raided their apartment on suspicion they were Muslims committing khalwat [close proximity] – an offence under Syariah law.

2006: A coalition of non-governmental organisations [NGOs] formed “Article 11” [named after the constitutional provision which enshrines freedom of religion], with the intention of reminding the government to defend the Federal Constitution and reaffirm the country’s secular nature. Their nationwide fora were repeatedly disrupted by Islamist activists. The PM stepped in and assuaged the protestors by putting a halt “Article 11’s” activities.

2006: The Attorney General’s Chambers now has a Syariah unit whose functions, inter alia, are to “take steps toward the realisation of a set of laws and specific body that will be responsible for the harmonisation of civil law and syarak [laws of Islam]”.

This could be seen as a resumption of the 1985-1988 initiative towards the integration of Syariah and Civil Courts.

2007: Islamic authorities have been observed to have grown more tyrannical in their enforcement, as evidenced by the recent Revathi Masoosai case where they forcibly took away her child on the grounds that she was a Muslim who illegally practised Hinduism, despite her claim that she had been a practising Hindu since childhood.

A “Building Bridges” seminar of prominent Muslim and Christian scholars under the auspice of the Archbishop of Canterbury scheduled for 7-11 May 2007 was abruptly postponed by officials of the Prime Minister’s Department. No new date has been yet fixed.

July 17 2007: Deputy PM Najib Abdul Razak said Malaysia has never been a secular state as the government has always been driven by the fundamentals of Islam, according to state Bernama news agency.

PKR information chief Latheefa Koya has denied she had in any way coerced or influenced Rahimi Osman, a former aide of Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim, into signing two statutory declarations implicating Prime Minister Najib Razak and his wife Rosmah Mansor in fabricating sodomy charges against Anwar.

“Of course not, I categorically deny it,” Latheefa , a prominent human rights lawyer herself, told Malaysia Chronicle.

According to a police report lodged by Rahimi at the Klang police station this afternoon, he claimed that he was forced to sign two statutory declarations by Latheefa and other party members at Quality Hotel in June 2008.

“I was forced to sign two statutory declarations in June 2008 about Anwar and Saiful. The declaration was not true because I did not write it. I was forced to sign it because I feared for my safety. At that time there were hundreds of Anwar’s supporters and right-hand men around Quality Hotel,” Malaysian Insider reported Rahimi as saying.

The former aide also said that he was forced to stay at the hotel for a few days after signing the SD.

However, apart from Latheefa, Anwar's lawyer Sankara Nair also questioned why Rahimi suddenly changed his mind after three years.

“Why is he making an about- turn only now after about three years? This clearly smells sinister," said Sankara.

"Initially he is being listed as part of Anwar's defence witnesses. He voluntarily approached us to testify for us in the case. I emphatically wish to state that Rahimi was not forced to sign the statutory declarations. He made the SDs voluntarily and the SDs were in Anwar's favour.”

Something fishy going on

Rahimi had lodged the police report at around 3pm and had arranged to give a press conference at the Lotus restaurant at 4 pm.

However, the press conference was disrupted by a group of men who claimed to be PKR members. According to Malaysiakini, the group said they were “defending Anwar”.

There were about six people allegedly led by PKR vice-president aspirant K Sureshkumar and another man by the name of M Jayabalan.

"Call off the press conference. How much were you paid? We know what happened between you and Saiful," yelled M Jayabalan repeatedly.

Meanwhile, PKR officials are investigating the incident which appears to be aimed at discrediting not only Anwar but also the party itself.

“We don’t know anything about that all. If the group that disrupted the PC are really PKR members, we will have to probe why they behaved the way they did. A lot of strange things seem to be happening of late," Latheefa told Malaysia Chronicle.

"If they did do it for whatever reasons of their own, they will still have to be responsible for it. It is not the smartest thing to do and if they had checked with the party, we would have warned them against such behavior."

FULL REPORT KLANG: In a new twist to the Anwar Ibrahim sodomy saga, a former aide has claimed that he was forced to lie for the opposition leader in two statutory declarations made in 2008.

Rahimi Osman also filed a police report on the matter this afternoon.

In his report, the former aide said he was forced to ink the documents in June 2008 regarding Anwar and Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan.

"The SDs are untrue and was not written by myself," he said.

Rahimi claimed that he signed the documents because he feared for his safety at the time as he was surrounded by Anwar's supporters and his “right-hand men” in a hotel in Shah Alam.

"After Saiful made a police report saying he was sodomised by Anwar, Anwar's people as well as his laywers, including (PKR information chief) Latheefa Koya and Saiful Izham Ramli, forced me to stay at Quality Hotel," he said.

"They then forced me to put down my signature when I did not agree with the contents of the SDs at all," he added.

Rahimi stated that in his first SD signed on June 28, he had "accused" Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak and his wife Rosmah Mansor of conspiring against Anwar.

He made a new SD today, because he wanted to "tell the truth".

"A few months ago, Latheefa called me to ask me to sign a new SD as she told me the one I signed previously was lost. However, I did not entertain them and tried my best to stay away from them,” he said.

In his police report, Rahimi also asked for protection since he was most likely to be called in as a witness in the sodomy trial.

Meanwhile, Anwar's lawyer Sankara Nair denied Rahimi's claim of being forced to sign the SDs and questioned the timing of the latest revelation.

“He made the statutory declaration voluntarily and it was in Anwar's favour. By the way, why is he making an about turn now? After about three years?” he asked.

