GEORGE TOWN: The Indonesian maid who was allegedly raped and abused repeatedly by her employers has expressed relief knowing that the couple is now under police custody.

Win Faidaa, 26, who is currently seeking treatment at Penang Hospital, was happy when informed by Consul-General of Indonesia to Penang, Chilman Arisman, that her employers -- a 41-year-old contractor and his 36-year-old wife -- had been detained by police.

"She is very happy to learn that justice has been served. I could sense her enthusiasm during our conversation... she kept asking me details about the arrests," Chilman told the New Straits Times at the hospital where Win is warded.

Win is currently placed in an isolated room and only selected people, including the police and consulate officials, can visit her.

Pressmen have been barred from entering the room.

Chilman said Win was slowly recovering from her trauma and the physical wounds.

He said it was the consulate which had assisted police to identify Win as she does not have any personal documentation with her, including her passport.

"We had to call our headquarters in Jakarta to trace her personal records," he said.

The 26-year-old, who hails from East Java, was found loitering by the roadside in Nibong Tebal on Sunday with blood dripping from her wounds.

Her employers had apparently abandoned her there.

Her breasts were scalded by a hot iron and her entire back was splashed with boiling water.

Win's head was clobbered with a hard object and her limbs whipped with a waist belt. She was also turned into a sex slave.

Win, who claimed that the couple had abused her since May, was rescued by a good Samaritan.

Later in the day, state police chief Datuk Ayub Yaakob also visited Win at the hospital.

Win, who is in high spirits, was seen wiping away tears when Ayub consoled her and advised her to be strong to overcome her trauma.

Speaking later, Ayub said police would expedite their investigations into the case.

"We have recorded statements from a few key individuals. However, we need more information before we can wrap up this case," he said, adding that among others, police needed more details about the background of the couple.

He added that besides abuse and rape, police were also looking into charging the couple for human exploitation.

Ayub said police were also investigating how the couple could employ the maid since one of them had a criminal record, and whether the maid was employed legally.

Meanwhile, Ayub said the doctor attending to Win confirmed that she was only suffering from external injuries.
