UMNO and MCA-brother or satellite vassal?
The way UMNO is handling the MCA crisis is tactically wrong. Tactics are employed at winning battles. Strategy is the better way. It is for winning wars. Strategy is for longer term.
The longer term interest is to ensure MCA retains the trust of the Chinese community. It must see MCA as a dependable, rational and stable representative of the Chinese community.
Now how has UMNO been doing its part to help out MCA?
First, it's treating MCA just like a little brother who needs twisting on the ear. Not respectable to treat a party which has helped out UMNO since the 1940's not just by delivering Chinese allegiance but at times, material help.
Two, it offers solutions to MCA in pompous and even arrogant manner- everything splashed on the political silver screen. Muhyidin is not going to get best actor award for that. You are asking the MCA to accomplish something within a forced time table. The MCA leaders have been battling it out for over 18 months.
How does this typical arrogant UMNO approach create more damage than healing process?
Very simply, it makes MCA lose face. Not just to MCA, but to all Chinese in general losing face is a big deal. UMNO makes MCA lose face. It loses trust. In Chinese culture, losing face, saving face and giving face is very important and should never be forgotten. A person can lose face as a result of confronting an individual or putting them on the spot or acting in an arrogant manner or failing to show appropriate respect.
Has UMNO accorded MCA mutual respect?
Perhaps, it's timely to give UMNO a reminder in the exercise of humility. Please remember that in the last general elections UMNO candidates obtained 2.38 million votes within which there was a sizeable portion of non Malay votes. Actual Malay votes UMNO candidates received were probably around the region of 2 million.
Accordingly please stop to think. You have 3.5 million card carrying, profanity shouting members and yet you could only muster 2 million Malay votes. That means more than 1 million of your own members rejected your half past six candidates. With this kind of legitimacy, you want to throw your weight around?
There were over 5 million Malay voters in the last elections. That means over 3 million Malays did not vote for UMNO candidates, demolishing your claim that you are representing the Malays. What UMNO represents is just the concept of Malay interests and Malays as a concept simpliciter. In substance, it hopes to regain.
What I am trying to say, is that if UMNO wants to regain Malay trust it must ensure it regains the trust of its political partners. At the very elementary level, it must begin by giving trust to MCA leadership. It must not show its taking sides. The only way it does this, is by letting MCA be MCA. Let it be itself. Allow MCA to carry out what measures IT sees necessary not what UMNO sees it.
Perhaps the UMNO leadership needs to learn a few things about face in Chinese culture. Face idiomatically meaning "dignity; prestige". Face is the respectability and/or deference which a person can claim for himself from others.
MCA has achieved some standing among the Chinese community. It can validly claim the same standing as UMNO does within the Malay community despite losing much support at the previous elections. If UMNO, despite losing much Malay ground can still go around convincing itself that it still represents the Malays- that same privilege must be accorded to MCA. But by imposing your weight around and throat-pushing your solution on the MCA crisis, UMNO causes the MCA to lose face.
UMNO leaders must learn some interaction etiquette. Face is something that is emotionally invested, and that can be lost, maintained, or enhanced, and must be constantly attended to in interaction. In general, people cooperate in maintaining face in interaction, such cooperation being based on the mutual vulnerability of face.
How vulnerable is Face?
Face is a sense of worth that comes from knowing one's status and reflects concern with the congruency between one's performance or appearance and one's real worth. "Face" means 'prestige; dignity; honor; respect; status'.
Lin Yutang writing in 1935, considered the psychology of "face" saying as interesting as the Chinese physiological face is, it is the psychological face that makes a still more fascinating study. It is not a face that can be washed or shaved, but a face that can be "granted" and "lost" and "fought for" and "presented as a gift." This is something UMNO needs to learn about Chinese social psychology. Abstract and intangible, it is yet the most delicate standard by which Chinese social intercourse is regulated. Losing face has far more serious implications for one's sense of self-esteem or decency than gaining face.
The other pertinent point to note, that the way UMNO handles the MCA crisis actually reveals to others its true character. Anyone who does not wish to declare his social bankruptcy must show a regard for face: he must claim for himself, and must extend to others, some degree of compliance, respect, and deference in order to maintain a minimum level of effective social functioning. By bullying others, being pugnacious in some ways reveal the social bankruptcy of UMNO.
By bossing around, UMNO shows its impoliteness. Some sociologists have shown that there are two sides in a face. The positive and the negative face. Positive face is the positive self-image or personality claimed by interactants". MCA has the legitimate desire to be seen as the representative voice of the Chinese and it expects this self image to be appreciated and approved by others. UMNO cannot replace MCA as the voice of the Chinese. Negative face is the basic claim to territories, personal preserves, rights to non-distraction -- i.e. to freedom of action and freedom from imposition.
I found a most pertinent observation about the concept of face that is worth pondering:-
Face is the public image that a person claims for himself. Within this claim there are three dimensions. Autonomy face describes a desire to appear independent, in control, and responsible. Fellowship face describes a desire to seem cooperative, accepted, and loved. Competence face describes a desire to appear intelligent, accomplished, and capable
What'face' are you talking about? The MCA has no face, neither has it a mouth. What have the MCA ministers done or said regarding the BTN and the SPM Chinese Language paper issues?