Mob storms restaurant

Rahimi's attempt to disclose the matter at a press conference in a restaurant here this evening was thwarted when a group of Anwar's supporters stormed the venue.

The men hurled abuses at Rahimi, and among others, shouted: “How many millions did you get?” and “We know everything”.

The men, led by PKR vice-presidential hopeful R Suresh Kumar, also threatened to forcefully drag Rahimi out of the restaurant if he did not end the press conference. He subsequently called off the press conference.

Speaking to reporters later, Suresh said he and his group came to protect Anwar from any false allegations.

"We don't know what he was going to expose but we know it's something bad. But he's the culprit. I know very well what he did to Saiful, I met his father also.

“Suddenly he comes out, definitely he got something from the government. So there's no story, there's nothing. Now the case is in court, why now? Who is Rahimi, why suddenly come out?" he asked.

Suresh also alleged that Rahimi and Saiful had a "special relationship" without elaborating.

Anwar was accused of sodomising Saiful in a condominium in Kuala Lumpur, and the opposition leader, who is facing his second sodomy charge in a decade, claimed that it was a sequel to the political conspiracy authored against him in 1998.

KLANG, Oct 6 — A former aide to Pakatan Rakyat (PR) defacto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim claimed today that he was forced to implicate Datuk Seri Najib Razak and Datin Seri Rosmah in the on-going Sodomy II trial.

Rahimi Osman said that he was forced to sign two statutory declarations back on June 28, 2008 which accused Najib and Rosmah of masterminding a conspiracy against Anwar.

PKR members had stormed the press conference even before Rahimi could begin and demanded that he stop the press conference.

However, a police report made by Rahimi at 3.03 pm earlier was available to The Malaysian Insider.

According to the report, Rahimi claimed that he was forced to sign two statutory declarations by PKR information chief Latheefa Koya as well as party members at Quality Hotel back in June 2008.

“I was forced to sign two statutory declarations on June 2008 about Anwar and Saiful. The declaration was not true because I did not write it.

“I was forced to sign it because I feared for my safety... at that time there were hundreds of Anwar’s supporters and right-hand men around Quality Hotel,” said Rahimi.

Another ex-aide turns on Anwar?

A press conference believed to be linked to Anwar Ibrahim's ongoing sodomy trial by his former aide Rahimi Osman was cancelled following disruption by a rowdy group of six individuals. The press conference was to be held at the Lotus restaurant in Klang at 4pm today, but was later cancelled following the appearance of the group. Rahimi (centre) told reporters that he had lodged a police report at the Klang district police headquarters at 2pm today over two statutory declarations made in 2008. “The police report is to say that the prior two statutory declarations are not accurate,” said Rahimi's lawyer S Ravi Chandran. The statutory declarations were related to the ongoing Anwar's sodomy trial, where he was alleged to have sodomised another aide, Saiful Bukhari Azlan.

'Force to sign SD'

According to the Klang police, Rahimi had lodged a report alleging that he was pressured by Anwar's men into making the two statutory declarations.

Klang district police chief Mohamad Mat Yusop confirmed receiving the report but refused to divulge details as the matter has been transferred to the Shah Alam district police.

"I was forced to sign two declarations in June 2008 about Anwar," Rahimi said. Rahimi appeared unfazed by the tense atmosphere at the restaurant, which was packed with reporters and later joined by the group which tried to stop the press conference. "Call off the press conference. How much were you paid? We know what happened between you and Saiful," yelled a member of the group, identified as M Jayabalan, repeatedly.

Rahimi calmly replied: "This has nothing to do with (the court case). How can I negotiate with you when you are shouting?" Jayabalan was there with six others, led by PKR vice-president aspirant K Sureshkumar, who claimed to have campaigned with Rahimi during the 2008 general election. Also spotted among the group was a member of Anwar's daughter Nurul Izzah's winning team in the Lembah Pantai division polls. "We are here to stand up for Anwar. There is nothing to expose," said Sureshkumar, who is also Anwar's special assistant in charge of Indian affairs. After Rahimi decided to end the press conference, he shook hands with Jayabalan. Several police officers were also at the premises. Rahimi is Saiful's former schoolmate. He was believed to have referred Saiful to Anwar in 2008. Saiful later replaced Rahimi who left sometime that year to pursue a career in business.

Why complain 3 years later?

Contacted for comments, Anwar's counsel N Sankara denied claims that the statutory declarations were made under duress.

Sankara said he reserved further comment until he sees Rahimi's police report and statutory declarations which he will then reference with those in his possession.

LONDON (Malaysian Insider) - Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was forced to state his case for the support of civil society after maverick blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin, who is a figurehead for various grassroots movements in Malaysia, challenged Pakatan Rakyat (PR) over their commitment to reform.

In a dialogue with Malaysians here yesterday, Raja Petra (picture, second from left), commonly known as RPK on his controversial Malaysia Today website, threatened to pull out from suppporting PR in the upcoming Galas by-election as PR had failed to deliver on promises agreed before the March 2008 elections.

In that historic elections saw the fledgling opposition pact sweep into power in five states and gain 82 seats in Parliament, denying Barisan Nasional (BN) their customary two-thirds majority in the legislative house.

But Anwar pleaded for understanding as many of the reforms could not be implemented without control of federal government and insisted that civil society should help PR come into power so that these reforms could come to past.

