RITA SIM
Untangling complexities of

Chinese community

2009/11/16 read the full article here .

MCA has to resolve its internal problems, and soon, before the Chinese community looks elsewhere for more reliable representation, writes RITA SIM

THE MCA appears to be incapable of resolving its internal leadership crisis. Personalities are a powerful factor, but the MCA turmoil also reflects fundamental cleavages in the Malaysian Chinese community.

The MCA leadership conflict should have ended on Oct 10 at the party's extraordinary general meeting when president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat received a no-confidence vote -- he had previously given members his word that he would step down should this eventuate, but then reneged.

Ong has been clearly deprived of a mandate and now rules by fiat, putting the country's six million Chinese in the untenable position of being led by a party with just over 10 per cent (840,489 votes) of the total national vote of 7,944,274.

To make matters more complex, the Registrar of Societies reappointed Ong's sacked deputy Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek, leaving Ong's new deputy, Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, to form a third faction opposing both Ong and Chua.

There is increasing speculation that other alternative channels within the Chinese community may step into the political representation vacuum left by the MCA's inability to perform.

This certainly bodes ill for an MCA that has long been the community's chief political connector. It also bodes ill for the DAP and Gerakan (respectively perceived by the community as a permanent opposition and a regional party respectively), or any other party seeking to expand its political reach by appealing to Chinese sentiment in the country.

Such a development would cut these parties from their moorings, and the MCA, for one, would be rendered not so much ineffective as utterly redundant. What purpose could the party serve if the three most important concerns of the Chinese -- culture, business, and vernacular education -- are addressed through non-political channels?

Here lies another problem: it is a common error to think of the Chinese in Malaysia as an entirely homogeneous mass.

A proposed framework for segmenting the Chinese community is the "G1, G2, and G3" model. The majority can be identified as "G1s". They identify readily with traditional ideas of ethnic Chinese culture, language and expression. This group wholeheartedly supports Chinese media and schools. The existence of Huazong, Dong Zong, and other organisations -- including the MCA -- depends very much on the G1s.

The "G2s" are English-educated Chinese. Predominantly, if not exclusively, middle-class and urban, they identify more with specific civil society issues and are more likely to forge alliances with like-minded individuals or groups (church groups, for example, or Lions or Rotary Clubs) than with any of the traditional Chinese associations.

The "G3s" exist between these two groups in an overlap. G3 Chinese are those who, through language or work, have moved from one group to the other and survived, and perhaps even thrived.

The G2s and G3s are unlikely to associate themselves with any "Chinese" platforms at all, and may move in circles that are markedly multiracial as a factor of class and education. They are unrepresented politically by the MCA, as traditional communal dynamics cannot appeal to them.

MCA, in appealing to the G2s for support, should perhaps bear in mind that its first president, Tun Tan Cheng Lock, was a G2 and rose to prominence at a time when both the Chinese and Malay communities in the country were politically fragmented.

If the Chinese community, in the broadest definition, requires a single political leader as the community's representative in government, perhaps the time has come to look outside traditional power structures to the various Chinese groups and associations, for example, or perhaps even outside the strictly Chinese-speaking community.

Such a move could bring the community as a whole a step closer towards devolving political power to a less communal platform.

Conversely, it could rejuvenate the community's political leadership in spirit that inspired its leaders in the early years of the Alliance -- although any such development would require radical rethinking on the part of the entire community, and especially the MCA.

Rita is also no longer the Deputy Chairman of Insap as she had tendered her resignation to Insap. She was appointed to Insap when Ka Ting was the MCA President and subsequently appointed to a high powered position in Sin Chew Jit Poh.

Ong Ka Ting recommended her to the following :

• Appointed to the board of Sin Chew Media Corporation Berhad in year 2004 as an Executive Director, oversees operational departments such as ICT, Production and HR & Admin departments. In year 2006, her portfolio was extended to covering circulation, logistics and distribution, and marketing departments.

Sits on the Board of Yayasan Sin Chew as a trustee and holds directorship in several private limited companies involved in telecommunications and manufacturing of engineering and industrial products.

  6. Rita Sin is very unprofessional. It is very unethical of a writer.
She is in a dream land. Why can't she just wake up from her slumber and look around to see what is actually happening in MCA? MCA through GUP is healing and moving forward.
Why can't she open her ears and start listening and hear what people have to say?
The majority of the Chinese wants unity and MCA is through GUP is uniting the Chinese to move ahead.
Rita Sim, do you know what is the meaning of MAJORITY AND MINORITY?!!! Do you know what is DEMOCRACY?!!!! Nine to ten CCMs who go against GUP do not represent the majority.
Have you seen the MCA Constitution?!! Do do understand what you read?!!! Then you should advise the lost souls that the 2nd EGM is unconstitutionals as the two resolutions contradict with the constitution.
Rita Sim, you do not have the integrity to write as you have been twisting facts to satisfy yourself ends and those lost souls.
I am most appalled about the UTAR case. Spinning to tell lies to mislead the Chinese community.

TELLING LIES IS THE GREATEST CURSE OF THE HUMAN RACE AS LIES CAUSE SUFFERINGS. THOSE WHO INTENTIONALLY TELL LIES SHALL BEGET SUFFERINGS THROUGH THE RIPENNING OF THE NEGATIVE KARMAS ACCUMULATED.

  12. This Rita gal seems to take pleasure into divide the Chinese into sub-groups.

Her characterization of Chinese into Chinese educated versus that of the English educated is with ill intention at best.

    You know why?

