Both former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and the DAP’s Lim Kit Siang demanded an explanation today from the country’s previous PM, after news reports emerged last week suggesting Malaysia had signed away its oil rights.
Murphy Oil, which had entered a production-sharing contract with national oil company, Petronas, for Block L and Block M offshore of Limbang, announced last week that it was ceasing operations because “it was no longer part of Malaysia.”
“It would seem that the loss of a huge oil producing area that had apparently belonged to Malaysia is okay,” said Dr Mahathir today in a posting on his blog.
Separately, Lim said Abdullah should explain whether he had indeed signed off US$100 billion (RM320 billion) worth of oil rights to resolve Brunei’s claims to Limbang a month before he stepped down as prime minister in March last year and if so, why.

By Adib ZalkapliKUALA LUMPUR, April 30 — Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi denied today that he signed away oil rights to Brunei after a scathing attack from his predecessor Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
The former prime minister issued a statement today denying Dr Mahathir’s accusation that he had given up RM320 billion in potential oil earnings in return for Brunei dropping its claim over Limbang in Sarawak.
Dr Mahathir had claimed Abdullah had given away Malaysia’s claim to oil offshore of Limbang following a trip to Bandar Seri Begawan in the waning days of his administration last year.
Abdullah said today that the areas known as Block L and Block M would be jointly developed by the two countries for a period of 40 years.
“The financial and operational modalities for giving effect to this arrangement will be further discussed by the two sides. This means that in so far as the oil and gas resources are concerned, the agreement is not a loss for Malaysia,” said Abdullah in his statement.
The country’s fifth prime minister clarified that his visit to Brunei which was made three weeks before his departure was aimed at solving a long standing border dispute “without any disadvantage for Malaysia.”
The visit resulted in an agreement between the two countries to establish a permanent land and sea boundary.
“This agreement serves to settle certain overlapping claims which existed in the past which included the area of the concession blocks known before as Block L and Block M. Sovereign rights to the resources in this area now belongs to Brunei.
“However, for this area the agreement includes a commercial arrangement under which Malaysia will be allowed to participate, on a commercial basis, to jointly develop the oil and gas resources in this area for a period of 40 years,” said Abdullah.
He added that he signed the agreement to solve a border dispute with Brunei with prior approval from the Cabinet.
“In my capacity as the Prime Minister of Malaysia, I signed the Exchange of Letters with the Sultan of Brunei after the Malaysian Cabinet approved the deal on 11 February 2009,” said Abdullah.
Earlier today both former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and the DAP’s Lim Kit Siang demanded an explanation from Abdullah after news reports emerged last week suggesting Malaysia had signed away its oil rights.

The shooting incident by the police which claimed the life of an innocent 14-year-old schoolboy in Shah Alam is most regrettable.
MCA takes a serious view of the case where gunshots were fired openly at an unarmed person, more so in this case which involved a boy in his teens.
It makes me wonder what threat the policemen were confronted with when they opened fire.
Were proper procedures followed when they discharge their firearms? Were the police confronted with any life or death situation?
Even if the boy had refused to stop his car, the shots fired by the police were uncalled for and unnecessary.
The people need to have those answers and the outcome of the investigations should be made public.
No stone should be left unturned and those found to have abused their powers should be brought to book immediately.
The investigations should be wrapped up quickly by the special committee entrusted to oversee investigations into the case so that justice can be served swiftly.
There should not be any attempt to cover up. Protect men who are worthy and expose and weed out those who abuse their power from the force.
The police force needs to redeem its image so that the people can look up to the force with dignity, respect and trust again.

Well said Dr Chua, no stone should be left unturned, the police should not be any attempt to cover up....they should not wait anymore to bring the tainted president to justice for a crime of unnatural sex...such people are nuisance to the society...must be locked up.....
Coming back to the police fatal shooting;
I would say the police are not perfect, anyway nobody is, but some people seems to be ignorance and absolutely gullible. Probably never experience being a victim of any brutalize act committed by dangerous criminals who show no mercy. Many defenseless peace loving citizen have die in that manner, yet we have people who think it is alright for potential criminal to roam free to commit crime. To these people logic the police allow to act only after the criminals commit a clear cut crime!....
From what we learn so far, Aminulrasyid behavior is conductive to a potential criminal activities, the probability was high then, thats why the police act, is it wrong to take proactive action on such situation?...in the dark and at high speed chase, how the hell the police know is a kid behind the wheel...only now when the picture is clearer, the police may have err, that doesn't mean police is wrong. In this circumstances the police action is right to take a proactive approach and such exercise should not be forgo, which otherwise may have cause death to some innocent citizen.....then the same people will shout at the police that they are not doing their job...We cannot dismiss an intangible fact that on other similar situation, the police actions did preempted criminal activities and even averted innocent death....This mishap is done unintentionally but on good faith, Aminulrasyid's death is unfortunate event and let it be a lesson for everybody,
But it is disgusting to see politician capitalize on such regrettable event for political mileage. Instead of condemning the police forces, why not give constructive proposal how to bring the crime rate down which is definitely fruitful and will be of great service to the society...so that people are safer on the street as well as in their own house.....
The problem with politicians is they only tell you half truth or not even half if they found it insalubrious. They will tell you what you like to hear.....

Without question, he would like to have a weak implementing of the law so that criminal like him would get away. This is the reason why this cunning old fox put his foot in to capitalize on the poor guy misfortune by condemning the men in blue, hopefully they come after him and that will be fun.