Raja Petra said that “prior to March 2008, we sat down for months and formulated the People’s Declaration which was an improved version of an earlier document, Agenda for Change whose author was Anwar himself when he was in prison,” the blogger who is in self-imposed exile in the UK said, referring to the former deputy prime minister’s time in prison after being sacked and then charged with sodomy and abuse of power.

The maverick blogger described how the declaration, which encompasses a wide range of issues from the economy, education, healthcare and politics, was presented to the three parties that make up PR and other opposition parties and claimed that “it was accepted more or less as an election manifesto. Because of that we went to the ground, we campaigned and criss-crossed Malaysia.”

However, he expressed his unhappiness that PR had yet to deliver on the promises in the manifesto despite being in power in several states for over two-and-a-half years. He cited examples such as the lack of newspapers, especially in Malay, by the state governments controlled by PR as it was necessary to fight the media battle leading up to the next general elections.

He compared the pace of reforms to the UK, where the Liberal Democrats only agreed to a coalition government with the Conservatives after being promised wide-ranging reforms would be implemented within two years.

“We have given PR two-and-a-half years but not a single reform has been implemented. Some can be done immediately, some two years, some 20 years. At least let us see some, then we will be quite happy and we will continue to support PR in every by and general election including Galas,” he said.

He said that PR’s huge gains in the elections was due to the support from civil society who were a genuine “third force” and cited examples such as the Bersih and Hindraf rallies in 2007 which championed free and fair elections and lobbied for Indian rights respectively.

Raja Petra reminded PR that “we the people are the boss” and the coalition needed to thrash out issues with civil society if it wanted to form federal government.

But Anwar responded by stating that PR recognised the clamour for change from the electorate and that “our friends in civil society must continue to work with us as a team. We need civil society as we cannot rely on Umno-controlled media.”

However, the PKR de facto leader insisted that the alliance’s hands were tied as much of the power to implement reform were centralised in the federal government.

Nonetheless, the Permatang Pauh MP listed several changes that have been implemented including the replacement of direct tenders with open tenders, a policy he said, had allowed Kedah to reduce quit rent to an amount totalling RM15 million but maintain revenue as it was getting better prices for timber in the state.

He also cited the Freedom of Information bill that was being enacted in Selangor, although it was still subject to the federal-level Official Secrets Act.

Anwar also added that Selangor was in the process of preparing Selangor Kini, a daily newspaper that had a targetted print run in the hundreds of thousands to be distributed to households in Selangor to combat Umno-controlled media especially among the Malay electorate.

Raja Petra also expressed his frustration at the calibre of candidates that PR had run in the last general election and offered “credible and reliable” candidates to run under PR.

He cited the fact that many PR leaders had to run for Parliament and state assembly seats as well as the fact that several legislators had defected or left PR since March 2008, most notably resulting in the BN take over of Perak in early 2009.

Party over in Sabah, Sarawak if Azmin wins

COMMENT PKR leaders like vice-president Azmin Ali – Umno unreformed, unrepentant, his critics swear – have always been uncomfortable with the change and reform agenda ostensibly flogged by de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim. It appears that one can take people like the duo out of Umno but they can’t take the Umno out of them. PKR has duplicated Umno’s Department of Dirty Tricks (DDT). It’s becoming more and more apparent everyday as the nomination process for party elections completes itself. Names have been copied from the electoral rolls and entered in the party register as members without their knowledge.

In other cases, personal details have been obtained from pay slips as in the case of the Sabah Medical Centre in Kota Kinabalu. Phantom members are those who live in one division and are registered as members in another division several hundred kilometres away.

Sabah Umno moneybags have entered the fray and are financing candidates in the PKR polls in the state. Money is being thrown around like confetti.

How a party like PKR can conduct direct elections along the lines of the Election Commission is beyond anyone. Even with the EC, there are so many complaints. How will the PKR election machinery prove itself?

Moving along, it’s not surprising that Azmin should stage-manage a press conference yesterday afternoon in Petaling Jaya after luring people there under false pretences. He wanted to conjure up the impression in public that the party leadership is solidly behind him in the quest for the deputy presidency. It wouldn’t even be surprising if Azmin had briefed Anwar and used his name before pulling this stunt in public.

The press conference comes in the wake of talk in the political grapevine in Sabah and Sarawak that Zaid Ibrahim, also in the running for the deputy presidency, will be suspended from PKR – “by hook or by crook”– if he wins or is set to win. Interestingly, Anwar’s wife and daughter, Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and Nurul Izzah, are both reportedly behind Zaid. The reason is simple. These two women cannot understand Anwar’s “silence”, if that’s the correct word, when it comes to matters that involve Azmin’s errant behaviour. So, there’s no love lost between mother and daughter, on the one hand, and Azmin, on the other.

Endless problems

Suspension is also the fate that befell 12 Sabah PKR leaders – the 12 Disciples – on Aug 25 a la Azmin despite the existence of a peace plan dated Dec 13 which promised no witch-hunt. Their eventual fate is still being decided after Anwar disputed his deal with Sabah strongman Jeffrey Gapari Kitingan.

It’s in the nature of the man (Azmin) to do such things – suspensions and bogus press conferences – as apparent from his brief two-month stint as Sabah PKR head. Although he began with much goodwill in the state and a good press, he soon ran into endless problems with the Natives when he shut out the local leadership. He dealt with them, imperial Malay style, through one unpopular division leader who has had Anwar’s ear from their Umno days and believes that he has been divinely ordained to be the Sabah chief minister.

