The Penang government's decision to fence up a large compound in front of Dewan Sri Pinang has come under fire by certain quarters, who say that public space has been compromised.
In a statement today, Penang Gerakan Youth chief Oh Tong Keong said the previous Barisan Nasional government had never interfered with activities of NGOs in the compound.
"But now with the place fenced up, people won't be able to use the place freely. Is the state government reversing away from democracy?" asked Oh.
A 400m metal fence has been erected around the compound of Dewan Sri Pinang.
Oh said the site had previously been used for public events by NGOs, politicians, civil societies and concerned groups. Human rights group Suaram had organised six anti-ISA activities in 2008 and 2009.
He also criticised Pakatan Rakyat for "(shutting) the door of democracy" now that they are governing the state.
While previously in the opposition, they were "shouting for democracy at every opportunity".
No response from state government
Suaram has suggested that a speaker's corner be set up at Dewan Sri Pinang for people to freely voice their views and opinions.
When contacted, former Suaram Penang coordinator Lau Shu Shi said that she has not been able to obtain much information on the fence from authorities.
She claimed that her letters to local government committee chairperson Chow Kon Yeow for more information have gone unanswered.
"They say that the fence is to protect the green area and beautify the compound, but I'm disappointed because there were no consultations before it was built," said Lau (left).
"The fence has been up since the end of last October, and it is higher than a normal fence that only aims to protect the beauty of the compound. To me, they are trying to stop people from going in and coming out."
Aliran member Anil Netto has also voiced concern, estimating that the site spans about 20,000 sq ft.
This is DAP , calling for press freedom , but barring certain MSMs from covering their press conference , like what LKS say one country two systems , same here in Penang , no difference .
This MSM is pro-other and good at propaganda and spinning story.
ReplyDeleteAs the the fencing. Are you saying that not to fence is democratic - my goodness, GERAKAN, pls continue to sleep.
Of course tit for tat. Why should they be giving face to MSM.