Respect is earned. The prolonged crisis has incapacitated MCA rendering her ineffective in representing the community. If only all the elected principal office bearers are disciplined and observed the party constitution and her hierarchical set up, MCA should be able to achieve her entrenched missions and objectives.
ReplyDeleteIn a democratic party, differences in views within the party should not be portrayed as facing a crisis and needed a fresh polls. Every leader should put party above self and not highlighting every little issue to the public, washing dirty linens in public is a taboo. The recently, public handing over of the "resignation letters" is an example. MCA has her HQ and every official party matter ought to be executed in the HQ which is clearly stipulated in the party constitution.
To be fair, MCA have done quite a lot for the community and the number and strenght of the party is very important in the present Malaysian political environment. MCA is not to be blamed but some of her principal office bearers who have lost their senses, impatiently trying to helm the party with any cost without any consideration for the party's fate.
However, enough is enough just embrace GUP which is inclusive to heal, unite and serve for the sake of the nation and the Chinese Community.

Please do not blame the party, and please do not say that MCA have not done anything for the community. Even PR is not perfect or ideal, we should comment with conviction and clear conscience.
Just list down what have the present PR or her allies done for the Chinese community.
the present MCA only play around with LTL and gang, no more time to help the chinese and the community, still cannot implement the GUP, whereas the PR already leaved behind their differences and focus on the things that they agreed together that is to capture PUTRAJAYA in the next GE

MCA has 60 years Old Face , but due to the SieChuan Change Face opera introduced to Malaysia, the Brutus Gang learned even better to Change Their Faces not only one, but 13 faces together. WML change his 33 years face to condemn OTK . William Cheng & William Chung change their faces to accuse MCA who has given them a lot of wealth and position , datukship. Chinese say Faces are given, But Defame is from oneself. We are small person Without Face but we want MCA strong, but the Changing Faces from Brutus Gang leaders have Making Chinese Angry not party , but UMNO & Faces of 13 Tai Po. Please do not generalise. Leaders of today are different from those of yesteryears. MCA have her noble visions and objectives. OTK is supposed to reegineer and reenergise the party but unfortunately he is embroiled in the present party's predicament. If all leaders can come to their senses and embrace GUP to unite, heal and serve MCA can be a formidable force to serve effectively. Sometimes, we need to ask ourselves how much have we contributed to the well being of the nation and the Chinese community. Shouting from outside or just being angry does not solve anything at all.
ReplyDeleteWe need to ponder very hard, just heard Utz Hadi saying over TV "Buat sementara waktu biar kita lupakan perbezaan kita dahulu". It sounds so fishy and akin to sweeping all the differences under the carpet for a while. Hidden agenda? So my gamble is still to build and support a stronger and proven MCA so that she can serve effectively. I have to agree with you that some past MCA leaders did not do what they were supposed to do but we must not just cry over spill milk. Now, join hand to help ourselves. There is still hope.
History has told us leaders of MCA is not trusted. The recent incident clearly tell us MCA is rotten party inside. MCA need time to heal, but OTK one-man show cannot do the job. The Brutus Youth & Wanita Chief must be removed immediately for sake of the party. Then MCA has the root to face Chinese Tsunmai Voting. If in next EG, Johor gone to opposition means MCA gone.MCA leaders must prepare to survive like PKR - Wan Aziza , One MP only. May be Pandan is the only hope for MCA.

Everyone has to rethink, reflect and be sincere in choosing politics as a vocation, certain sacrifice is needed for the sake of the survival of the community.
Many don't disagree with with the fact that MCA has not been loyal to the chinese community generally. We must admit that had MCA done as much as claimed like before things are not going out of their way and into the hands of DAP. There is an element of truth here. Theparty does not rise up and show UMNO what they think about the power of MCA and protection of its dignity entrusted by those who helmed it otherwise UMNO would not reign supreme as appears by its behaviur/habit of interfering. Perhaps OTK is different and I believe heis dead set to restore MCA image by upholding the principles of the party constitution. That's fine. The other thng is the rebels who betray the party and constitution must be punished and cannot be allowed to continue in the party and to destroy. If that can be accomplished then may be the Party's image can be restired fully in a sense. This is because the mental image of these socalled rebels has disgusted so many chinese perhaps all to the extent that what they did has sounded a death knell to the party. And now prolonging the situation to allow for fresh election is another hurdle which appears to a wrong step to prolong the crisis - who knows what comes next - seems never ending. ReplyDeleteUMNO, or more specifically, Muhyidin, has done great disservice to MCA, BN and the PM. He will cause MCA, if it were to do like what Muhyidin wanted, lose the respect and also the votes of the Chinese voters. LTL and his gang caused so much damage to MCA and yet Muhyidin listened so much to WKS, his deputy minister, that his arrogant words will make MCA lose face, respect and votes of the Chinese community. When UMNO had internal squabble in the past, would UMNO accept MCA leader telling UMNO likewise? Muhyidin's action can also cause BN lose more at the next GE and Najib will be asked to step down for Muhyidin to take over.

Your reasonings are quite lopsided. Be rational 'cos if you said that DAP could not do much now as she is not part of the Federal Govenment then the same line of thinking should be accorded to the present MCA leadership which have been having lots of troubles created by the lost souls who try to destabilise the party for reasons best known to themselves. We should give OTK and CSL a chance to prove themselves which had eluded them the moment they were elected President and Deputy. If Nelson and de Klerk could put aside differences and work for the country that is no reason why OTK and CSL cannot be given the chance to do so. Do not say that they are of the different leagues.