There was widespread dismay when Azmin bulldozed through decisions without debate in Sabah PKR and had them entered in the minutes as the Gospel truth. This is something that no Sabahan worth his salt, even in the ruling Barisan Nasional, would stomach for even a moment. There are no secrets in Sabah.

Dismay soon turned into outrage when he stressed his version of PKR’s ketuanan rakyat (supremacy of the people) which sounded something suspiciously like Umno’s ketuanan Melayu (Malay supremacy).

In Sabah, there were no Malays listed in the official figures available for 1960. Several years later there is a Malay category composed of illegal immigrants mostly from the Philippines and Indonesia who have entered the electoral rolls. Even illegal immigrants from the Indian subcontinent are listed as Malays in Sabah. It’s all there in Dr Chong Eng Leong’s book, “Lest We Forget”, the local Bible on illegal immigrants in Sabah.

Local Muslims are listed in their MyKad as Dusun, Bajau, Suluk, Barunai (Brunei Malay), Bisaya, Orang Sungei, Irranun, Cocos-Keeling etc etc. The Bisaya and Orang Sungei along with the Dusun are under the KadazanDusunMurut umbrella term.

It became an all-out media war in Sabah when PKR leaders in the local chapter, led by Jeffrey, decided to run Azmin out of the state. In addition, they wanted his comrade in arms, Mustapha Kamil of Perak, out of Sarawak as the state chief.

Local warlords

Azmin will not be able to redeem himself in the eyes of the public and the party members, especially in Sabah and Sarawak, after pulling the stunt yesterday afternoon. He wants to make it appear that he’s only going for the deputy presidency after receiving overwhelming support from the party’s MPs and Senators.

Instead, he has brought disrepute to the party and damaged its image in the public eye, the same charges levelled against the Sabah 12 whom he has dubbed the “Dirty Dozen”. Both Sabah and Sarawak PKR chapters met in Miri last night in an emergency session, in the wake of the Azmin press conference, to work out a common platform for the party elections. The Sabah side was led by Jeffrey, Daniel John Jambun and Awang Ahmad Sah. The Sarawakians were led by Baru Bian and Nicholas Bawin.

If he’s really interested in the deputy presidency, Azmin should be man enough to announce it. He should take on Zaid one-to-one and let the members decide once and for all. It’s pointless encouraging others to enter the fray as well just to split Zaid’s votes.

In the event that Azmin wins the deputy presidency, it’s highly unlikely that Sabah and Sarawak will accept him. More than one half of the country will turn their back on him. The die will have been cast in that case. Anwar and Azmin can have PKR to themselves and party on. Azmin cannot win the deputy presidency in a clean fight with Zaid. Things will get even dirtier than they are now.

The local warlords in Sabah and Sarawak will then have to decide, after having backed Zaid, how they are going to re-position their politics in the face of the emerging new scenario in PKR. The majority of them will no doubt set up another vehicle, directly or indirectly, to cover Sabah and Sarawak. They will make common cause with those in Peninsular Malaysia who favour a third force in Parliament to steer between the two Malay-led warring political blocks, that is, Pakatan Rakyat and BN.

In any case, the politics of PKR and Pakatan are not for Sabah and Sarawak. That would be like going from the frying pan (BN) into the fire. If this is not immediately clear today, it will become clear tomorrow. There’s no difference between PKR and Umno as far as people in Sabah and Sarawak are concerned. The saving grace in Pakatan is the DAP and PAS.

Sabah, Sarawak to change history soon, Anwar predicts

Anwar is increasingly confident of how the Borneo electorate feel about government change.

KELANA JAYA, Sept 5 — Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim claimed tonight that Pakatan Rakyat (PR) had successfully worked its magic in the Barisan Nasional (BN) fortresses of Sabah and Sarawak, and predicts that the two East Malaysian states would lead the charge in changing the country's history.

Speaking to a small but highly-charged crowd at the Pesta Borneo programme in the PKNS Sports Complex, the PR de facto leader explained that he was reassured of this when he visited Limbang and Lawas in Sarawak last week.

“Now, I am absolutely confident that the history of Malaysia will change because of the people of Sabah and Sarawak.

“We have had our independence for more than 50 years and now, we will change... change for justice, for human rights, for respect. You will determine the history of Malaysia,” he said.

His words were met with thunderous applause from the crowd of East Malaysian youths, one of whom even stood up on his chair to lead the crowd to louder cheers.

“Malaysia is a land of justice. Men and women here were born free. So we must be able to accept and respect each of our differences and honour the constitutional guarantee of freedom and justice for all Malaysians,” he said.

Anwar noted that during his trip last week, his observation of the people in Sarawak showed him that East Malaysians badly yearned for change.

“There is a very encouraging trend now in Sabah and Sarawak. There is a greater awareness there... contrary to the media interpretation.

“There are people there who actually want change and justice and they want to defend their rights to their land. If this is the trend, then Sabah and Sarawak will determine the future of the nation,” he said.

Anwar urged the youths to ensure that they counted themselves in the equation, pointing out that they would be the ones responsible for the nation's future.

“So please... be counted. We have a responsibility. We fight not because we harbour grudges, not because we want to steal the land of others but because we want the rights to our own.

“We do not steal the rights of others but we fight for our own. This is a very important beginning and we will persevere until we see a united, just Malaysia,” he said.

Anwar's romantic words worked wonders in the crowd and although small in numbers, their cheers filled the hall like they were thousands.

Outside the function later, Anwar said he was confident the PR had done its job well and right in Sabah and Sarawak.