Because by dividing the Chinese into "English Ed" versus that of the "Chinese Ed", she is attempting to weaken the Chinese' unity and thus, enable her and her boss into conquering the Chinese with outside forces (notably with arm no).

Her intention is clearcut --- she wants the Chinese to be divided and fight amongst each others.

Yes, according to Rita, I am of the G3 grouping, but hell, who cares which group I am in, all I know is, I want to see Chinese' interests (whether from G1, G2 or G3) to be protected, and I want an MCA which is strong enough to render the protection for ALL of us.

So, Rita, if you are reading this, please go to hell !

    ReplyDelete
  13. Oh wait !

I am not in the G3 grouping after all !

According to Rita, G3 people don't care anything about Chinese thingy, but I do care !

So where do I put myself? G4?

  14. Rita, you have no right to divide chinese into smaller sub groups, who are you to do so? what are your credentials and credibilities? you are vicious and spiteful and choose to ignore the truths in the MCA and UTAR incidents. Your papers are telling blatant lies over and over again. BTW, have you read the Open Letter written by Lobbo in both justicetootk and ti lian ker's blog? what are your replies? Why is sin chew becoming so judgemental to conclude that OTK is the worse ever MCA President in one of your many slanderous articles?? You and your papers are unethical, soulless and a liability to the chinese future. All I can say is you work for the two tiongs and also the two ongs at the expense of the rest of the chinese whom you sold their souls. BTW, how much do you get with your multiple positions in sin chew also at the expense of hundreds of thousands of workers in Sin chew, nanyang and chinapress whom have to work like dogs to earn a living?? Do you know staffs are virtually crying for help in Nanyang due to neglect by you stupid gaji buta management of sin chew? you bought over nanyang and leave it in the cold to die and in the process many staff inside suffers till now. Don't tell me you do not know but all of you are too busy counting money instead of doing a decent work. You really have a good time as a professional boot licker. Don't let me see you on the street or else I will marah and ludah straight on your face, no face given even in the centre road of jalan alor.

  15. Rita Sim, divide and rule??? You should be banished. We are talking about 1Malaysia and here you with your devilish intention is trying to divide the Chinese into G1, G2 and G3? Its your preception in your nutshell. We have never had such groupings. My friends and I were educated in English right from the primary school till University but such groupings have never crossed our minds.
Rita Sim, do you know what is globalisation? Chinese in Malaysia have always been one big family. May be you are among the minority who differ.

  16. A check at INSAP.org.my the following details are found:

    "Board of Trustees:
    • Chairman, Tan Sri Lau Yin Pin
    • Deputy Chairman, Rita Sim Sai Hoon
    • Board members: Dato’ Ng Poh Tip, Senator Lee Sing Chooi
    • Legal Advisor, Benson Foo"

How many years the "Leaderships" at INSAP did not update the site?

My friend, the late Senator Lee Sing Chooi, had gone to heaven already (he is a Christian), his name still appears therein--as if he is still working for INSAP....

So is RITA SIM's name as Deputy Chairman of INSAP. True or outdated?

We must cane the Director (Mdm) Fui K. Soong already!

LIKEWISE, the party Constitution as published in MCA.org.my --is that the latest?

How come Sdra Justice4OTK said Article 174/175 which was copied from there is outdated?

Will Sdra Lim Ching Hai look into the matter?

  17. Go to hell with Rita, who she think she is ? She think chinese guilds can become the alternative to MCA ? What the hell she talking about ? Try making one of those big tycoon BN a candidate anywhere in the GE13, you will see for yourself how their scandals and dirty linen will be wash out in the public. Their names normally stings for what they have done on the way to accumulate their massive wealth. All these wealth were just made at the expense of small traders.

If they are clean, they cannot be filthy rich. That's for sure, of course they would not admit this. Honest people cannot be rich, only crooks and conman can pile up thier wealth. These chinese towkays are dirty people, they are generall uneducated, snobbish, often boast of their wealth openly, knows nothing about politics, the only language they speak is lu gua lu guam but they have listeners whenever they speak because they have money to treat people, to sponsor activities in the association. If they slightly smarter, they will become natural leaders say at the age of 60 plus. At this age, they only start to learn about how to conduct meetings, how to do public speaking. By doing so, they thought they have found some very treasured strength in their hollow soul. Because thet=y have money other start to shoe-shine, they become big-headed.

Imagine these are the type of tycoon-cum leader that we are supposed to have. How to deal with BN partners. My god, Rita Sim must crazy, these are the rotten rich people. They can be filthy rich but not fit to be leaders. You know why chinese businessman cannot in Malaysia cannot transform into k-economy ? They reason is we have too many uneducated leaders, practically illiterate, they dont understand anything about transformation. All they need to do is just carry on endlessly, make more duplicate copies of the same business models, creating more cut-throat competitions. The small chinese traders will be wiped out one by one slowly, such are the so-called contribution of big tycoons. The more we have them, the more difficult it will be for the small traders.

If ever one day, they command the political power, I believe they will short sell the chinese interests, for they only think of their pockets and pockets of their cronies.

  23. KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 18 — MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat today reshuffled the presidential council which saw the axing of several members aligned to his rival Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.

Among those dropped in the reshuffle were Youth chief Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong, Wanita chief Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun, Datuk Wee Jeck Seng and Wong Nai Chee.

New faces include Datuk Tan Chai Ho, who is aligned to deputy president Datuk Seri Chua Soi Lek.

The president has the discretion to appoint whoever he wishes but Liow described the move as politics of "slash and burn".

"It is a reshuffle, and not fair to say they have been axed," said Ong.
