KUALA LUMPUR(Bernama) - MCA Bukit Bintang division chairman Datuk Dr Lee Chong Meng Thursday announced that he is quitting the party and formally joining Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR).

Lee said he had sent in his letter of resignation to the MCA headquarters Wednesday afternoon after he returned from overseas.

"I was initially reluctant to quit the party. When (MCA president Datuk Seri) Dr Chua announced that I would be suspended for allegedly misusing government funds, I've decided that that's it, I will leave," he told Bernama when contacted, here Thursday.

On Tuesday, MCA demanded Lee to make known his membership status to the party leadership in order to determine whether the membership suspension meted on him should be carried out or not.

The MCA disciplinary board had earlier recommended that Lee be suspended for three years for misusing funds allocated by the government in 2008.

There have been talks that Lee had joined PKR as early as June where he admitted that he had filled in an application form then, but did not sign it.

However, when he was recently elected as PKR Bukit Bintang chief, the talks have become more intense but Lee claimed he was overseas when the election was held and he knew nothing of it.

Lee denied that he had misused the government funds, explaining that the RM60,000 allocation was for Chinese New Year activities where he himself had to fork out an additional RM40,000 for the events. - BERNAMA