“I am very confident that we will do very well (in the Sarawak elections). We are working the ground and I see all.. the Dayaks, the Malays, Chinese, everyone working hard together,” he said.

He noted that PR's preparations for the impending Sarawak polls were on track and announced that a major function would be held this September 15 in Sabah.

'FFF, once led by Anwar, funded by US govt'

KUALA LUMPUR: The Government Accountability Project (GAP), a Washington DC non-governmental whistle-blower organisation, has revealed that the Foundation for the Future (FFF), an organisation once headed by Anwar Ibrahim, was funded by the US government.

In its 42-page report released on July 8, GAP had based its findings on hundreds of documents delivered to it under the US Freedom of Information Act.

GAP said the FFF was actually established and funded by the US Department of State at the behest of Elizabeth Cheney, the daughter of then vice-president Dick Cheney, and the Bush administration's neoconservatives.

A report by The Asia Sentinel, an Asian web-based publication, said GAP also found that the FFF was established and operated in a "highly irregular manner" by Bush administration officials and employees, including Shaha Ali Riza.

Shaha had been identified as the girlfriend of Paul Wolfowitz, and the latter was forced to leave the World Bank as its president in June 2007 after it became known that he had promoted Shaha to triple the World Bank's salary guidelines.

The Asia Sentinel claimed that Anwar had previously disavowed any US fundingfor FFF, established in 2005 as "an essential front on the global war on terror" and part of President George Bush's "freedom agenda" to promote democracy and reform in the Middle East and Africa.

Anwar had been asked by many, including Umno Youth head Khairy Jamaluddin, to explain the FFF's funding.

Matching money to fund the FFF was supposed to come from 11 countries.

Ultimately, GAP said, less than half of the US$60 million (RM193 million) in initial funding for the foundation (as envisioned by Elizabeth Cheney) ever materialised.

GAP said the great multilateral effort devolved into a unilateral US initiative supported only by a few countries, and eventually the major proportion of funding came from the US, in violation of the spirit of the legislation in creating the foundation.

The Reversal of Anwar Ibrahim

This week, Barack Obama reached out once more to the Muslim world. Following his promise last June in Cairo, President Obama hosted a Summit on Entrepreneurship, “to identify how we can deepen ties between business leaders, foundations and social entrepreneurs in the United States and Muslim communities around the world.” Bringing together 250 participants from 60 countries, the Administration once again tried to build bridges between East and West, and even brought Secretary of State Hillary Clinton along to close the summit on Tuesday evening.

Yet it remains as hard as ever to figure out who are America’s real friends and allies in the Muslim world, aside from the good King and Queen of Jordan, a handful of emirates, and the Saudi royals. Take the strange case of Malaysia, for example. The Malaysian state and its ruling party are broadly constructive and cooperative with the United States — but its political opposition is another story. And that’s the reverse of what often gets portrayed in Western media.

The present Malaysian leadership is pro-business, pro-American and prepared to stand up and be counted in the Muslim world as a strategic U.S. ally. During the recent Nuclear Security Summit in Washington, Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak pledged to assist Washington on numerous fronts, and even shut off petroleum supplies to Iran within hours of returning home to Kuala Lumpur.

Though Malaysia isn’t quite as far along as Muslim nations such as Jordan or Egypt with respect to Israel — it refuses to recognize the Jewish state or its passports — its official anti-Israel position does not come from a societal wellspring of anti-Semitism. Though Malaysia used to have a small Jewish community of its own, it dwindled as a consequence of the Second World War rather than, as in most of the Muslim world, as vengeance for Israel’s founding.

Malaysia’s reputation as a majority-Muslim nation known for moderation and stability is hard won in this decade, and a result of the leadership of the present Prime Minister and his immediate predecessor.

Prior to October 2003, Malaysia’s position as a responsible member of the community of nations was less certain. This was thanks to the country’s former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohammed. Even in power, Mahathir was a well-known anti-Semite and anti-American.

This past January, Mahathir declared that the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States were “staged as an excuse to mount attacks on the Muslim world.” He didn’t stop there. Speaking at that same month’s General Conference for the Support of Al-Quds (that is, the Arabic name for Jerusalem), he declared that Israel was created to solve “the Jewish problem” in Europe after Hitler failed to complete the Final Solution. “Even after their massacre by the Nazis of Germany,” said Mahathir, the Jews “survived to continue to be a source of even greater problems for the world.”

The case of Mahathir isn’t merely one of a has-been politician with a penchant for vile Jew-baiting. He still retains influence with hardliners. And the man whom he mentored, and then repudiated, is now leader of Malaysia’s political opposition — and he’s showing the world how well he learned under Mahathir’s tutelage.

Anti-Semitism is now resurgent in Malaysia thanks to opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, a charismatic firebrand of a politician who collaborated with Mahathir — as a deputy prime minister and top aide— for nearly a decade in a relationship that Ibrahim described as being one of “father and son.” In 1998 Ibrahim got impatient about taking over from Mahathir, embarked upon a power struggle, and lost. For his troubles, Mahathir put him on trial for corruption and sodomy: and Anwar Ibrahim ended up in jail at the hand of his mentor.

Upon his release, Anwar Ibrahim came to Washington, D.C., and has spent the past decade cultivating a genteel, enlightened image in the West. Otherwise informed American observers of foreign affairs have adopted him as an exemplar of liberal Southeast Asian and/or Muslim democratic governance. Just a few years ago, he was invited to teach for a year at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, from which he cultivated the acquaintances of eminent Jewish Americans like Paul Wolfowitz — as a means of showing just how far behind him was his own militant Islamist past.

Indeed, as recently as 2008, Al Gore — usually a savvy and perceptive man — could be found posting on his blog in defense of Ibrahim’s dignity in the face of criticism. That’s big-name Western approval one can’t buy — but one can work hard for it with the right enemies and media outreach inside the Beltway.

It also helps if one knows what to tell Western audiences who tune in to Western media outlets. This past March, in an interview with CNN World, Ibrahim told Wajahat Ali, “Stoking the flames of anti-Americanism and anti-Semitism is a good distraction from the stench in [Muslim societies’] own backyard, namely rampant corruption, denial of basic human rights, abuse of power and the suppression of civil society.”

The reality is that if you’d asked a well-informed American who the liberal democrat was in Malaysia between 1999 and 2009, he or she might well have said, “Anwar Ibrahim.”

But does Anwar Ibrahim’s portrayal of himself outside Malaysia match Anwar Ibrahim’s actions within his own country? Unfortunately, Ibrahim has decided to make his mark in domestic Malaysian politics — away from CNN, Al Gore, and Johns Hopkins — as an anti-American, anti-Semitic demagogue.

The proximate cause of Ibrahim’s descent into the foul rhetoric of anti-Semitism was his decision to exploit the government’s hiring of a Washington, D.C., public relations firm, APCO, to do minor communications work within Malaysia. Like many international firms, this one has done business within Israel, and even counts among its senior personnel persons of the Jewish faith.

Ibrahim has now effectively trashed his old friends in Washington and has used this PR contract as an excuse to spin a dark conspiracy theory of Jewish control, Zionist plots, and subversion.

Ibrahim’s lieutenants have charged, among other things, that the Malaysian government has “engag[ed] a company that has a close tie with the Zionist regime in Israel. Its advisory panels consist of former security chief of the Israeli government, and many of their staff are formerly from the Israel Security Agency,” and that “its operators in Tel Aviv have close links to the Zionist regime.”

Ibrahim himself has delved headlong into anti-Semitic theorizing, publicly alleging that there are “Israeli intelligence personnel in the Police IT unit.” Worse, he connected his anti-Semitism to his anti-Americanism, when he angrily denounced the Malaysian Prime Minister’s politically courageous decision to stand with President Obama and cut off oil supplies to an Iran seeking nuclear weapons. Ibrahim stood in the legislature to charge that the supposedly “Jewish-controlled” PR firm hired by the Prime Minister was, in fact, working to manipulate Malaysian policy on America’s behalf.

Ibrahim angrily demanded: “How can our foreign policy have changed dramatically,” unless Jews were controlling Malaysian affairs for America’s benefit? “Our policy on Iran shows how weak we are. Unprecedented in the history of our country, even Mahathir Mohamad himself never shifted in Afghanistan and the Palestinian question.”

Remarkably, Ibrahim closed his statement with oblique praise for Mahathir — the man who shaped Ibrahim’s core thinking on things Jewish and American.

The sad truth is that we shouldn’t be surprised by Ibrahim’s descent into anti-Americanism or anti-Semitism. When he told CNN that “stoking the flames of anti-Americanism and anti-Semitism is a good distraction,” he wasn’t condemning: he was observing and prescribing.

This is not the first time Ibrahim has gone down this road: he has a history of Jew-baiting when expediency calls for it. To pick just one example, in 2008, with Malaysian elections approaching, he casually tossed out this charge in an interview with IslamOnline: “I have evidence proving that the government is backing the Jewish lobby in the U.S. and some parties inside Israel.” (To the credit of the Malaysian electorate, Ibrahim’s opposition coalition failed to win a majority in that election.)

And as scholars of terrorist finance like Ilan Weinglass have documented, “Anwar Ibrahim is a founder and director of the Muslim Brotherhood affiliated International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT), a think tank in Virginia that has alleged links to terrorism.” In 2002-2003, Ibrahim’s institute in Virginia was even investigated by the FBI, IRS and CIA for alleged financing of Hamas and Hizbollah.

In looking for America’s friends in the Muslim world, it’s often difficult to know the Good Guy from the Bad Guy. But it’s a good rule of thumb that the politician promulgating anti-Semitic conspiracy theories is not a friend of America.

In Malaysia, the events of the past few months have made it crystal clear a strange role reversal: it’s opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim who is whipping up anti-Semitic sentiment — and it’s Prime Minister Najib Razak who is, for better or worse, standing firm with President Obama and the United States.

Lim Kit Siang said "Let us have higher standards in politics and elections, as it is the avenue to serve to people and nation and not to indulge in personal attacks and character-assassinations."

He further reiterated "We can do the same but we refuse to do so. Zaid has regretted his drinks in his youth. But he has gone one step further to declare that he will not follow the gutter politics of the Umno leaders."

I am pretty sure there are some Muslims in UMNO who are boozers,if not publicly, at least discreetly, in the closet.However, they are not the one standing for election, therefore,for now, they are out of the limelight.

The rabble-rouser Lim Kit Siang asking those in UMNO to stand up to identify themselves as drunkards is nothing but a cheap shot and sign of desperation.

Zaid Ibrahim, like it or not, has, by his candidacy opened himself to public scrutiny of his character.Anyone running for public office would have to bear the embarrassement of being exposed for their ethical,religious or moral transgressions. Zaid has admitted to his sins.

If he can prove that the smear campaign is untrue and done out of malice, than he has the right to take legal action against those who slander him.

That may be water under the bridge now because he has admitted to consuming alcohol and the love for race horses.

I am not sure whether Islam is against keeping race horses.There are horse racings in some of the Middle Eastern countries.The Dubai World Cup is 11 of the world's thoroughbreds racing and is now worth US$10 million.Maybe, Zaid should send his horse to Dubai.

Politics, the world over, more so in a democracy, is a dirty game.Those who stands for public office should make sure they have a clean slate or be prepared to be ridiculed and shamed if their dirty linens are washed in public by their enemies.

Personal attacks and character assassination is not something unfamiliar to politics, it happened everywhere, even in the most advanced democracies.

Obama, was branded a closet Muslim by his rivals during the campaign for the US presidency.The American voters didn't buy it.The beer-bashing of Zaid may end up the same way.The folks in Hulu Selangor might not care about his boozy past and his love for race horses.

If you have skeletons in the closet and someone caught you with your pants down than it's just too bad, it becomes fodder for the cannon.

I personally think Zaid drinking habit should not make him a lesser person and should not be an issue.

However, what I think is not important or crucial to Zaid winning the by-election.It is how the majority of Malays in Hulu Selangor view his indulgence with alcohol and race horses that would decide his fate.

In the West, casual and social drinking are acceptable but alcoholism are frown upon by society.In the Muslim worlds alcohol is completely tabooed and punishable under Sharia.

Zaid could just be a social drinker, but than Islam does not differentiate between social drinkers and alcoholics, it carries the same sin and punishment.

In the West, alcoholics and drug-abusers are considered as patients that need help.In Islam they are considered as sinners and criminals that must be punished.There is a distinct difference between Muslim and non-Muslim view of alcohol.

That's besides the point.The point I am trying to make here is why do people like Lim Kit Siang and Raja Petra, who can attack others in wild abandon, suddenly become averse to personal attacks, an art they have perfected and are very skillful at. Najib has been in worse scatching attacks by Pakatan leaders and pro-Pakatan bloggers than people like Zaid Ibrahim and Anwar Ibrahim.When others played the same game they blow a fuse and decried of being hit below the belt.

The privilege to smear or sling mud at others is not theirs alone, others can do the same.There is 'quid pro quo' for everything.Pakatan leaders seemed to think they are holier than thou and only they have the privilege to attack others and not the other way around.

Raja Petra in his blog here in critical response to my article 'Anwar's Can Of Worms' thinks loyalty to a leader is not important.He prefered loyalty to a cause.How can you be loyal to a cause if you have no loyalty to a leader that believe in the cause.Just like captain of a ship, whether they like it or not, the crew must obey his orders, no matter how wrong he is, such orders must be executed.Without a leader there would be chaos and anarchy.

Even in organised chaos you need some kind of a leader let alone a revolutionary political cause that have been organised to topple a regime.

That's why you need a captain to helm a ship, a general to plan and lead in a war, a prime minister or president to lead a country, a CEO to head a company and umpteen more.

In everything we do there must be a leader to lead a group with common interest and objective. Without dedication and loyalty of the followers no leader or cause can be successful.

Anwar Ibrahim like Najib Tun Razak is a politician and public figure.Likewise, he has no immunity against public criticism.Anyone, can criticise him so long as such criticisms are based on facts and the truths.

Anwar, without loyalty from his people would become a "rebel without a cause".

Oppositions supporters cheered when they heard the disclosure of Anwar Ibrahim that Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak use Jews expertise to raise his image in the eyes of the people and to the world.

What makes them so proud is Anwar came forward with a variety of evidences including a letter of agreement between APCO and the government of Malaysia and the alleged agreement between APCO Worldwide and the Government of Israel.

Still a mystery though on how did Anwar grab copies of aggrement signed between a global company with the government of Israel?

Even Harakah, in its latest edition, played a story entitled 'Israel in the Prime Minister's office' on it front page based simply on Anwar's statement. Many were shocked with Harakah exposure. Even I felt the same initially.

But after chatting with some old friends, including a former spy who had communicating experiences with Israel's agent in Singapore and Jakarta in the 70's and 80's, finally I came to understand the real picture behind the story.

For me personally, it was a surprise as the former spy was still interested in following the development of this rumor especially involving the APCO.`` You know who told Anwar to blow the stories about APCO?'`` No '' ..... I answered him.`` This is Aasil Kazi Ahmad's work," said the former officer. Everybody knows who this chap Aasil Kazi is.

He is Anwar's strategic media advisor. An American-Pakistani which plays important roles to potray Anwar as a fighter of democracy, human rights and establish good relationship between Islam and the west through dialogues.

What is interesting about this Aasil is his good media networking which entitled him to obtain a special treatment from the West and the international media, especially one that is owned by Rupert Murdoch, a Jews who has monopoly of the world's major media organizations.

Think for a moments, is it logic for a Muslim leader like Anwar to get a special attention from Jewish-owned media easily? I dont think so...unless Anwar is only acting as a muslim leader.

He is a Pakistani. A Muslim countries which hates the Jews and is often labeled as a terrorist nest. But it is different with Aasil, he is considered special?

Aasil actually was lifted as a strategic media advisor for Anwar because of his good relationship with some powerful pople in the United States and Israel. Aasil even have good access to Al Jazeera television that is known to be very influential in the Arab world.

It is strongly believed that Asil is one of the mastermind to exaggerate and try to implicate Najib and Rosmah with Mogolian Model, Altantuya Shaaribu murder.

He has been good in his work and that entitle him to be one of Anwar's right man and practically enjoys the full trust and confidence of the opposition leader.

On top of that, with his good media networking, Aasil has been able to get many interview slots with foreign media around the world for Anwar, which further enhances his image in Anwar's eye. But many do not know that apart from his good media networking, Aasil also have good relations with the CIA and Mossad agents operating in Southeast Asia.

That is why imigration department records shows that he frequented to Singapore which is strongly believed for the purpose of meeting these different groups of spies.

That is why Aasil has left Malaysia to seek refuge in Singapore for fear of arrest under the Internal Security Act (ISA). Singapore is a safe haven for him.

The exposure about the internal problems of PKR from time to time made by former PKR leaders and Anwar's officers led him to fear for his own safety. But in my view, if he is not guilty then why he should be afraid and escape to Singapore? Basicly Aasil's fear is related with the good job done by APCO all this while.

In other words, APCO has successfully played its role especially in exposing Anwar's true color to the foreign media and this has distracted their sympathy towards Anwar. With APCO in the picture, the table has changed with more positive media attention and coverage has started going towards Najib.

Prior to this, it was Anwar who garned all the international attention. APCO's good work has not been good for Aasil's image and this made him depressed and brought him to the brink of total madness.

Sympathy towards Anwar has been on the decilne as the western media now sees him as a sodomiser who is trying to evade justice. And be mindful that there are some very powerful conservative media organizations in the west which totally reject such abnormal sexual act.

On way to stop this flow of attention towards Najib was to expose APCO in the Parliament and try to associate it with the Jews, and any form of association with the Jews or Yahudi is a taboo for the Muslim community in this country.

Before fleeing to Singapore, Aasil has work out this plan of exposing APCO with Anwar. Among his last effort to revive Anwar in the eye of the western media. So it is no surprise that Anwar now always talk about APCO. It is all Aasil's directions and strategies.

However, from my point of view, no matter what Anwar says about APCO, the truth is he doesn't give a damm whether it is run by the Jewish or whoever, what matters the most to him is to curd media' s attention towards Najib.

In order to do so, APCO must be put to a stop. And like always, Anwar is using his forked tongue in order to accomplish his own mission. Forked tongue ....that is the true behavior of Anwar, who has been labeled as chameleons by Asiaweek.

Anwar blames Najib, Rosmah for latest PKR resignations

PUTRAJAYA, March 1 — Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim accused Datuk Seri Najib Razak and his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor of being behind the latest resignations from PKR.

“It’s a difficult for me to understand if there’s no other circumstances, knowing that the Najib-Rosmah strategy is to try to buy people as much as possible,” the de facto PKR leader told reporters outside the Federal Court here.

Nibong Tebal MP Tan Tee Beng announced he was leaving PKR today, days after he faced a party disciplinary board over his criticisms against deputy president Senator Dr Syed Husin Ali and Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.

Last night, former Penang Deputy Chief Minister I Mohd Fairus Khairuddin quit PKR to join Umno while former PKR secretary-general Datuk Salehuddin Hashim confirmed resigning from the party two weeks ago.

Salehuddin was seen with Tan today when the latter announced his resignation.

Another Anwar’s ally, Bayan Baru MP Datuk Seri Zahrain Hashim, quit the party two weeks ago to become an independent MP after he cited a lack of faith in the party leadership.

Salehuddin predicts exodus from PKR

KUALA LUMPUR, March 1 — Former PKR secretary-general Datuk Salehuddin Hashim predicted today the resignations of more than ten lawmakers from the party, setting the stage for a major exodus which could decimate the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) lynchpin.

Speaking to reporters today about speculation that ten MPs and state assemblymen were preparing to quit Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s party, he said it was “maybe more.”

“Yes (there will be those who are leaving)...take away the socialist group, take away the NGO group, take away the cronies...you can count for yourself and you will get the answer,” he said after accompanying Nibong Tebal MP Tan Tee Beng to a press conference where the Penang lawmaker said he was quitting the party.

Salehuddin, who resigned from his post in January, has also quit PKR.

His resignation from the party had come as a big blow to PKR as he once held a top post and was a senior party member, and part of Anwar’s inner circle.

Besides Tan, former deputy Penang Chief Minister Mohd Fairus Khairuddin also announced he was quitting the party yesterday. Fairus has joined Umno.

When asked today if BN could regain its two-thirds majority as a result of impending defections, Salehuddin said:

“They are leaving to become independents so Pakatan Rakyat will lose its standing of holding more than one-third of Parliament seats but this does not mean BN will get back its two-thirds majority.”

Salehuddin said he expected Anwar would do anything to persuade the remainder of PKR MPs not to leave the party.

“But don’t think that those who leave the party do not have the spirit of reformasi,” he said.

The former PKR secretary-general said the situation PKR finds itself in now was a result of the leadership’s ridicule of those who left the party.

“When you mock people for some time, then they will leave,” he said.

After Karpal Singh, the second person who made the allegation openly that Anwar is a " peliwat " is a Member of Parliament for Kubang Kerian at that time, namely Hj Mohd Sabu. Openly in a lecture at the Kubang Kerian in August 1998, MP Mohd Sabu bestowed Anwar the title of 'Anwar Ibrahim al-Juburi.
